Is the Borderlands MMO Revival Safe to Download? How to Check Fan-Made Game Files

There is no verified safety verdict for the current Borderlands Online revival download. GamesRadar+ reported on October 5, 2026, that the fan project had entered playtesting and was playable in English, but that does not authenticate or assess any particular file. Before running a build, verify where it came from, check its release details and signature, and scan it with current security software. If you cannot establish its provenance, do not run it.

What is known about the revival—and what is not

The revival is a fan effort to bring back the canceled, China-market Borderlands Online using a recovered game build and community help, according to earlier reporting by PC Gamer. More recently, GamesRadar+ reported that playtesting had begun and that fans could join. Neither report establishes that a particular installer is genuine or safe.

The available information does not establish a canonical current download page, a release-specific checksum, a verified publisher certificate identity, or an independent security analysis tied to a specific file hash. That means the evidence supports neither calling the current download safe nor calling it malicious. Project activity and popularity are not substitutes for checking the files themselves.

How to check a fan-made game download

1. Establish the source before downloading

Find a project page or account whose identity you can verify independently, then follow its release link. A familiar file-hosting service, Discord post, or video description alone does not prove that a file came from the project. Because a canonical download location for the current revival build has not been established, do not assume a search result or repost is official.

2. Match the release details

Compare the downloaded filename and version with the project’s own release notes. If maintainers publish a cryptographic hash, calculate the downloaded file’s hash locally and compare it character for character with the value on the independently verified project page. No release-specific hash for the current build has been established here, so there is no verified value to compare against.

3. Check the executable’s signature

In Windows, inspect the executable’s digital-signature details, or use Microsoft SignTool. Microsoft’s example for Authenticode verification is SignTool verify /pa MyControl.exe. A valid signature can show that a signed file has not changed since signing and identify its signer. You still need to decide whether that signer is trustworthy and matches one the project identifies; a valid signature alone is not an endorsement of the file.

4. Assess warnings rather than dismissing them

Microsoft says a SmartScreen “not commonly downloaded” warning reflects a file’s reputation and is not, by itself, a conclusive malware finding. Consider where you obtained the file and whether it is signed. Do not bypass a warning just to launch the game. Microsoft’s SmartScreen FAQ explains how to interpret these warnings.

5. Scan the download before opening it

Update Microsoft Defender or another reputable antivirus product, then scan the downloaded archive and any extracted executables. Microsoft recommends using trusted download sources and current security protection in its guide to protecting your PC from unwanted software. A clean scan is one useful check, not proof that the file is safe or that it came from the genuine project.

6. Stop if important details do not line up

Do not run the files if you cannot independently identify the project source, the filename or version conflicts with its release notes, the signer is unexpected, or security software detects a threat. Seek clarification from the project maintainers or the security vendor before proceeding.

What Epic Games Launcher verification can—and cannot—do

Epic Games Launcher’s file verification checks and repairs files for games in its library. It is not a way to authenticate an unrelated fan-made installer. Use it for a supported game in your library, not as evidence that a Borderlands Online revival download is genuine. See Epic’s instructions for verifying game files.
