To make night gaming more comfortable, adjust the TV or monitor first, then use the PS5’s indicator-light and accessibility options where they fit.
Information checked against Sony support documentation available as of August 18, 2026.
What “Night Mode” could mean
People use the term for several different changes: a darker interface, lower panel brightness, a warmer color temperature, reduced blue-light output, or an automatic schedule. The PS5 does not provide one system setting that performs those jobs. Its picture is sent to an external television or monitor, so most nighttime adjustments belong on that display.
PS5 settings that can help
Dim the physical console light
If the bright glow on the console is the problem, set its indicator to Dim:
#1 Best Overall
- Reliable high-performance Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable
- 10-foot (3 meter) length and included cable tie for ultimate setup flexibility
- Uninterrupted speed and maximum visual performance
- Transmits 4K resolution at 120 Hz and 8k resolution at 60 Hz as specified in HDMI 2.1
- Supports up to 48 Gbps bandwidth
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select System.
- Choose Beep and Light.
- Select Brightness, then choose Dim.
Sony lists Dim, Medium and Bright as the available levels. This affects only the PS5’s physical power indicator; it does not darken the TV, change game brightness, alter the home screen, or add a blue-light filter. See Sony’s instructions at PS5 console beep and light settings.
Use accessibility display controls for specific needs
Open Settings > Accessibility > Display and Sound. Sony documents these options in its PS5 accessibility settings:
- Reduce Motion: reduces some interface movement. It does not dim the image or remove blue wavelengths, and it may not control every effect in every game.
- High Contrast: increases the difference between text and backgrounds for legibility. It is not a brightness-reduction mode.
- Color Correction: applies selectable filters with an intensity control. It is intended for alternative color perception, not as a general night filter, and can change game colors.
- Invert Colors: reverses text and background colors. It is not a natural dark theme and can make menus, images and games look unusual. Sony states that enabling it turns HDR off.
- Text Size and Bold Text: improve readability without changing screen light output.
Video-output controls are not a night filter
Under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, the PS5 provides controls such as resolution, 120 Hz Output, ALLM, Video Transfer Rate, HDR, Adjust HDR, Deep Color Output and RGB Range. Sony’s 4K resolution guide explains these options.

Turning HDR off can make an image appear less intense on some displays, but it does not create a blue-light filter or dark mode. Incorrect RGB Range settings can make blacks look crushed or gray. Lowering resolution or refresh rate is not a dependable way to reduce discomfort, so use these controls for compatibility and picture quality rather than as the primary nighttime solution.

Because the display produces the visible light, make changes in this order:
- Keep some soft room lighting. A completely dark room can make a bright screen feel harsher and increase reflections or pupil adjustment.
- Lower Backlight, OLED Light or panel brightness. This controls the display’s overall light output. The label varies by TV or monitor.
- Choose Cinema, Filmmaker or another less-vivid preset. Vivid and Dynamic modes often drive brightness and contrast aggressively.
- Try Eye Comfort, Low Blue Light, Night Shift, Warm Color or Reduce Blue. Names and effects depend on the manufacturer and model. A warmer picture can look yellow or orange and may reduce color accuracy.
- Reduce excessive Dynamic Contrast or Local Dimming only if it is causing discomfort. These controls change highlight and shadow behavior; they are not equivalent to blue-light reduction.
- Calibrate the individual game. Use its brightness, gamma, HDR calibration, color-filter or accessibility controls.
- Dim the PS5 indicator separately if the console light is distracting.
- Take regular breaks and increase viewing distance. Persistent pain, headaches or visual symptoms warrant advice from an appropriate health professional.
Check the display’s manual for exact menu names. A television’s “Night Mode” can sometimes mean reduced brightness or warmer color, but on some home-theater equipment it refers only to audio compression or volume normalization.

Can the PS5 switch to Night Mode automatically?
Sony’s current PS5 documentation does not list a schedule that changes the interface, color temperature or video brightness at sunset or at a selected time. The console’s power-saving feature is different:
- Press the PS button.
- Select Power.
- Choose Enter Rest Mode.
Rest Mode lowers console activity and power use and can support functions such as controller charging and updates. It does not dim the television and is not a display night mode. If automatic changes matter, look for scheduling in the TV or monitor’s own Eye Comfort feature, a supported smart-TV routine, or your room lighting.

PS5 versus Xbox Night Mode
Xbox has separately documented a system Night Mode with screen-dimming and blue-light controls in its accessibility updates: Xbox accessibility updates. That feature does not establish an equivalent option on PS5. On Sony’s console, the practical solution remains the external display’s picture controls plus targeted PS5 or game accessibility settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make the PS5 home screen black?
Sony’s current PS5 support instructions do not document a normal light/dark theme selector. Invert Colors reverses colors but is an accessibility feature, not a conventional dark theme.
Does PS5 have a blue-light filter?
No dedicated PS5 blue-light filter is documented. Use the TV or monitor’s Low Blue Light, Eye Comfort or warm-color setting instead.
Should I disable HDR at night?
Not automatically. HDR comfort depends on the display, preset, room and calibration. Lower the display’s light output first; disable HDR only if your particular setup looks better without it.
Does Rest Mode dim the TV?
No. Rest Mode is a low-power console state and does not apply a nighttime picture mode to the connected display.
