Yes, Xbox’s backward-compatibility effort has expanded, but not in the way many console players may mean. On July 22, 2026, Xbox launched four original Xbox games on Windows PC in early release. Xbox has also promised anniversary-year ways to play classic games, but its announcements do not confirm a new batch of original Xbox or Xbox 360 titles for the existing console backward-compatibility catalog.
What Xbox has actually brought back
The clearest new release is Backward Compatibility on PC, which Xbox launched in early release on July 22, 2026. The first wave consists of four original Xbox games:

- Conker: Live and Reloaded
- Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
- Fuzion Frenzy
Xbox said the four games were available to buy for PC and included with all Xbox Game Pass plans at launch. The company described the release as the start of a broader effort to bring classic Xbox games to PC over time—not as an announcement of new console-compatible titles.

Where you can play the four PC games
Xbox lists supported Windows PCs and handhelds, including the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. A handheld is optional: any qualifying Windows PC can work. Xbox’s listed minimum requirements are:

Xbox’s announcement labels its driver-version information “Latest Version as of January 2026”; that note should not be taken as a fresh October 2026 driver check. The company also lists PC-oriented options such as resolution upscaling up to 4x, VSync, fullscreen and windowed modes, anisotropic filtering, enhanced anti-aliasing, and configurable language and audio settings, while saying the original gameplay is preserved.
Does this mean new Xbox console backward-compatible games are coming?
That has not been confirmed in the announcements covered here. On March 11, 2026, Xbox VP of Next Generation Jason Ronald said the company was committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable and would roll out “new ways to play some of the most iconic games from our past” as part of Xbox’s 25th-anniversary year. His statement did not name games, specify a reopening of the existing console catalog, or give a date for those anniversary experiences. Xbox’s GDC statement is a broad commitment, not a list of new console additions.

As of the official announcements available on October 8, 2026, Xbox had confirmed new PC access and other anniversary activity, but had not announced a new list of original Xbox or Xbox 360 games for the existing console backward-compatibility catalog. That does not rule out future additions; their scope and timing simply remain unannounced.
How the anniversary collections and disc feature differ
Game Pass collections
In August, Xbox announced curated Game Pass collections featuring games from original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, playable on console and/or PC. Examples named by Xbox include Fable Anniversary, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Fallout 4, and Psychonauts 2. The announcement did not provide a complete collection list. These collections are anniversary programming across generations, not evidence on their own that more games have been added to the console backward-compatibility catalog. Disc-to-digital
Xbox separately said Insiders could begin testing a disc-to-digital feature on August 31, following its August 26 announcement. With a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc inserted, a player can claim a digital entitlement by launching the game. Xbox said most Xbox One and Series X disc-based games support the feature, with thousands of titles at the start and more to be added. This is about supported disc-based games; it does not reopen the original Xbox or Xbox 360 console compatibility list. Details are in Xbox’s disc-to-digital announcement.

The confirmed PC launch shows one concrete way Xbox is making older games available on a new platform. For a console-catalog update, look for an announcement that names original Xbox or Xbox 360 games as additions to the existing Xbox console backward-compatibility list. Xbox’s anniversary promise leaves room for more ways to play, but does not establish that particular change.
