Its defining gameplay advantage is a 1.2× damage bonus against Altmer, Bosmer, Dunmer, and Falmer. That makes it especially appealing against those enemies—not a proven winner in every fight or for every build.
What makes Wuuthrad special?
Wuuthrad is an ancient battleaxe tied to Ysgramor and the Companions. Its documented special effect is 1.2× damage against four playable races: Altmer, Bosmer, Dunmer, and Falmer. The Elder Scrolls Fandom weapon reference describes the effect, and a 2017 Steam Community guide to unique weapons also reports it: Elder Scrolls Fandom’s Wuuthrad reference and the Steam Community unique-weapons guide.
The bonus is race-specific. It gives Wuuthrad a clear niche against those targets, but the cited references do not demonstrate that it outperforms other axes against enemies outside that group.
Does the damage bonus make it the best axe?
Not by itself. “Best” depends on the fight and the character using the weapon. A meaningful comparison with another two-handed axe would need to account for ordinary and improved damage, attack speed, reach, enchantments, perk interactions, the player’s build, and whether the target is one of the four races affected by Wuuthrad’s bonus. The available references do not establish a complete comparison across those factors, so a universal ranking would go beyond the evidence.

Why does Wuuthrad matter to the Companions’ story?
Beyond its combat effect, Wuuthrad is an important Companions relic associated with Ysgramor. It appears during the quest “Glory of the Dead,” where it opens a passage in Ysgramor’s Tomb. The UESP reference records Skjor’s in-game line, “Wuuthrad is a relic of Ysgramor.” That is fictional dialogue, not a real-world expert assessment. See UESP’s Skjor dialogue reference.

How should you decide whether to use it?
- Choose Wuuthrad for its matchup: its documented bonus makes it attractive against Altmer, Bosmer, Dunmer, and Falmer.
- Compare your alternatives for other fights: weigh the factors that affect your build and encounter rather than assuming the race bonus applies universally.
- Value the story as well as the stats: its connection to Ysgramor and the Companions gives it significance that a damage ranking alone cannot capture.
