It is free, optional Steam DLC, and you can disable it in the game launcher to return to the original textures. If disk space or hardware headroom is limited, skipping it is sensible: official sources do not establish a specific frame-rate cost or guarantee a visible improvement on your particular PC.
What the pack adds—and what it costs
Bethesda describes the optional PC pack as an upgrade to Fallout 4’s textures. The announcement says, “If your system can handle it, the Commonwealth will look better than ever,” but the official materials do not include controlled comparison images or independent image-quality testing. The visual difference on your setup therefore is not quantified.

The pack is free DLC on Steam, requires Fallout 4 on Steam, and has a listed release date of February 6, 2017. Steam lists 58 GB of disk space, while Bethesda’s January 30, 2017 announcement says to have an additional 58 GB available. Plan for that space beyond the base game; Bethesda Support lists 30 GB of free disk space for the base game, though the support page does not state when that figure was published. What PC does Bethesda recommend?
Bethesda’s 2017 announcement recommends a GTX 1080 with 8 GB of VRAM, an Intel Core i7-5820K or better, and at least 8 GB of RAM for the texture pack. These are the publisher’s recommendations, not a measured cutoff proving that every lower-spec PC will fail or that every system meeting them will perform identically. Bethesda’s pack announcement
Recommended Free Tools
#1 Best Overall
- Freedom and Liberty Do whatever you want in a massive open world with hundreds of locations, characters, and quests. Join multiple factions vying for power or go it alone, the choices are all yours
- Be whoever you want with the special character system. From a power Armored soldier to the charismatic smooth talker, you can choose from hundreds of perks and develop your own playstyle
- New next generation graphics and lighting engine brings to life the world of fallout. From the blasted forests of the common wealth to the ruins of Boston, every location is packed with dynamic detail
- Intense first or third person combat can also be slowed down with the new dynamic Vault Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S) that lets you choose your attacks and enjoy cinematic carnage
For context, Bethesda Support lists a GTX 780 with 3 GB or Radeon R9 290X with 4 GB as recommended graphics hardware for the base game. That difference shows the pack has a substantially higher stated recommendation than the base game; it does not establish how many frames per second the pack costs. Bethesda Support
Should you install it?
| Your situation | Practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You have at least 58 GB of spare space, meet or exceed the pack’s recommended specs, and want higher-resolution textures. | Install and try it. | It is free and optional, and Bethesda provides a way to switch back to original textures. |
| Your storage is tight or your PC is below Bethesda’s recommendation. | Skip it for now. | The large space requirement is clear, while official sources do not quantify a performance impact or establish a lower-spec experience. |
| You are unsure whether the visual change is worth the space. | Decide based on available storage and your interest in textures; treat installation as reversible. | Bethesda does not provide a controlled visual comparison that can predict the result on your PC. |
How to turn it off
Bethesda says the pack can be disabled in the game launcher, restoring the original textures. The announcement does not provide a more detailed menu path, so the exact label or screen may vary. Bethesda announcement

What the official sources do not tell you
- They do not provide a controlled FPS benchmark or a quantified performance penalty for the pack.
- They do not specify its VRAM use in a way that predicts performance on a particular graphics card.
- They do not establish compatibility with mods or behavior across specific current game builds.
For that reason, there is no evidence-based case to upgrade a GPU solely for this free DLC. Treat Bethesda’s hardware list as a recommendation, not a promise of a particular frame rate or a universal pass/fail threshold.
