The fan project aimed to recreate the 2009 Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer experience inside the 2017 PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. The team said it would comply and shut down operations permanently.
What was H2M?
H2M, also called the H2 Multiplayer Mod, was a fan-made PC project intended to bring the multiplayer experience of 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. It was not an official remaster or a standalone game. The project required the PC version of Modern Warfare Remastered; the cancellation means buying that game does not provide access to H2M.

The name can be confusing: H2M sought to recreate multiplayer from the 2009 game, not the separate Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II released in 2022. Activision said the 2022 game launched worldwide on October 28, 2022, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Battle.net and Steam (Activision’s 2022 launch announcement).
When was H2M canceled?
The team had scheduled H2M’s public release for August 16, 2024. On August 15, it announced that team members had received a cease-and-desist order on behalf of Activision Publishing and that it was shutting down all operations immediately and permanently. The announcement came one day before the planned launch, as reported by GameSpot.

“Today, our team members received a Cease & Desist order on behalf of Activision Publishing in relation to the H2M-Mod project. We are complying with this order and shutting down all operations immediately and permanently.”
Why did Activision send a cease and desist?
Activision’s confirmed action, as described in the team’s announcement, was the cease-and-desist order. The available reporting does not establish an official explanation from Activision for why it sent it.

- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II - Xbox One/ Xbox Series X
In an August 19, 2024, GameSpot follow-up, an H2M team member using the handle Watchful Wolf said the order cited the mod’s popularity and its proximity to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, with concern that H2M could interfere with possible sales. GameSpot said the account was difficult to verify and that it had contacted Activision for comment. That explanation should therefore be understood as the team member’s account, not a confirmed statement of Activision’s motive.
What was H2M supposed to include?
Before the cancellation, VGC reported that the developers planned to combine maps from Modern Warfare Remastered with maps brought forward from the original Modern Warfare 2. The announced plans also included more than 50 maps, an updated progression system, and additional attachments and camos (VGC’s report).

GameSpot reported that Modern Warfare Remastered sales on Steam rose significantly ahead of H2M’s planned release. The same report noted that the game regularly went on sale, and that speculation about a sale being arranged to capitalize on interest in the mod was not established. GameSpot also reported review-bombing after the shutdown announcement. These are reported sales and review trends, not proof of Activision’s reason for issuing the order.
