GTA VI is listed for both PS5 and PS5 Pro, with a November 19, 2026 release date, so extra demand is plausible; there is no evidence here that it will make stock worse. You do not need a PS5 Pro to play the game.
Is there a PS5 Pro shortage right now?
There is evidence of a retailer-level stock squeeze, not a confirmed shortage everywhere. In an October 10, 2026 restock update, Tom’s Guide reported Walmart was sold out at the time of its check and that Walmart had restocked on October 6. That is one retailer’s snapshot, not a count of US-wide or global inventory.

The official PlayStation US store also surfaced a purchase listing when checked for this report. Listings and inventory can change, so confirm the seller’s live stock and terms before making a trip or placing an order. The official June 2026 announcement points buyers to direct.playstation.com where available and to local retailers.

It could add interest in the console, but a worsening shortage is not established. GTA VI’s November 19, 2026 release gives the timing a plausible demand connection; the cited reporting does not show that the game caused October stockouts, quantify any effect on sales, or establish how inventory will look near launch. Treat claims that GTA VI is driving the shortage—or will intensify it—as speculation unless supported by new, specific evidence.

Do you need a PS5 Pro to play GTA VI?
No. PlayStation’s US GTA VI listing names PS5 and PS5 Pro Enhanced as platforms and gives November 19, 2026 as the release date. A standard PS5 is also listed, so a Pro is not a requirement to play.
PlayStation’s June 24, 2026 announcement describes PS5 features including DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, an integrated controller speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and the PS5 SSD. Sony’s statement that the game will “play best on PS5” is promotional wording, not an independent performance test. The cited official sources do not specify a GTA VI-specific PS5 Pro resolution, frame rate, or performance target, so no precise Pro-versus-standard-PS5 performance claim is warranted.

What should you consider before buying a PS5 Pro for the game?
- Compare total cost and actual stock. Sony’s US recommended retail price for PS5 Pro is $899.99, effective April 2, 2026. That is not a guarantee of a seller’s live price: check the current listing, seller, and stock. The official US storefront surfaced “Buy from $899.00” when checked, a store display that may change.
- Decide whether Pro features matter to you beyond GTA VI. Sony says Pro-enhanced features vary by game. The available GTA VI sources identify the Pro Enhanced label but do not specify what performance difference it will deliver.
- Account for the disc drive if you use physical media. PS5 Pro is disc-free out of the box. Sony’s separately sold compatible PS5 Disc Drive supports physical PS5 and supported PS4 discs, as well as 4K Blu-ray and DVD playback. It is unnecessary if you plan to buy GTA VI digitally.
Sony’s 2024 launch announcement lists a 2TB SSD and a DualSense controller in the PS5 Pro package. Those general console specifications do not establish a particular GTA VI performance level.
Why the headline needs qualification
“Shortage” can describe an individual retailer being out of stock, but the October 10 report does not establish a sustained or universal supply problem. Likewise, a major game’s approaching release can be a reasonable demand hypothesis without proving that it caused a stockout or will deepen one. The most defensible reading is narrower: some US retail availability was tight in October, GTA VI may increase buyer interest, and future stock is uncertain.
