WorldEdit works in both single-player and multiplayer, but for multiplayer it is usually installed on the server. Players do not normally need WorldEdit installed on their own clients; an optional client-side mod adds selection outlines. WorldEdit’s documented installations are for Minecraft Java Edition, and the build must match your Minecraft version and platform.
Where WorldEdit is installed
WorldEdit is available for local single-player games and dedicated servers. The installation location depends on how you play and which game software you use. The WorldEdit 7.4 installation guide covers Java Edition setups.
Single-player
Install WorldEdit as a mod in the modded game instance you use to launch Minecraft. The documented local options include NeoForge and Fabric; place the compatible WorldEdit jar in that instance’s mods folder.
Multiplayer server
Install WorldEdit on the server, using the folder and build for its software:
#1 Best Overall
- Paper, Spigot, or Bukkit: put the WorldEdit plugin jar in the server’s
pluginsfolder. - NeoForge, Fabric, or Sponge: put the compatible mod jar in the server’s
modsfolder.
Use a build that matches both the Minecraft version and the server platform. Choose a route that fits the server software already in use: Paper/Spigot plugins are mostly incompatible with mods for NeoForge, Fabric, and Sponge, according to the installation guide.
Do players need WorldEdit on their clients?
Not for the server’s WorldEdit editing capability in the normal server-side setup. The administrator installs WorldEdit on the server, and players’ ability to run commands depends on the server’s permissions. Installing WorldEdit on every player’s client is not a general requirement.
Optional selection outlines
WorldEdit CUI is a separate, third-party client-side mod that displays selection outlines. It is optional and does not replace the server installation. The official selection guide also documents a limited server-side //drawsel option; see WorldEdit’s selection documentation for details.
Permissions and edition limits
Having WorldEdit installed does not automatically give every player permission to use it. The WorldEdit quick start says only operators can use WorldEdit on NeoForge/Fabric servers by default; Bukkit and Sponge setups require appropriate permissions.
