No final wave is documented in World War Z’s Horde Mode. It is designed as a survival activity: keep the zombies away from civilians for as long as your team can. A run ends when the team is defeated or chooses to stop, not when it reaches a known official ending wave.
Why Horde Mode has no documented final wave
Lead Game Designer Sergey Danchenko describes the objective as “survive as long as possible and prevent the zombies from getting to the civilians.” Saber’s official game page likewise calls Horde Mode XL “endless waves of increasingly difficult zombies.” These descriptions point to an ongoing survival challenge, not a story mission with a final boss or ending stage.

That means a wave number should not be treated as the game’s official endpoint. Saber’s descriptions establish the endless-survival design, but do not specify a universal maximum wave or cap.
What “XL” means in Horde Mode XL
XL does not mean a finite bonus campaign. Horde Mode XL includes waves with unusually large numbers of zombies, alongside the escalating survival challenge. It also lets teams use supplies to activate enhanced defenses at the start of an XL wave. The defense available depends on the area:

Standard Horde Mode, XL, or Challenge: what’s the difference?
These are different ways to play rather than documented modes with different fixed run lengths. Standard Horde Mode is the traditional survival option; XL adds its large-zombie-count waves and area-specific enhanced defenses. Horde Mode Challenge is another mode Saber introduced in January 2023.
Saber’s FAQ, accessed October 8, 2026, lists standard Horde Mode for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. It lists Horde Mode XL for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The FAQ also identifies the XL map set in an abandoned military museum in Phoenix, Arizona, as the latest map it lists; availability and listings can change as the game is updated.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long does a Horde Mode run last?
There is no documented universal duration or wave count. Your run continues while the team survives and ends when the team is defeated or elects to stop. The official sources do not establish an exact failure rule for every map and difficulty, nor a universal reward threshold, so a particular wave or session length should not be presented as the game-wide limit.
