The Outlast Trials is worth considering solo if you enjoy stealth horror, objective-based runs, and learning through repeated attempts. Red Barrels explicitly supports facing its experiments alone and says it adjusted difficulty, Trial structure, and progression for solo players as well as groups. But solo does not mean an offline, linear Outlast campaign: PlayStation lists online play as required, and the game is built around repeatable Trials and progression.
Can you play The Outlast Trials alone?
Yes. Red Barrels describes the game as something players can “dare to face the experiments alone,” and its March 2024 launch notes say it made adjustments to difficulty, Trial structure, and progression for people “playing solo or as a group.” Solo play is an intended option, not an unsupported workaround.

That does not make it an offline single-player game. PlayStation’s product listing says online play is required. Solo means tackling the Trials without a party, not disconnecting from the game’s online environment.
What solo play feels like
The meaningful distinction is between a solo run through repeatable objectives and a traditional authored campaign. The Outlast Trials asks players to enter Trials, pursue objectives, survive threats, and progress through its structure. If you want a linear story you can complete offline at your own pace, that format may not be what you are looking for.

- Likely a fit: You enjoy stealth, survival horror, objective-focused runs, and improving after failed or difficult attempts.
- Potential mismatch: You mainly want a self-contained, offline, linear campaign with a conventional single-player structure.
- Difficulty consideration: Playing alone still involves danger and pressure. Developer-documented solo adjustments are accommodations, not a promise that every Trial will feel easy.
This is a fit assessment based on the game’s official structure, not a report of hands-on testing or a claim about how most players experience solo runs.
Where should a solo newcomer start?
Start with Program Genesis
Red Barrels describes Program Genesis as the straightforward campaign and the main path to rebirth, with an intended difficulty from Easy to Normal. That makes it the clearest starting point if you are curious about solo play but wary of a steep opening challenge.

Know that later programs raise the challenge
In the developer’s release-era progression notes, Program X was described as Normal to Hard and Program Ultra as Hard to Very Hard, with progression gates. Those labels and gates are a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of the current progression system; consult the latest in-game descriptions and patch notes.
Does solo mode have special survival mechanics?
Red Barrels’ October 2023 patch notes documented solo-only Respawn Pills and a three-chance respawn system. The notes said respawning restored 75% and that pills found in some Syringe Boxes and Secret Rooms gave solo players extra chances; the developer described the pills as “extra chances allowing the player to go beyond the normal 3 respawns.” These are historical details from that patch, not confirmation of the current rules. Because the game continues to receive updates, check current patch notes or in-game tooltips before relying on exact respawn behavior.

What if you want teammates later?
You do not have to commit to playing alone forever. Red Barrels’ October 2023 notes documented a Group Finder with options for Any Trial, a selected Program, or a selected Trial. The same notes characterized expected waits as quick, moderate, and long respectively, while warning that queue times vary by selection, region, time of day, and other factors. Those descriptions are historical, so use the current in-game Group Finder rather than assuming a particular wait.
Red Barrels’ March 2024 launch notes also said cross-play was supported across platforms. Check current platform settings and matchmaking options for availability when you play.

Is The Outlast Trials worth playing solo?
It is a reasonable pick if what appeals to you is facing survival-horror objectives on your own, with room to learn the game’s Trials and progression over repeated attempts. It is a weaker fit if “solo” for you means an offline, linear Outlast campaign. The most cautious route is to begin with Program Genesis, then decide whether the repeatable Trial structure and pressure suit you before committing to harder progression.
