What makes the AYN Thor a DS-style handheld?

That makes “Nintendo DS alternative” a description of form factor and intended use, not an assertion that the Thor is an official Nintendo product or reproduces original hardware in every respect. AYN’s indexed product listing describes an Android handheld, not a Nintendo device.
Can the AYN Thor play DS and 3DS games?
The hardware supplies two screens and touch input, but those features alone do not establish emulator support or compatibility with any particular title. You will need to choose an emulator, configure how it presents the two screens, set up touch and physical controls, and check how each game behaves. The available evidence does not establish an exhaustive DS or 3DS compatibility list, nor does it support claims about specific frame rates or tested performance.

Android offers flexibility, but it does not guarantee the same software experience, library, or feel as original Nintendo hardware. AYN also states that games are not preinstalled, so do not expect an included game library.

Price, preorder status and delivered cost
Prices and availability are snapshots, not permanent quotes. AYN’s store collections page showed the Thor from $259, while the indexed Max 16GB/1TB selection showed $579. Those figures refer to different configurations and should not be treated as a like-for-like price comparison or a guarantee of current pricing. The official product page has been indexed with “Batch 7 Pre-order” language; check the live listing and selected configuration before ordering.
AYN’s shipping policy says listed prices exclude shipping and taxes, and delivery time varies by method and destination. Its shipping dashboard records batch processing, including Thor entries through September 2026 in the indexed page. A batch entry is not an individual delivery estimate. What to weigh before choosing it over original hardware
- Two screens and touch: The simultaneous stacked displays and touch-enabled lower screen are the clearest reasons to consider the Thor for DS-style use.
- Setup: Emulator choice, screen mapping, touch configuration and game-specific behavior affect the experience; the dual-screen design does not remove that work.
- Comfort and portability: Independent coverage treats comfort and pocketability as trade-offs of a dual-screen handheld. Consider how its clamshell form suits your use; the available evidence does not provide a measured comparison.
- Original-hardware experience: The Thor runs Android and offers flexibility, but that is different from establishing an identical Nintendo library, software environment or feel.

Verdict
The AYN Thor is a strong fit for someone who specifically wants a modern clamshell handheld with two built-in touchscreens for DS-style gaming. Its layout answers the physical-screen problem better than a conventional single-screen handheld, but the experience still depends on emulator setup and individual game compatibility. If you want plug-and-play Nintendo hardware or an included game collection, the Thor is not that.
