No official announcement in the available sources says that The Elder Scrolls is switching video-game genres in Shadows of Oblivion. That name refers to a tabletop expansion, not a newly announced Elder Scrolls video game. It is described as adding Daedric-prince content with blessings and curses that can change the challenge.
What is Shadows of Oblivion?
Shadows of Oblivion is described in a Chip Theory Games campaign update and a retailer listing as a tabletop expansion. The campaign identifies the project as The Elder Scrolls: Heroes of Tamriel; the retailer lists the product as The Elder Scrolls: BoTSE: Shadows of Oblivion, associated with Betrayal of the Second Era. The names differ between the listings, but both identify a tabletop product rather than a video-game release. The campaign update and the retailer listing describe the expansion.
How does the expansion change play?
The campaign update describes content for five Daedric princes. Each is associated with a side-quest-like choice involving a blessing and a curse. Players are encouraged to take both; those who want to adjust the difficulty can choose one or the other. This is a tabletop challenge-customization mechanic, not evidence of a new genre or mode in an Elder Scrolls video game.
What does the official ESO update history show?
The Elder Scrolls Online has an official record of continuing game updates and named story arcs. Its Game Updates page includes Updates 30, 31 and 32—Blackwood, Waking Flame and Deadlands—as parts of the Gates of Oblivion saga, alongside later updates. The page does not identify a video game called Shadows of Oblivion or announce a genre switch.
