Yes—but there is no exact modern-era equivalent to Total War among these two closest matches. Broken Arrow is the stronger pick for large, real-time battles with contemporary military forces. WARNO is the better fit if you want a turn-based strategic campaign that leads into real-time battles, but its setting is an alternate 1989 Cold War.
What makes a game “Total War-style” here?
The comparison depends on which part of Total War matters to you: a broad strategic campaign, real-time battles, or both. Neither game is established by its official descriptions as a direct modern Total War equivalent. Broken Arrow most closely matches the modern battlefield side; WARNO offers a clearer strategic campaign layer but not a contemporary setting.
- Modern setting and real-time combined-arms battles: start with Broken Arrow.
- Turn-based strategy campaign connected to real-time battles: consider WARNO if an alternate 1989 setting works for you.
Broken Arrow: the modern battlefield match
Broken Arrow is described by its publisher as a large-scale, real-time modern warfare tactics game. Its setting centers on the Baltic region, and the official store descriptions advertise more than 300 military units and technologies. That unit count is a developer and store feature claim, not an independent measurement.
Campaign and ways to play
The publisher describes a 19-mission campaign told from U.S. and Russian perspectives. It also lists AI skirmishes, multiplayer for up to 5v5, army customization and a scenario editor. Those features give you campaign missions and repeatable battles, but the reviewed official descriptions do not establish a turn-based grand-campaign map in the style of Total War.

#1 Best Overall
Broken Arrow was released on Steam on June 19, 2025, according to its Steam listing. Slitherine’s publisher page listed a main-game update dated July 31, 2026, and Russian Guard DLC dated August 31, 2026. Availability, editions, system requirements and prices can change; check the store pages for current details. Slitherine says purchases from its own store provide a Steam key for multiplayer functionality.
WARNO: the campaign-layer alternative
WARNO pairs real-time tactical battles with turn-based Army General campaigns. Its Steam description lists five such campaigns and more than 1,000 military units; both counts are vendor claims. Its setting is an alternate 1989 conflict between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, not contemporary 21st-century warfare.

- Used Book in Good Condition
That makes WARNO the closer match if the strategic campaign-and-battle structure matters more to you than modern equipment. It is not the answer if “modern era” is the deciding requirement.

| Priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Contemporary military setting | Broken Arrow | Its battles are presented as modern warfare, in a Baltic-region theater. |
| Turn-based strategic campaign leading into real-time battles | WARNO | Its official description explicitly lists turn-based Army General campaigns alongside real-time tactical battles. |
| Campaign missions and solo skirmishes in a modern setting | Broken Arrow | The publisher lists a 19-mission campaign and AI skirmish mode. |
| Online battles | Either, depending on the format you want | Broken Arrow lists multiplayer up to 5v5; consult WARNO’s current store page for its listed modes and details. |
The practical answer is to start with Broken Arrow if you want modern forces and large real-time engagements. Choose WARNO if a turn-based strategic layer is essential and you are willing to trade the contemporary setting for an alternate Cold War one. These recommendations follow the official feature descriptions; they are not based on firsthand playtesting.
