But it is unreleased, and hands-on previews have disagreed about how well those ingredients come together. You do not appear to need prior knowledge of The Expanse to understand its mercenary-and-crew premise; whether the finished game delivers on its promise remains unknown.
What is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn?
Developed and published by Owlcat Games, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a single-player, third-person action RPG set in the universe of The Expanse, the book and television franchise. Steam’s game listing describes a player-created Pinkwater Security mercenary captain whose shore leave on Eros becomes a lockdown and leads into a wider conspiracy.

You can shape your captain’s background as an Earther, Martian or Belter, then lead a crew through the story. The premise supplies a clear starting point even if you have never encountered the franchise: a security contractor, a crisis on Eros and a crew caught up in events beyond a routine assignment.
Why people compare it to Mass Effect
The comparison is about recognizable design elements, not proof that the games share a level of writing or quality. In its Steam feature description, Owlcat highlights cover-focused gunplay, combat abilities, two companions alongside the player in the field, and support from other crew members. Xbox Wire’s overview adds real-time crew commands, companion Exploits used in combat and mission decisions with consequences.

- Role-playing: The game promises choices that affect relationships and events, though the depth of the full arc is not yet established.
- Crew focus: The captain-and-crew setup recalls a familiar kind of narrative RPG, but the final characterization and presentation still have to prove themselves.
Those systems make “Mass Effect-style RPG” a useful shorthand for what Osiris Reborn is aiming at. They do not guarantee a Mass Effect successor, nor do they establish how satisfying the finished story will be.
What have preview players said?
The available hands-on impressions are mixed, and both concern previews of an in-development game rather than reviews of the finished release.
PC Gamer’s April 2026 preview
Robin Valentine’s PC Gamer hands-on preview found the core combat solid but not especially inspiring, and noted that the mission shown offered limited role-playing context. Valentine called the game promising while cautioning that it was too early to declare it the second coming of Mass Effect.
TechRadar’s October 2026 demo
Tom Regan’s TechRadar hands-on preview, published October 3, 2026, was substantially less impressed after a 90-minute demo. It described the experience as underwhelming and questioned whether the writing, cinematic presentation and action could meet the standard set by Mass Effect.
These assessments do not settle the game’s eventual quality. Together, they point to the right questions for a prospective player: how the combat feels over a full game, whether choices have meaningful consequences, and whether the crew and story are compelling beyond the premise.
Can you play it without knowing The Expanse?
The official descriptions introduce the game through its own captain, crew and Eros crisis; none of the reviewed sources says that reading the books or watching the show is required. The game is set in the shared franchise universe, but the available information does not establish a formal continuity guarantee or specify exactly how much background knowledge its story assumes.
Rank #2
If you are curious about the setting, Leviathan Wakes is an optional way to explore the source universe—not homework established as necessary to play. The game’s own mercenary-and-crew setup is enough to explain its basic premise.

What about the closed beta?
Owlcat announced a closed beta for April 22, 2026, for eligible Founders who purchased the Miller’s Pack or Collector’s Edition through the official site. The announcement said it would include a full mission and be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5. The announcements cited here do not establish whether those packs or beta access remain available as of October 7, 2026, so check Owlcat’s current terms before relying on access being offered.
Should you be interested?
If you want a third-person RPG built around a captain, a squad and consequential choices, Osiris Reborn has a credible pitch—and its premise is understandable without franchise homework. The Mass Effect comparison is most useful as a description of its announced mechanics. It should not be treated as a promise about the final game’s writing, pacing or overall quality, particularly given the difference between the April and October 2026 preview reactions.
