Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Worth Buying at $499.99? Five Things to Consider

The Switch 2 launched at $449.99 in the U.S. but now has a $499.99 MSRP. Here are five factors that can help you decide whether to buy, upgrade, or wait.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in the U.S. at $449.99 in 2025, which is the price behind the familiar “$450” question. That is no longer Nintendo’s U.S. list price: the company set the MSRP at $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. Whether it is worth buying depends less on the old headline price than on the games you want, how you play, and what you would give up by choosing it over a Switch OLED.

1. What price are you actually paying?

Nintendo of America listed the Switch 2 at a U.S. launch MSRP of $449.99 on April 18, 2025. Nintendo later announced a revised U.S. MSRP of $499.99, effective September 1, 2026. The latter is the current manufacturer price context; retailer discounts, bundles, and prices outside the U.S. may differ. Check a current local listing before buying.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa described the company’s hardware-pricing approach as considering manufacturing cost alongside consumers’ price perceptions, exchange-rate differences, and regional market conditions. That explains Nintendo’s stated method, not whether the console is good value for your budget.

Nintendo of America’s April 2025 U.S. launch pricing notice and Nintendo’s May 2026 price-revision announcement establish those two figures.

  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

2. Do you want the Switch 2 games?

The clearest reason to buy is that you want to play games made for Switch 2. Nintendo says its added processing capability was intended to let developers create new gameplay experiences, and identified Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza as games it believed could not have been realized on the original Switch. That is Nintendo’s position about its hardware and games, rather than an independent performance test.

Game costs belong in the decision too. Nintendo’s April 2025 U.S. launch notice listed Mario Kart World at $79.99 and Donkey Kong Bananza at $69.99. Those are historical launch MSRPs, not confirmed current prices; check the price of the specific game you plan to buy. A console that looks manageable on its own can become a much larger purchase once you add the games you actually want.

If no Switch 2 game is compelling to you yet, waiting keeps your money available and gives you time to see whether the library grows in directions you care about. If a particular game is a must-play, its value to you—not a generic list of features—is the strongest argument for upgrading.

3. How much do you play handheld?

Nintendo’s battery estimate, as reported in Nintendo Life’s May 2026 comparison, is approximately 2–6.5 hours for Switch 2, versus 4.5–9 hours for Switch OLED. These are ranges, not guarantees: game choice and use affect real battery life. The difference matters most if you regularly play away from an outlet for long stretches; it matters less if you mostly play docked or near a charger.

  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

Switch 2’s larger display and stronger hardware do not erase that portability trade-off. If your usual handheld session involves a commute, a flight, or a long stretch without access to power, give the shorter stated range serious weight rather than assuming the newer system is automatically the better portable choice.

Nintendo Life’s May 2026 model comparison reports the battery ranges. PCWorld’s June 2025 review also identified weaker battery life as a drawback in its assessment.

4. Which screen and performance matter more to you?

Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD with a 1080p handheld display, along with hardware intended to deliver higher resolution and stronger performance than the original Switch generation. Nintendo Life’s May 2026 comparison lists 256GB of internal storage. That is more built-in storage than earlier Switch models, but the screen is LCD—not OLED.

Switch OLED remains the more relevant alternative if your top priorities are an OLED panel’s contrast and longer stated battery range, and you do not need Switch 2-only games. Switch 2 is the stronger fit if you value the newer games, larger high-resolution handheld screen, and performance improvements more than OLED image characteristics or the battery advantage.

5. Are you upgrading from Switch 1 or buying your first Nintendo system?

For an existing Switch owner, the value calculation includes the games already in your library. Nintendo Life’s May 2026 guide reports broad compatibility with Switch 1 games and gives a 99.9% figure in its table. That is the guide’s reported figure, not a guarantee for every title. Confirm compatibility for any particular game before buying.

For a first-time Nintendo buyer, backward compatibility may be less important than the cost of assembling a library. Compare the console price with the current prices of the games you want, and weigh that full starting cost against the play time and types of games you expect to get from the system.

Storage can also matter as your collection grows. PCWorld reports that Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card for memory-card expansion; an ordinary microSD card should not be treated as compatible expansion. If you expect to add storage, verify that a card is explicitly microSD Express before purchasing.

How to decide

  • Buy Switch 2 if you want its games, value the performance and screen improvements, and are comfortable with the current console price plus the games you plan to purchase.
  • Keep or choose Switch OLED if OLED display quality and longer stated handheld battery life matter more to you than access to Switch 2-only games.
  • Wait if the games you want are not clear yet, the total cost is a stretch, or you mostly want a better portable experience and have not decided whether the screen and performance changes outweigh battery life.

For a first-hand perspective, PCWorld’s June 2025 Switch 2 review discusses its observed performance and drawbacks. Nintendo’s May 2025 financial-results briefing contains Furukawa’s pricing explanation and Nintendo’s statements about the games and hardware capabilities.
