The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered can still be a rewarding first RPG adventure if you enjoy exploring a large fantasy world, choosing your own quests and build, and stumbling into odd moments along the way. It is a harder recommendation if you expect modern action combat, tightly paced storytelling or consistently polished performance. For most newcomers, the 2025 remaster is the sensible starting point: it updates several systems and includes the major expansions, but it does not remake the game’s underlying design.
What makes it fun—and what may not click
Oblivion is a single-player open-world RPG set in Cyrodiil, where you are drawn into a fight against a Daedric invasion. You can pursue the main story, follow side quests, roam the countryside or shape a character around a preferred style. Bethesda’s beginner guide describes the freedom to make different choices and follow different paths; its Senior Environment Artist Megan Sawyer summed up the developer’s perspective this way: “You’ll have a great time, no matter how you play.” That is an invitation to experiment, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy the game. Bethesda’s beginner guide and the Steam store page describe its setting and character possibilities.
The clearest first-time-player account is mixed. Ars Technica Senior Gaming Editor Kyle Orland, who played the remaster without experience with the earlier Bethesda RPGs, praised the atmosphere of travelling through the world and the social texture of towns: NPC voices, rumors and hints of side stories made places feel inhabited. But he found the opening’s chosen-one premise abrupt, some wilderness rewards thin and early combat dull. Bugs also forced him to reload. Orland’s experience is one reviewer’s account rather than a measure of how newcomers as a whole will respond. Read his Ars Technica account, published April 26, 2025.
It is a better fit if you value
- Roaming and discovering places at your own pace.
- Choosing among quests and character approaches instead of following one prescribed route.
- A fantasy world whose appeal comes partly from atmosphere, conversations and unpredictable encounters.
It is a weaker fit if you prioritize
- Fast, precise combat that feels like a recent action RPG.
- A gradual, finely paced introduction to the story.
- Technical polish without bugs or performance hiccups.
Orland found the combat archaic beside modern action RPGs, even while appreciating the world’s atmosphere and NPC interactions. That contrast is more useful than a simple claim that the game is either timeless or obsolete: its appeal is strongest in exploration and freedom, not in matching contemporary action design.

Why the 2025 remaster is the usual starting point
Oblivion Remastered retains the original game’s core while bringing a new Unreal Engine 5 visual treatment and revisions to the interface, map, cameras, autosaves, accessibility, leveling, encumbrance and enemy scaling. It also includes Knights of the Nine, Shivering Isles and additional downloadable content. These changes reduce some old friction, but they do not turn the game into a newly designed RPG. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement details the remaster, while Steam’s listing identifies included expansions and DLC.
For a first playthrough, the remaster is the practical default because it combines those updates and included content in one edition. The original release remains a valid choice if you specifically want to experience the 2006 version, but the available information does not establish how its current compatibility, cost or modding requirements compare.
Choose a combat setting that suits you
If combat is the main barrier, the remaster offers a way to adjust it rather than simply accepting one fixed balance. Bethesda’s Update 1.2, dated July 16, 2025, added separate player and enemy combat-damage options with six named settings: Novice, Apprentice, Adept, Journeyman, Expert and Master. Bethesda describes Journeyman as a bridge between Adept and Expert. You can use the options to tune how punishing fights feel; the settings do not change the game’s underlying combat design. See Bethesda’s Update 1.2 notes.
Where and when you can play
Bethesda announced the remaster for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC in April 2025. Xbox Wire reported Game Pass availability at launch and Xbox Play Anywhere support. Bethesda later announced a Nintendo Switch 2 release for August 11, 2026. Those dates establish platform releases, not current subscription terms or retail availability; check the relevant store for what is available where you live. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement and Bethesda’s Switch 2 announcement provide the release details.

- Start with your priorities. If exploration, quest choice and an expansive fantasy setting sound more appealing than slick combat, the remaster is a reasonable first RPG to try.
- Set expectations for the design. Expect an older-style opening and combat feel, even with updated presentation and quality-of-life changes.
- Adjust combat if needed. Try a different player or enemy damage setting among the six options added in Update 1.2 if fights are too easy or too punishing.
- Check the edition and access terms. Choose the remaster for the updated systems and included expansions; verify current store or subscription details for your platform before buying or subscribing.
A Tom’s Guide retrospective offers a useful but different perspective: its author had played the original as a child, welcomed the visual update and changes to leveling and enemy scaling, but still found lockpicking difficult and reported jank, frame-rate hitches and delayed texture loading on PS5 Pro. That nostalgic perspective and hardware-specific experience are not a direct forecast of performance on every system. Read the Tom’s Guide retrospective.
