Valor Mortis is worth buying at its reported $40 launch price only if you specifically want first-person parry combat, a grim alternate-history Napoleonic setting, and fast traversal between fights. Early reviews praise its atmosphere and satisfying parries, but also report awkward first-person encounters and an uneven difficulty curve. If fair telegraphs and consistently readable enemy spacing are essential to you, waiting for patches or a discount is the safer choice. If the premise itself is the attraction and you accept some rough edges, the game offers a distinctive Soulslike concept that few alternatives attempt.
What Valor Mortis is
Valor Mortis is a first-person action Soulslike from One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner. You play William, a former soldier of Napoleon’s Grande Armée who rises from death during a mysterious plague. The campaign combines melee combat, ranged weapons, supernatural abilities, environmental traversal, and exploration through a war-torn alternate-history Europe.

The basic loop is familiar to Soulslike players: explore dangerous areas, learn enemy patterns, defeat bosses, spend or risk a primary currency, and return to rest points that restore your resources while resetting ordinary enemies. The first-person perspective and movement systems are the distinguishing features. Instead of viewing your character from behind, you read attacks from inside the guard, aim weapons directly, and use traversal skills to move through vertical spaces.

Reviews describe a rhythm that alternates between deliberate, close-range fights and bursts of wall-running, grappling, swinging, and platform jumping.

How the combat works
First-person melee and parrying
Parrying is the combat idea around which the rest of the system is built. You fight at close range in first person, watch for an incoming strike, and attempt to deflect it with precise timing. A successful parry can create an opening for a counterattack; a miss leaves you exposed. This makes the camera more than a presentation choice: your weapon, the enemy’s body, and the attack animation all occupy the same forward-facing space.
That viewpoint gives successful defenses a strong sense of impact. TechRadar reviewer James Pickard described the combat as snappy and satisfying, while Game Informer reviewer Wesley LeBlanc considered the first-person approach novel. The same perspective can make mistakes harder to diagnose. An enemy that moves outside the center of your view, an attack arriving from the edge of the screen, or several bodies crowding you can reduce the reaction time you thought you had.
Ranged weapons and supernatural powers
Melee is not your only option. Ranged weapons and supernatural powers supplement the sword-focused fighting, giving you ways to pressure enemies before they enter striking distance or exploit openings created by a parry. The available material does not establish a complete weapon list, ammunition economy, or a universal “best build,” so do not approach the game expecting a fixed meta or a guaranteed dominant loadout.
In practice, the systems are most useful when treated as tools for solving specific encounters. A ranged attack can help separate a dangerous target from a group; a supernatural ability can create breathing room or capitalize on a stagger. Your success depends less on collecting every option than on learning which tool answers the threat in front of you.
Rest points, death, and recovery
Game Informer describes the familiar Soulslike consequences: dying costs your primary currency, and you can attempt to retrieve it by returning to the death location. Rest points restore you and reset enemies, creating a choice between pushing deeper with an unbanked resource and returning safely before a difficult fight.

This loop makes route knowledge valuable. Once you know where a difficult enemy, shortcut, or boss arena sits, a failed attempt becomes less expensive in time. Early difficulty spikes are more frustrating when the route back is long or when the camera makes a previously manageable group feel unpredictable.
Movement and environmental traversal
One More Level brings movement experience from Ghostrunner into a game that otherwise asks for Soulslike patience. Wall-running, grappling, swinging, and platform jumps appear between combat spaces. These sequences add verticality and provide a change of pace from reading attack animations.
Traversal is not simply decoration. It helps define how you explore the wartime environments, reach alternate paths, and move through spaces that would be ordinary corridors in a conventional melee game. The trade-off is that fast movement and careful combat demand different kinds of control. A player who enjoys momentum-based platforming may find the transitions refreshing; a player who wants every room to be a clean duel may find the shifts distracting.
The developer said it worked on the balance between platforming and combat after demo feedback. That statement confirms the team recognized the transition as an important design issue, but it does not independently prove that every sequence is now perfectly balanced.
How difficult is Valor Mortis?
Early-game learning curve
Difficulty is the largest reason to hesitate. Game Informer’s reviewer reported that the opening hours could feel unfair because enemies left too little room to learn and react. The review later found the challenge more satisfying, possibly helped by upgrades to stamina, health, and weapons. That progression suggests the game may become more legible as your character improves, but it also means the opening can test your patience before the systems fully click.
Difficulty in a parry-focused first-person game is not identical to difficulty in a third-person Soulslike. In a third-person view, you can often see an enemy’s full body, your own position, and another attacker entering from the side. In first person, your field of view and camera position determine what information arrives in time. A fight can therefore feel difficult because the timing is strict, because the attack is hidden, or because multiple enemies occupy awkward screen positions. Those are different problems, and the reviews suggest that Valor Mortis sometimes crosses between them.

