What does the TV series rating mean?
HBO Max’s US rating guidance defines TV-MA this way: “This show is specifically designed to be viewed by adults and therefore may be unsuitable for children under 17.” HBO says ratings may be assigned by the service or local rating organizations, and can vary by country. Does every episode have the same rating?
Not necessarily. HBO says a series details page displays the highest maturity rating of any episode in that series. That means the series-level TV-MA label does not establish that every episode has identical content. What if your child means the video game?
The game is a separate product with a separate rating system. The ESRB rates The Last of Us Part I for PS5 M for Mature 17+, with descriptors for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, and Use of Alcohol. ESRB explains that M-rated games are generally suitable for ages 17 and up and may include intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language. For the game specifically, the ESRB summary describes combat with firearms and melee weapons, stealth kills, blood effects, and some dismemberment. It also notes strong language, sexual remarks, and a scene in which a young character may drink alcohol. Those details apply to the game and should not be assumed to describe the TV adaptation. How to make a parent decision
- Identify the version. Decide whether the child is asking about the HBO series or the PS5 game; their ratings and content information come from different systems.
- Check the current local rating. Ratings may differ by country. For the series, open the title details and the specific episode’s advisory on the service your family uses.
- Consider the child, not just the number. Think about their response to intense violence, frightening material, strong language, and adult themes.
- Seek more detail if a particular trigger matters. HBO’s official rating guidance does not provide a complete episode-by-episode inventory of those content categories. Consult a detailed parent guide or preview the relevant episode if the available advisory does not answer your concern.
What the rating does—and does not—tell you
A TV-MA or M 17+ rating is a useful warning that a title is intended for adults or older audiences; it is not a guarantee that every child will react the same way, nor does it describe every scene. The US series listing and the game’s ESRB rating should not be treated as interchangeable: one is a television rating and the other is a US video-game rating.
