The PSP is only partially usable online in 2026—not a fully supported PlayStation platform. Sony ended direct PSP Store purchasing on July 6, 2021, but says previously purchased content can still be redownloaded through the PSP’s Download List. Online multiplayer depends on each game’s servers; local Ad Hoc play is separate and may still work.
What “online support” means for a PSP
Connecting to Wi-Fi, signing in to an account, downloading a past purchase, buying a new game, and playing over the internet are different functions. A PSP might connect to a compatible network even when a store or game server is unavailable. Sony’s current support hub is organized around current products rather than the PSP: PlayStation Support.
| Feature | Status in 2026 |
|---|---|
| UMD games | Offline play works if the console and disc function. |
| Digital games already installed | Generally playable offline. |
| Redownloading previously purchased PSP content | Sony says it remains available through the PSP Download List; access depends on account, content, and service availability. |
| Buying games directly on PSP | No. PSP purchasing functions ended July 6, 2021. |
| Buying PSP content through PS3 or PS Vita | Some content may remain available there, depending on title, platform, and region. |
| Official internet multiplayer | Game-specific; do not assume a particular server is still operating. |
| Ad Hoc multiplayer | Can work locally between nearby compatible PSP systems and games. |
| Modern web browsing | Not practical or supported as a current browsing option. |
| Ongoing platform support or guaranteed Sony repair | Do not assume an active program; repair availability can depend on region and parts. |
What can you still do online?
Redownload some past purchases
Sony’s important notices state that previously purchased PSP content can still be downloaded from the device’s Download List. This is a statement about existing purchases, not a promise that every historic game, demo, video, DLC item, or regional release will remain available indefinitely. The content must be associated with an eligible account, and authorization, server, storage, or availability problems can prevent a download.
Sony’s PSP Store manual describes the Download List and the historical account workflow. It documents how the system was designed; it does not guarantee that every old function or item remains accessible now.

Connect to a network in some circumstances
A successful Wi-Fi connection only means the PSP can communicate with that network. It does not prove that account sign-in, downloads, or a game’s online service will work. The PSP’s age also makes modern routers, security settings, public-network login pages, and current account flows potential obstacles.
Play Ad Hoc with people nearby
Ad Hoc is local wireless multiplayer, not internet multiplayer. It may work when the game supports it, the consoles are compatible, and the local wireless environment allows the systems to communicate.
What stopped working—and what not to expect
The PSP is no longer a storefront
Sony says PSP search and in-game purchasing functions ended on July 6, 2021. A Store icon or old menu on the handheld does not mean new purchases are supported. Sony says PSP content that remains available on PS3 or PS Vita stores may still be purchased there, but availability varies and purchasing on those systems is not the same as a functioning PSP storefront. Check the specific title and platform before relying on that route. These details are in Sony’s important notices.

For many games, a used UMD is the straightforward way to acquire a physical copy. Inspect the disc and console condition, and confirm regional compatibility for the title and hardware. Do not treat unofficial downloads or a modified system as an endorsed replacement for Sony’s closed store.

Current web browsing is not a realistic use
The built-in browser is not a practical modern browser: current sites may fail to render, and modern security, login, video, or script requirements can cause problems. Sony also says its Trend Micro PSP web-safety service ended on May 31, 2023 (Sony notice).
Regular support and repairs are not assured
Sony does not present PSP as a normal current-console support category on its support hub. The available information does not establish an active PSP firmware-update program or a guaranteed repair service. Official repair availability and parts can vary by region; owners should not assume Sony will repair a particular unit.

Can PSP games still play online?
Official internet multiplayer: check each game
Online play depended on the infrastructure behind each title, including publisher-operated or Sony-operated servers. Some original services have been discontinued, and others may be unreliable. There is no current comprehensive Sony list confirming which PSP game servers remain live. The PlayStation service-status page reports broad modern service categories; it does not certify individual PSP game servers.
So the accurate answer is neither that all PSP online play is dead nor that it broadly works: availability is a game-by-game question. Verify a specific title’s current service before buying it for online play.
Community-run services are unofficial
Fan-run replacement servers or relay projects may restore online functions for some games. They are separate from Sony support, vary by title, can go offline, and may require custom firmware, plugins, or network changes. Configuration can be difficult and may carry security risks. Do not assume a named game works unless the relevant community service has been independently confirmed for that game and setup.

Ad Hoc is the most dependable multiplayer option
For a stock PSP, local Ad Hoc play is generally the more dependable multiplayer path because it does not rely on a remote game server. Each player needs compatible hardware; the game must support the mode, and its multiplayer setup may require each player to have a copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why might a PSP fail to connect?
Legacy wireless support can be incompatible with a router’s current security mode or configuration. Public hotspots may require a captive-portal page the PSP cannot use, while enterprise networks may have additional authentication requirements. Account sign-in can fail even after the console connects to Wi-Fi.
- Try a private, trusted network or compatible hotspot rather than an open public network. Do not assume every modern router will work with the PSP.
- Check whether the console can see and authenticate to the network. If it cannot, the problem may be the wireless configuration rather than PSN or the game.
- If Wi-Fi connects, test the specific function you need—such as a Download List item or a particular game service—because network access alone does not establish that those services are available.
- Avoid entering account credentials into suspicious or unofficial pages. Sony’s current connectivity guide covers PS4 and PS5, not PSP, so it should not be read as confirmation of PSP compatibility: PlayStation connectivity support.
Be cautious with login advice aimed at other legacy consoles. Sony’s documented Device Setup Password procedure is for PS3 and PS Vita; Sony does not establish it as a PSP login fix.

Buy for games and local use, not online services
A PSP can still make sense for UMD games, offline single-player play, an existing digital library, collecting, or local Ad Hoc sessions. Its online ecosystem is not a sound reason to buy one.
Check the hardware before you buy
- Identify the model: PSP-1000, PSP-2000, PSP-3000, or PSP Go. The PSP Go is especially dependent on existing digital purchases because it has no UMD drive.
- Test battery condition and charging, the UMD drive if present, buttons, analog stick, and screen for damage or yellowing.
- Check what memory-card solution, charger, and cables are included, and confirm the seller is actually providing the games you expect.
- Verify that your intended titles are available in the format you can use. A used system does not automatically provide access to a digital library or make a past account’s purchases available.
Choose another device if online access is the priority
If you want a current store, dependable modern networking, active online play, or ongoing platform updates, look at a currently supported handheld instead. A PS Vita can play some PSP-related content, but it is not a substitute for UMD playback or a guarantee of access to every PSP digital title. Choose based on the specific games and services you need, rather than assuming one successor preserves all PSP functions.