The General Lothaire change
The developer said the demo placed General Lothaire too early. In the full game, the boss was intended for the end of Chapter II, after players had more time to learn the mechanics and level up. That is evidence of a concrete progression adjustment rather than proof that every encounter was rebalanced.
The change matters if you played the demo and found its first major challenge disproportionate. Your demo experience should not be treated as a direct preview of the final encounter order. The developer also said feedback work addressed combat readability, hitbox range, staggering, boss variety and difficulty curve, performance optimization, and the relationship between platforming and combat.
What difficulty-sensitive players should expect
- Expect to practice parries. The game’s core defense is timing-based, so repeated attempts are part of the intended loop.
- Expect some encounters to be less readable than others. Reviews specifically mention first-person friction and uneven balance.
- Use progression systems deliberately. Health, stamina, and weapon upgrades may make later challenges feel fairer, but they do not eliminate the need to learn enemy behavior.
- Do not assume demo difficulty equals full-game difficulty. The boss order and polish changed after the demo.
Reported strengths and flaws
What reviewers like
TechRadar praised the atmosphere and the feel of the parry-centered combat. Game Informer found the first-person combat novel and the world promising. Together, those reactions identify the game’s strongest case: it has a recognizable Soulslike structure but expresses it through a perspective and movement language that are unusual for the genre.
The setting also gives the combat a specific identity. You are not fighting in a generic medieval fantasy world; you are a resurrected Napoleonic soldier confronting monsters and a plague in an alternate history. If that combination of military imagery, supernatural horror, and close-range dueling appeals to you, the setting may carry you through rougher encounters.
Where the first-person camera causes friction
Pickard’s review says some encounters become clunky or irritating in first person and criticizes what the reviewer calls an “obsession with trickery.” Treat those as critical judgments, not universal defects. They point to situations where the game’s design asks you to interpret an attack or navigate an arena in ways that may feel clever to one player and opaque to another.
First-person melee also changes how you evaluate fairness. A hit can feel unavoidable when an enemy enters from outside your immediate view, even if the animation is technically visible. Tight spaces, overlapping attack ranges, and enemies that force rapid camera corrections are the situations most likely to expose that weakness.

Uneven balance
LeBlanc’s review says balance issues mar the action and that the early difficulty can cross into unfairness. The same review describes a later stretch that settles into a more compelling “one more try” challenge. This is a useful distinction: the problem is not simply that the game is hard. The concern is that the quality of the challenge varies, with some sections teaching and testing the systems better than others.

Is the demo representative of the full game?
Not completely. One More Level explicitly said the demo was no longer representative of the quality and polish planned for the full release. The developer also moved General Lothaire later in the progression and said it responded to feedback about readability, hitboxes, staggering, boss variety, difficulty, performance, and traversal balance.
That makes the demo useful for judging whether you like the basic idea of first-person parrying and movement, but unreliable as a final verdict on encounter order or polish. If you disliked the premise itself, the full release is unlikely to change your mind. If you disliked a specific early spike, camera problem, or performance issue, verify whether the current version addresses it before ruling the game out.

TechRadar’s Pickard reported more than 100 frames per second at 1440p on High settings with frame generation, maintained almost all the time during that review. That is one reviewer’s result on one hardware configuration. It is not a benchmark you should expect from every 1440p PC, and frame generation can affect latency and image quality differently across systems.

