Has the Xbox handheld launched?
Yes: the ASUS-made ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Xbox-branded handheld gaming PCs. Xbox announced their availability on October 16, 2025, across 45 countries, with more markets to follow. That is a partner-led expansion of the Xbox ecosystem, not confirmation of a handheld manufactured by Microsoft. Xbox’s launch announcement describes the release and its initial geography.
The distinction matters because the branding and Xbox software do not change what the hardware is: ASUS makes the devices, which run Windows 11. The available official announcements establish the Ally launch, but not sales figures, market success, or independent performance results.
What is the difference between ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X?
Xbox’s June 2025 announcement lists the following manufacturer specifications. They are not independent benchmark results; the figures do not establish comparative frame rates, battery life, thermals, or comfort.

Both models share the listed screen size and refresh rate, while the X has the higher-tier listed processor, more memory and storage, and a different USB configuration. Which one makes sense depends on your local price, the games you want to play, and whether the extra memory, storage, and port options matter to you. Check the current listing in your region; the cited Xbox announcements do not establish a universal current price.

Can you play Xbox games on the ROG Xbox Ally?
Yes, but “play Xbox games” can mean several different things. The Ally is a Windows gaming PC, so not every Xbox console game runs locally on it. Xbox describes three ways to access games, with availability depending on the title, service, region, and network.
Install and play compatible PC games
The devices run Windows 11 and open into an Xbox full-screen experience designed for handheld use. The Xbox app can bring installed games from Xbox and other PC storefronts into one library. Locally installed PC games must still be compatible with the hardware and controls; an Xbox console license does not automatically mean a game can be installed on Windows.

Stream selected games from the cloud
Cloud gaming lets you stream supported titles rather than install and run them locally. Xbox says it requires an eligible Game Pass subscription and a supported device; some cloud-playable titles may be sold separately. The available catalogue and supported regions vary. Xbox’s handheld gaming page describes these conditions.
Remote Play from your own console
Remote Play streams games from your Xbox console over a network to the handheld. It is different from cloud gaming: the game runs on your console, not on a Microsoft cloud server. Your console, network, and game setup therefore matter.
Carry progress with supported Play Anywhere games
Xbox Play Anywhere supports cross-device play, with progress and achievements carrying across Xbox console, PC, and Ally for eligible titles. Catalogue counts are snapshots, not guarantees about any specific game: Xbox reported over 1,000 supported Play Anywhere games in June 2025, then over 1,500 in its March 2026 update. Check whether the individual game is included before assuming a purchase or saved progress carries over. Xbox’s June 2025 announcement and its March 2026 update give those dated counts.

Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility Program gives game-level guidance rather than promising the same experience for every title. “Handheld Optimized” indicates Xbox considers a game ready with default controller inputs, an intuitive text-input method, legible text, and suitable full-screen resolution. “Mostly Compatible” means it may need minor in-game setting changes. Xbox also provides a Windows Performance Fit indicator.

- Look up the specific game’s handheld compatibility and performance information.
- Check whether you plan to install it, stream it from the cloud, or use Remote Play; each route has different requirements.
- For cloud play, verify that your region, device, subscription, and desired title are supported.
- For cross-device saves, verify that the title supports Play Anywhere rather than assuming all Xbox games do.

Will Project Helix be a handheld?
Xbox’s March 11, 2026 announcement identifies Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console, co-designed with AMD and intended to play Xbox console and PC games. It does not identify Helix as a handheld or provide a consumer release date, price, or final specifications. Xbox said it planned to ship alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027; that is a developer milestone, not a retail launch date. Read Xbox’s Project Helix update.
The announcement also describes a goal of a more consistent cross-device experience. That software ambition does not confirm a separate portable console. Xbox reported over 1,500 Play Anywhere games in the same March 2026 update, but catalogue growth likewise does not establish a new device’s form factor or release timing.
What a potential Microsoft handheld launch would—and would not—mean
A first-party Xbox handheld remains unannounced in the cited official materials. The confirmed present-day development is that Xbox has brought its services and software experience to ASUS handheld hardware, while its announced first-party hardware roadmap centers on Project Helix. Treat claims about a separate Microsoft handheld, its specifications, or a launch window as speculation unless Xbox formally confirms them.
