The most direct choice for playing with friends is F4Multiplayer – Co-op over Steam, listed as version 0.6.0 on October 7, 2026. Its author describes it as early alpha, so expect incomplete features and take precautions with your saves.
Which Fallout 4 multiplayer mod should you try?
For Steam-invite co-op, F4Multiplayer is the closest match to the usual question of whether you can play Fallout 4 with friends. A separate project, Commonwealth Online, uses community-hosted servers and synchronizes a narrower set of systems. Neither listing establishes guaranteed stability or broad mod compatibility.

What F4Multiplayer co-op actually shares
F4Multiplayer is designed around a host inviting Steam friends into a shared session. The mod page describes shared NPC encounters and combat alongside loot, doors, locks, deaths, discoveries, time and weather. It also says friends appear as settlers wearing their gear, can be revived when downed, and can use Steam voice chat.
Quest and story progress
Side-quest progress is shared only once each player has started that quest. By default, the main story and faction progress remain individual. The host can switch on a shared-story setting, but the listing does not justify treating that as a guarantee of complete campaign synchronization. Workshop building and miscellaneous or radiant quests are explicitly not shared.

Visible rough edges
The listing notes that other players currently appear without faces and hair, and their gunshots do not show muzzle flashes. Those details, together with the alpha label and excluded systems, make this an experimental co-op experience rather than a polished multiplayer conversion.
F4Multiplayer requirements and setup
According to its Nexus listing, the current required setup is Fallout 4 version 1.11.240 on Steam, F4SE version 0.7.9, and Address Library for F4SE Plugins. Start Fallout 4 using F4SE. The page offers installation through Vortex, Mod Organizer 2 or manually.

- Confirm that you have the listed Steam version of Fallout 4 and install the specified F4SE and Address Library dependencies.
- Install F4Multiplayer using one of the methods offered on its Nexus page.
- Make sure every participant has the same version of the multiplayer mod and the same mods in the same load order.
- Launch through F4SE. The host starts the session, then friends join through Steam invite or Join Game.
- Back up your saves or use a separate save for co-op, as the mod page recommends.
These version numbers describe the requirements on the mod listing as of its October 7, 2026 upload; they may change as the project updates. Check the page before installing rather than assuming a different Fallout 4 runtime or mod setup will work.
How Commonwealth Online differs
Commonwealth Online is not simply another Steam-invite implementation. Its listing describes a dedicated-server model using community-hosted servers, with players joining through an in-game multiplayer menu. It synchronizes movement, appearance, clothing, weapons, time and weather, and offers PvP and limited PvE.

Its scope is notably narrower for shared world progression: quests, inventories, settlements, world changes and many other systems are not synchronized. It requires F4SE, Address Library and Prisma UI, and the project advises hosts to give players a required mod list. Since installed mods are not automatically synchronized, mismatched setups can lead to missing content, visual inconsistencies or synchronization issues. The listing describes the project as experimental and in active development.
Is Fallout 4 multiplayer official?
No official multiplayer mode is announced by the cited Bethesda materials. Bethesda’s November 10, 2025 Creations announcement describes an in-game menu for existing mods and Creation Club items as well as new content, with some free and some purchasable using Creation Credits. Bethesda Support’s menu guidance says the Mods and Creation Club menus were combined into Creations with the Anniversary Edition launch on November 10, 2025. These pages explain content access; they do not announce multiplayer. F4Multiplayer and Commonwealth Online are community projects hosted on Nexus Mods.

What about the F4MP project?
F4MP on GitHub is a separate pre-alpha vertical slice, not an equivalent alternative to the two current Nexus listings. Its README describes connecting to a dedicated server, seeing other players move and chatting; NPC, combat, inventory and appearance synchronization are not implemented in that status description. It also says Fallout 4 VR and the older 1.10.163 runtime are unsupported. Treat it as a distinct, limited project rather than a finished way to play the campaign cooperatively.