Price and value
GamesRadar reported a $40 launch price in September 2026. Lyrical Games boss Blake Rochkind said the price reflected a crowded release window and the desire to offer a game players could buy alongside larger releases. He also said the decision was heavily considered because a lower price could send the wrong message about the game.
$40 is a reported US price point, not a universal current price. Regional taxes, currency conversion, storefront policies, launch promotions, editions, and later discounts can all change what you pay. Check your local listing before treating the figure as definitive.
At that price, value depends on tolerance for unevenness. You are paying for a focused single-player concept, not a guaranteed polished benchmark for first-person melee. Players who value novelty, atmosphere, and the chance to master a demanding parry system may get good value even if a few encounters irritate them. Players who expect consistently transparent boss design should wait for a sale or clearer evidence that patches have addressed the reported issues.
Who should buy Valor Mortis now?
Buy at the current price if these describe you
- You actively want a first-person Soulslike rather than another third-person action game.
- Parry timing, repeated attempts, and learning enemy patterns sound appealing.
- The Napoleonic alternate-history horror setting is a major part of the attraction.
- You enjoy movement systems such as wall-running, grappling, swinging, and platform jumps between fights.
- You can tolerate some awkward enemy spacing, camera friction, or uneven early difficulty.
- The current regional price fits your budget even if a discount arrives later.
Wait for patches, reviews, or a discount if these describe you
- You need reliably readable attack telegraphs and generous reaction windows.
- You dislike first-person melee in crowded arenas or narrow spaces.
- You want a difficulty curve that teaches its rules smoothly from the opening hours.
- You are buying primarily for technical performance and cannot accept uncertainty beyond the listed requirements.
- You played the demo and were bothered by encounter balance rather than merely by the boss placement.
A practical buying checklist
- Check your platform. Confirm that you are buying the PC or PS5 version you actually own. The listed PlayStation version is single-player and offline, with DualSense effects and PS5 Pro enhancement.
- Check the live regional price. The reported $40 figure came from a September 2026 price report and may not match your currency, taxes, edition, or current promotion.
- Check the current version. Look for patch notes addressing readability, hitboxes, staggering, boss difficulty, performance, or traversal balance.
- Check hardware on PC. Steam lists 16 GB RAM, 50 GB storage, and DirectX 12 in both minimum and recommended sections, while further notes are not provided.
- Decide how much novelty is worth to you. If first-person parrying and the setting are the purchase, launch value is easier to justify. If smooth balance is the purchase, waiting reduces risk.
How to compare it with other games
“Soulslike” covers too many different experiences to answer the buying question by genre label alone. Compare a potential alternative using the same criteria that define Valor Mortis:
| Comparison axis | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Combat feel | Does the game emphasize parry timing, dodging, blocking, ranged attacks, or ability management? |
| Difficulty fairness | Are enemy animations and attack ranges clear, and how quickly does the game teach its rules? |
| Camera and readability | Can you track multiple enemies and identify attacks before they connect? |
| Traversal | Is movement a major skill system, a short interlude, or mostly absent? |
| Progression | Do health, stamina, and weapon upgrades meaningfully smooth difficult sections? |
| Platform and performance | Does the game support your hardware, display target, and preferred controller features? |
| Price and timing | Is the current regional price appropriate for a launch-day purchase, or would a sale better match the remaining uncertainty? |
Verdict
Valor Mortis is a calculated buy, not a universal recommendation. Its first-person parry combat, supernatural powers, Napoleonic horror setting, and movement sequences give it a clear identity. Launch reviews indicate that the central idea can be satisfying and that the later game may deliver the “one more try” tension Soulslike players want.
The risk is execution. First-person encounters can become clunky, early difficulty can feel unfair, and balance varies from section to section. The developer made meaningful changes after demo feedback, but those statements do not guarantee that every launch concern is resolved. Buy now if the premise is exactly what you have been waiting for and you can accept rough edges. Wait if fair telegraphs, predictable spacing, and technical certainty matter more than originality.
