Is Tyranitar Stronger Than Garchomp? Stats and Battle Matchup

Garchomp usually has the edge in a direct fight, but Tyranitar is stronger in several stats and the outcome depends on the game, moves, and battle conditions.

Usually, Garchomp has the edge in a one-on-one fight between their ordinary forms: its much higher Speed and access to super-effective Ground attacks make it a difficult matchup for Tyranitar. Tyranitar is not weaker in every respect, though—it has slightly higher base Attack and stronger defensive stats. Both have a base-stat total of 600, but those points are distributed differently.

How their base stats compare

These are ordinary-form base stats, not the stats a particular trained Pokémon will have in battle. Pokémon Database lists the following values for Tyranitar and Garchomp.

Stat Tyranitar Garchomp Edge
HP 100 108 Garchomp
Attack 134 130 Tyranitar
Defense 110 95 Tyranitar
Special Attack 95 80 Tyranitar
Special Defense 100 85 Tyranitar
Speed 61 102 Garchomp
Base-stat total 600 600 Tied

The tie in total does not mean they perform the same role. Tyranitar’s spread leans toward Attack and defenses; Garchomp has more HP and is far faster.

Why Garchomp is usually favored head-to-head

Speed gives Garchomp the initiative

Garchomp’s base Speed is 102 against Tyranitar’s 61, so an otherwise comparable Garchomp will usually act first. Going first can let it land a hit before Tyranitar responds. Turn order is not guaranteed by base Speed alone: moves, held items, status effects, priority, speed control, and the battle’s rules can change it.

Ground attacks exploit Tyranitar’s typing

Tyranitar is Rock/Dark, while Garchomp is Dragon/Ground. Ground-type attacks are super effective against Tyranitar because of its Rock typing. That gives Garchomp a direct offensive route if it has an appropriate Ground move and can use it; typing alone does not guarantee a knockout.

Where Tyranitar has the advantage

Tyranitar’s base Attack is 134 to Garchomp’s 130, and it has higher base Defense, Special Attack, and Special Defense. It is therefore wrong to call Garchomp stronger in every stat or to infer that Tyranitar simply has more HP: Garchomp’s base HP is 108, compared with Tyranitar’s 100.

Raw stats do not settle damage or survival on their own. The move used, type effectiveness, STAB, the opponent’s relevant defense, and battle conditions all matter. A Tyranitar with a favorable set or conditions can make the matchup much closer than the headline comparison suggests.

Abilities and competitive value depend on the format

Pokémon Database lists Sand Stream and Unnerve for Tyranitar, and Sand Veil and Rough Skin for Garchomp. Which ability matters depends on the ability in use and the specific game’s battle rules. Competitive usefulness is likewise format-specific: a ranking or role in one ruleset is not a universal verdict across Pokémon games. For example, Smogon’s Scarlet/Violet Garchomp analysis addresses that particular format.

What you need to determine a precise winner

The stat and type comparison supports a general prediction, not a tested turn-by-turn result. To calculate a specific matchup, first fix the game generation and format, then compare the actual Pokémon’s levels, IVs, EVs, natures, moves, held items, abilities, and field conditions. Without those details, the fairest short answer is that Garchomp is usually favored in a direct fight, while Tyranitar has meaningful strengths that can change the outcome.
