Can Sims date or flirt with their relatives?
According to EA’s February 3, 2026 update notes, close relatives are prohibited from romantic involvement. EA says this rule prevents autonomous flirting between in-laws and step-relatives. This is EA’s published description of the game’s rule, not a claim that every possible family connection has been individually defined.

The same update added family-tree labels such as half-sister, stepfather, cousin’s child, distant relative, and relative-in-law. EA does not specify in those notes which of the newly listed extended-family categories count as “close” for the romance restriction, so the published wording does not settle every edge case. Why might related Sims have flirted before?
EA acknowledged a related behavior bug in a July 26, 2024 family-fix post: related Sims could form inappropriate relationships through Neighborhood Stories when “Romance Changes” was enabled. EA said it fixed that issue; its July 29, 2024 console update notes also included the fix. EA’s post additionally says Lovestruck no longer generates inappropriate phone calls from relatives. That documented bug concerned autonomous game behavior, not a general rule allowing family romance. If you encounter unexpected flirting, the official notes establish that a Neighborhood Stories issue existed and was addressed, but they do not identify every possible cause of a similar event in a particular save.
Do Romantic Boundaries or Lovestruck let relatives romance?
No official guidance reviewed describes Romantic Boundaries as an override for the family-member restriction. EA presents those settings as controls for jealousy and romantic exclusivity. Lovestruck adds dating and romance features, including Romance Dynamics and attraction, but EA’s help information does not say those features permit close-relative romance. In short, romance customization and the family restriction are distinct in EA’s published descriptions: settings about jealousy, exclusivity, attraction, or relationship behavior are not documented as a way to enable close-relative romance. EA’s Lovestruck information.

EA’s wording supports a clear answer for close relatives, in-laws, and step-relatives, but its public notes do not define the cutoff for every distant or extended relationship. They also do not establish how custom family setups or mods affect the restriction. Those cases should not be treated as confirmed exceptions—or confirmed to behave identically—based on the official notes alone.
