UFO 50 does not have one save-and-resume rule that applies to every game in the collection. Check the individual game’s Continue or progress options, and wait for the spinning-disk save notice to disappear before exiting. On Windows, the game’s save files are in %LOCALAPPDATA%ufo50.
How to continue a game in UFO 50
- Launch UFO 50 and open the game you want to play.
- Look for that game’s Continue option or progress selection. What it remembers—and where you find that option—depends on the individual game.
- Before quitting, wait until the spinning-disk save notification is no longer visible. Mossmouth’s Technical Support (Read First) post warns that exiting while a save notification is on screen can corrupt future save files.
Do not assume that quitting in the middle of a run preserves your exact position. For example, a player answering a question about Avianos reported that completed levels are remembered, but an unfinished match is not; the player said to choose Continue and select the level reached. Where UFO 50 saves progress on Windows
Mossmouth identifies the Windows save directory as %LOCALAPPDATA%ufo50, usually shown as C:Users[Your Name]AppDataLocalufo50. It can contain configuration and account data, .ufo save-game files, and .bak backups. If you cannot locate the folder, search your PC for *.ufo. These instructions are for Windows; the support post does not establish equivalent paths or recovery steps for macOS, Linux, or Steam Deck.
Recover a missing or corrupted Windows save
Use the developer’s repair guidance cautiously: first preserve the files, then replace only the relevant save. Do not start by uninstalling the game.

- Temporarily turn off Steam Cloud for UFO 50. In Steam, open the game’s Properties and disable its Steam Cloud option while troubleshooting. Mossmouth recommends this to prevent Cloud from restoring a corrupt save or configuration during repair.
- Open the save directory. Go to
%LOCALAPPDATA%ufo50, or search the PC for*.ufo. - Make a separate copy. Copy the full UFO 50 folder somewhere safe before editing anything. At minimum, preserve the candidate backup files.
- For a save-file error, find the matching profile and backup. Identify the relevant
saveX.ufofile and a datedsaveX_*.bakbackup. Copy the backup to a safe location first. Then rename a working copy of that backup to the target save filename and use it to replace the target file. If the newest backup does not work, try an older one. - Handle an account-file error separately. Mossmouth says deleting
account.ufoshould not affect game progress. That advice is not the same as replacing asaveX.ufoprofile file. - Restore Steam Cloud after the game works. Re-enable it once the repair is successful. If Steam presents a local-versus-cloud conflict, choose carefully: the support guidance does not document every conflict outcome.
Mossmouth describes uninstalling and removing remaining UFO 50 files only as an option for someone who deliberately wants a completely fresh start; it resets the game’s data. Keep that distinct from save recovery.
What Steam Cloud support does—and does not—tell you
Steam’s UFO 50 listing identifies the game as supporting Steam Cloud. The listing does not explain synchronization timing or guarantee that Cloud will restore every lost save. Treat it as a sync feature, not as a substitute for waiting for the save indicator or keeping a copy before attempting file recovery.

Why the answer varies by game
UFO 50 is a collection of separate games, and the available guidance does not provide a reliable, complete inventory of their save behavior. To determine what a particular game preserves, check whether it saves automatically or manually, whether it records completed stages only or an in-progress session, where its Continue option appears, and what happens after returning to the UFO 50 selection screen. The Avianos report establishes only the completed-level versus unfinished-match distinction for that game; do not apply it to other titles without checking them.
