Luck modifies selected chances—such as some room-clear drops and certain item effects—while other random outcomes and item bonuses work independently of the stat.
How much of The Binding of Isaac is based on luck?
There are two meanings of “luck” here. Runs in The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth involve randomly generated floors and changing item opportunities, so chance is a major part of what a run offers. The Luck stat is narrower: it affects only specific calculations documented for particular mechanics. A high Luck value does not guarantee good items, favorable rooms, or a successful run.
The broad procedural-generation context is described in the Rebirth overview. The detailed Luck mechanics below come from the community-maintained Rebirth Luck reference; exact behavior may differ by game edition or DLC.
What the Luck stat affects
Room-clear drops
In Rebirth, the Luck reference describes room-drop calculations as affected by Luck, with the stat’s contribution capped between 0 and 10. Higher Luck can improve the chance of receiving drops and of receiving higher-quality drops, such as chests. This changes odds rather than guaranteeing a drop or a particular reward.

Some item-specific tear effects
For certain items, Luck increases the chance that a tear triggers the item’s special effect. There is no single scaling formula: the reference describes some chances as scaling exponentially, others linearly, and some as having a maximum below 100%.
| Item | Luck-related effect in the Rebirth reference |
|---|---|
| Apple! | Razor-tear effect reaches 100% at 14 Luck. |
| Ball of Tar | Slow effect reaches 100% at 18 Luck. |
| Bird’s Eye | Fire effect is 50% at 10 Luck. |
These are item-specific values reported by the community-maintained Luck reference, not a general rule for all items or versions. Check the mechanics for the edition and DLC you play before relying on a threshold.

What the Luck stat does not mean
Luck is not a universal modifier for every random event. For example, the Lucky Foot entry says its room-clear drop bonus works independently of the Luck stat. An effect can improve a chance without increasing the stat itself, so it is worth checking whether a particular item or mechanic uses Luck or grants a separate bonus.

How to think about Luck during a run
- Expect random floors and item opportunities; the Luck stat does not determine the whole run.
- Use Luck as a modifier for mechanics that specifically scale with it, including documented room-drop calculations and some tear effects.
- For an item with a chance-based effect, check its own scaling and cap rather than assuming more Luck always means a guaranteed effect.
- Distinguish a Luck stat increase from an item that independently improves a chance.
