Is UFO 50 Worth Buying If You Prefer Longer, Story-Driven Games?

UFO 50 has longer adventures and a web of shared fiction, but it remains a varied library of separate games rather than one continuous story.

Yes, if you’re happy to find longer adventures among many shorter, separate games. No, if what you want most is one sustained campaign with a consistent cast, combat system, and plot. UFO 50 includes a full JRPG and other exploratory adventures, plus a shared fictional history and secrets that link parts of the collection. But it is a library of 50 games, all available from the start—not one long story.

What you’re buying: a library, not a single campaign

Mossmouth describes UFO 50 on Steam as 50 complete games spanning platformers, shoot ’em ups, puzzle games, roguelites, and RPGs. They are single-player and multiplayer experiences, and the full library is available at the start. The games vary in length: the collection ranges from small arcade-style experiences to larger adventures, including a JRPG that could take many hours to beat.

That variety changes what “long” means here. You can spend a long time with an individual game, but UFO 50 does not present those games as chapters in one continuous campaign. You choose among them rather than following a single plot from beginning to end.

Which games offer a longer, more involved experience?

Grimstone: a full JRPG

The official listing identifies Grimstone as a full JRPG set in a fictional American West swallowed by Hell. It features a party you create, skill-based combat elements, and ways to strategically avoid some overworld encounters. The listing says the game could take many hours to beat, but does not give a completion-time estimate.

Campanella 2: exploratory adventure

The Steam description also highlights Campanella 2, an exploratory adventure with procedurally generated levels. It is another example of a more sustained experience within the collection, though the official description does not provide a playtime figure.

These games make UFO 50 more appealing to someone seeking depth than a collection made only of quick arcade rounds would be. They do not establish that every game is long or story-heavy; the collection deliberately mixes formats and scales.

Does UFO 50 have an overarching story?

It has a shared fictional backdrop, not one continuous plot campaign. The games are presented as releases from a made-up 1980s company, UFO Soft, with recurring characters and sequels connecting parts of the library. GamesRadar describes the fictional releases as dating from 1982–1989; that is the setting’s timeline, not the real development period.

The fiction also rewards discovery. A GamesRadar developer feature reports that the Terminal contains clues and that a scavenger hunt leads to a hidden 51st game. This is a meta-narrative built from connections and secrets, rather than a conventional protagonist arc delivered through one long sequence of missions. Developer Eric Suhrke described the design this way: “UFO 50 is all about exploration.”

Is that structure a good match for you?

If you want… How UFO 50 fits
One protagonist’s story carried through a lengthy campaign Not a close match: it is a collection of separate games, not one continuous campaign.
Many hours in a single game A partial match: Grimstone is described as a full JRPG that could take many hours, but no exact completion time is stated.
A consistent genre and combat system A poor match: the collection shifts among genres and styles.
Retro games with connections, secrets, and lore to piece together A stronger match: recurring characters, sequels, the Terminal, and a scavenger hunt link parts of its fictional world.
Freedom to switch between different experiences A strong match: all 50 games are playable from the start.

In practical terms, buy it for the breadth of the collection and the possibility of settling into its longer adventures—not because it promises the steady narrative rhythm of a story-driven RPG. If you enjoy sampling different genres and treating discovery as part of the appeal, its structure may be a strength. If frequent changes of game, mechanics, and story are likely to break your immersion, that same structure is the main trade-off.

Release and review snapshot

UFO 50 was released on September 18, 2024, according to its Steam listing. When that listing was checked in 2026, it showed 95% positive from 6,572 English-language user reviews and 84% positive from 50 recent reviews. These are changeable platform figures, and the recent-review percentage comes from a much smaller sample; neither rating indicates whether the game’s collection format suits your preference for a sustained story.
