If you want to start solving right away, try a quick crossword: its clues usually point directly to definitions or synonyms, with little to learn first. If decoding clues sounds more fun than filling a grid quickly, begin with a beginner-friendly cryptic such as the Guardian’s Quick Cryptic or Quiptic. You do not have to start with a full-difficulty cryptic.
What is the difference between quick and cryptic crosswords?
Quick crosswords use direct clues
A quick crossword clue generally gives a definition or a synonymous word or phrase. You can attempt one without learning a special set of clue conventions first; CZD Crosswords’ advice for beginners describes quick crosswords as puzzles that do not require special knowledge or skills.
Cryptics combine a definition and wordplay
A cryptic clue asks you to find an answer through both a definition and wordplay. Common devices include anagrams, charades, containers, reversals, homophones, double definitions and hidden words. Indicator words may signal which operation to try. The definition and wordplay should lead to the same answer, giving you two ways to check it. Wiley’s introductory chapter on cryptic crosswords explains these clue components.
Which should a beginner try first?
Choose a quick crossword if you want a low learning curve
Start with a quick puzzle if you want to make a first attempt without stopping to learn clue devices. Direct clues make the format more approachable, though individual puzzles still vary: a quick clue can depend on unfamiliar vocabulary or a reference you do not know.

Choose a beginner cryptic if the wordplay appeals to you
If the puzzle of decoding a clue is what attracts you, start with a gentler cryptic rather than ruling out the format. The Guardian recommends its smaller Quick Cryptic for absolute beginners; its setters identify the tricks in use. It also points beginners to Quiptic, Everyman and Monday cryptics as gentler options. Puzzle size, familiar clue devices, explanations and crossing letters can all make a cryptic more accessible.
How to get started with a cryptic
- Look for a definition. It is often at one end of the clue. Treat this as a starting point rather than a fixed rule.
- Check the other words for an instruction. An indicator may suggest an operation such as rearranging letters or reversing them.
- Test both routes. The wordplay and definition should converge on the same answer.
- Use crossing letters. Answers in intersecting clues narrow the possibilities and reduce the amount you have to work out at once.
- Get help when useful. A dictionary, a solver’s blog, or another person can help you learn. Guardian crossword writer Alan Connor recommends solving with a friend or family member, in person or over a messaging thread. Its beginner’s guide to solving cryptic crosswords also treats aids and collaboration as part of learning, not as cheating.
How to choose between them
| What matters to you | Quick crossword | Beginner cryptic |
|---|---|---|
| How clues work | Usually direct definitions or synonyms | Definition plus wordplay to decode |
| What you need to learn first | Little instruction is needed to make a first attempt | Learn clue devices and indicators gradually |
| Best fit if you enjoy | Recognizing words and definitions | Working out how clues manipulate words |
| Useful support | Crossing letters and a dictionary | Crossing letters, explanations or hints, a solver’s blog, or a solving partner |
These are tendencies, not guarantees of difficulty. A puzzle’s setter and publication matter: unfamiliar vocabulary can make a quick crossword challenging, while a cryptic with explanations and familiar devices can offer a more manageable start. There is no representative comparison here of beginner completion times, success rates or preferences, so the choice is best made by the kind of solving you want to do.

Do you need a book or special equipment?
No. Free beginner guidance and puzzle archives are enough to begin. A beginner cryptic crossword book can be a useful companion if you prefer structured instruction and exercises, but it is not a prerequisite; publisher materials such as Wiley’s introductory chapter explain definitions, wordplay and indicators.
