Is Thick as Thieves Worth Playing? A Preview of Its Stealth Heists

Thick as Thieves pairs stealth heists with solo and two-player co-op. Its systems impressed one preview writer, though repeated maps and a short early campaign limited the replay appeal.

Thick as Thieves is a solo or two-player co-op stealth heist game set in an alternate early-1900s Scotland. In PCGamesN’s May 19, 2026 preview, Aaron Down found its stealth systems and improvised co-op moments enjoyable, but questioned whether its short opening campaign and repeated trips through the same maps would hold attention over time. That makes it most appealing to players who want inventive stealth runs with a partner, rather than a long campaign with a strong replay story.

What kind of game is Thick as Thieves?

Set in Kilcairn, an alternate Scottish city where magic and Edwardian technology coexist, Thick as Thieves sends players on stealth-focused heists. Down’s preview names Elway Manor and Constables’ Guildhall as launch maps. The publisher describes the released game as playable solo or with a co-op partner; it is not the competitive PvPvE game described in its earlier pitch. Steam’s current listing gives May 20, 2026 as the release date, while Megabit’s official page presents the game as available on Steam.

How does stealth work?

Down’s account describes stealth as a combination of reading the environment and managing the noise and visibility you create. Light and shadow, disguises, movement speed, guard patrols, traps, and gadgets all matter. Carpet can muffle footsteps, while thrown objects can draw guards away from a route. These tools make a heist about adapting to the immediate situation, not simply following a fixed path.

Two thieves, two approaches

The preview describes two playable characters with distinct abilities: Spider has a reusable zipwire, while Chameleon uses a disguise mask. These are details from the May preview, not a guarantee that every mechanic is unchanged in the latest build.

What did the preview find enjoyable—and what wore thin?

Down spent nearly ten hours with the game and reported 16 story contracts, three difficulty options, and two launch maps. Those are figures from his preview, not independently audited totals. He liked the moment-to-moment stealth and the possibilities for co-op, where players can create unscripted solutions together. His reservation was the structure: returning to the same story maps and repeating the early campaign loop became less compelling over time.

That is one writer’s hands-on assessment, not a consensus or a prediction for every player. The practical trade-off is clear: players drawn to stealth systems and shared improvisation may get more from the game than players looking for substantial map variety or a long campaign that continually introduces new spaces.

How does co-op and ongoing support work?

The team’s August community update describes peer-to-peer co-op, options to host friends or join public games, and the removal of random matchmaking. It calls that update the final planned technical update and says the team does not expect further bug fixes or technical improvements. An earlier July message said no more content updates were planned and explained the move away from dedicated servers. These are the team’s announced plans in those updates; they do not establish what matchmaking or network services are live at any later date. Check the official Steam community updates for the latest operational status before planning a public or online session.

Is it worth playing?

Thick as Thieves is a reasonable fit if you want a compact stealth game built around manipulating guards, using gadgets, and coordinating a heist with a friend. It is a less certain choice if campaign length, varied maps, regular new content, or a dependable matchmaking service are central to what you want. Down’s preview suggests the stealth is the strongest reason to play, while the limited early campaign loop is the key reason not to expect it to sustain interest indefinitely.
