That makes the patched R-36 more capable against armor than its previous rating suggests, not a confirmed universal answer to tanks.
What changed in the Eruptor patches?
The Eruptor’s armor-related changes arrived in two major steps. Arrowhead’s Patch 01.002.200, dated 18 March 2025, raised the projectile’s armor penetration from Medium (3) to Heavy (4) and extended its projectile lifetime from 0.7 to 1 second. That is the clearest reason the weapon may now be more useful against armored enemies.

In Patch 01.003.000, dated 13 May 2025, Arrowhead changed the shrapnel behavior and handling. The patch said shrapnel would spawn in a full 360-degree spread and be less effective at poor impact angles. It also reduced spread from 10 to 5, improved ergonomics from -14 to 25, reduced sway from 1 to 0.8, and raised listed fire rate from 25 to 32. The patch fixed animation cancellation that had effectively increased firing rate; the weapon adjustments were intended to compensate for removing that exploit.
Those May changes should not be read as a simple increase to every kind of damage. The projectile’s Heavy rating and the shrapnel’s angle-dependent effectiveness are distinct parts of the weapon’s behavior.

Heavy penetration is not Anti-tank
Arrowhead’s Patch 01.001.104 armor-category key labels penetration 4 as Heavy and penetration 5 or higher as Anti-tank. Because the March 2025 patch raised the Eruptor projectile to Heavy (4), it did not move the projectile into the published Anti-tank category.
That distinction matters when deciding whether to rely on the Eruptor as your answer to a tank. The patch figures establish a penetration class; they do not establish a guaranteed number of shots, a kill on every tank variant, or reliable damage from every impact point.

Why hit location and impact angle matter
Tanks are not simply a single armor value. Arrowhead’s tank notes explain that rear weak spots have their own health pool and deal 150% damage to the tank’s main health when damaged. The notes describe why attacking a weak spot can matter, but do not provide an Eruptor-specific shot count.
The Eruptor’s shrapnel adds another qualification: according to the May patch, its effectiveness is reduced at poor impact angles. The weapon’s projectile penetration rating alone therefore cannot tell you what a particular hit will do. Target, hit surface, and angle all affect how useful a shot may be.

What “tank killer” means for a loadout
Think of the patched Eruptor as a primary weapon with improved potential against some armor, rather than as a proven dedicated anti-tank weapon. Its Heavy-penetrating projectile can expand your options, while the published category boundary and the angle-sensitive shrapnel are reasons not to assume it will replace a dependable anti-tank answer in every encounter.
- Consider it when: you want a primary weapon that may contribute against armored enemies as well as other targets.
- Do not assume: Heavy (4) means Anti-tank (5+) or that a direct shot guarantees a tank kill.
- When facing a tank: pay attention to its weak spot and the angle of impact rather than judging a shot by penetration rating alone.
Arrowhead previously explained, in its Patch 1.000.400 rationale reproduced by PC Gamer’s patch explainer, that restoring shrapnel addressed capability lost when shrapnel was removed and that the update added 150 explosion damage with the goal of helping against medium armor and groups. That is historical design context, not a current guarantee of tank damage.
How current is this assessment?
The figures above are dated balance values from Arrowhead’s March 2025 Steam notes and May 2025 Steam Community notes, the latter cited through a SteamDB mirror. The available official information establishes the Eruptor’s Heavy projectile rating and the listed changes, but does not provide a comprehensive current damage table for every tank variant, hit location, and later game version. Treat “tank killer” as a qualified description, not a promise of a repeatable kill.
