Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNeither Wisdom nor Intelligence is a Sorcerer’s spellcasting ability in D&D 5e. In both the 2014 rules and the 2024 revision, Sorcerers use Charisma for their spells. Once Charisma is accounted for, choose Wisdom or Intelligence based on the checks your campaign is likely to call for and the skills your character has.
What matters most for Sorcerer spellcasting?
Charisma determines a Sorcerer’s standard spell save DC and spell attack modifier under the 2014 rules. The 2014 Sorcerer rules give the formulas as 8 + proficiency bonus + Charisma modifier for spell save DC, and proficiency bonus + Charisma modifier for spell attacks. The 2024 Sorcerer rules likewise state that Charisma is the spellcasting ability for Sorcerer spells.
So if your question is which score to prioritize for casting, the answer is Charisma—not Wisdom or Intelligence. The Wisdom-versus-Intelligence choice is about non-spell tasks such as noticing danger, reading people, recalling lore, or investigating clues.
What Wisdom and Intelligence contribute
The 2014 Basic Rules group several common skills under each ability. These associations help explain where each score tends to matter; a check’s exact ability can depend on what the character is trying to do and the DM’s ruling.

| Ability | Associated skills | Typical uses |
|---|---|---|
| Wisdom | Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Survival | Spotting or hearing things, assessing intentions, treating injuries, handling animals, tracking, and navigating. |
| Intelligence | Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion | Recalling magical, historical, natural, or religious lore; examining clues and reasoning out what happened. |
The official 2014 rules for using ability scores describe the skill associations and examples. They do not rank Wisdom and Intelligence for Sorcerers; any ranking depends on the adventures your group plays.
When should a Sorcerer favor Wisdom?
Favor Wisdom if the campaign often asks characters to notice threats, interpret motives, or manage wilderness situations. Perception, Insight, and Survival are common ways those situations can translate into checks. Wisdom also supports Medicine, Animal Handling, and the other associated skills if they suit your character.

This is a campaign-based recommendation, not a universal rule: a game focused on urban intrigue or exploration may create different opportunities than one centered on magical research.
When should a Sorcerer favor Intelligence?
Favor Intelligence if the character’s role involves researching magic, recognizing arcane details, analyzing evidence, or recalling history, religion, and nature lore. Arcana and Investigation are especially relevant to a Sorcerer interested in magical knowledge or solving mysteries.

Intelligence becomes more valuable when the DM regularly makes those checks meaningful. A character who is curious, scholarly, or trained in relevant skills may also benefit from it for roleplaying reasons, even if the campaign does not emphasize lore every session.
How to choose between them
- Prioritize Charisma for ordinary Sorcerer spellcasting. Neither Wisdom nor Intelligence replaces it in the standard class rules covered here.
- Consider your campaign. If play emphasizes awareness, insight, and wilderness tasks, lean toward Wisdom. If it emphasizes lore, clues, and research, lean toward Intelligence.
- Check your skill proficiencies. Proficiency can make a score more useful for the checks your Sorcerer is equipped to attempt; choose skills that support the character and campaign.
- Use character concept as a tie-breaker. A perceptive survivor and a methodical researcher can both be effective Sorcerers; the secondary score helps express the difference.
There is no rules-based universal winner between Wisdom and Intelligence. The rules identify what each ability governs, while the campaign determines which checks arise often enough to make one more useful for your character.

What changes in the 2024 rules?
The core answer stays the same: the 2024 Sorcerer uses Charisma for Sorcerer spells. The revised class also includes Innate Sorcery, which increases the Sorcerer’s spell save DC by 1 while the feature is active. That is a class feature, not a reason to replace Charisma with Wisdom or Intelligence. Keep edition-specific features separate when using a character built under the 2014 rules.
Multiclassing and table-specific rules
If you multiclass, use an unusual feature, or play with a house rule that changes an ability used for spellcasting, check the specific feature and your table’s rules. The standard Sorcerer guidance does not by itself resolve every interaction involving another class or a custom rule.
