The studio closures behind the headline
The report followed closures that included Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin, as well as the absorption of another subsidiary. It said Tango had been pitching a sequel to Hi-Fi Rush, citing unnamed sources. At a ZeniMax town hall, Xbox president Matt Booty praised Hi-Fi Rush, but the report said he did not explain specifically why Tango was closed.

What Xbox announced in 2026
The May 2024 story is not a current update. In July 2026, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced approximately 3,200 role reductions across FY27, including approximately 1,600 immediate eliminations, and transitions of four studios to new management. Sharma described the restructuring as a response to the state of the business, saying, “Our business today is not healthy.” These are Xbox’s announced figures and rationale, not independent findings. Microsoft separately said it was eliminating around 4,800 roles company-wide, about 2.1% of its global workforce, with much of the impact in its Commercial and Xbox organizations. Xbox’s stated business rationale
In explaining its July changes, Xbox said its margins were “3-10x lower” than those of comparable platform and publishing businesses and that, in a typical year, it invested 64 cents for every dollar. September update: further cuts and studio status
On September 22, 2026, Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty announced 268 additional role eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. Xbox said the action brought completed work to roughly three-quarters of the restructuring announced in July. The September figures describe the company’s update at that time. The same update distinguished studio changes that were already taking effect from proposed closures still under consultation. Xbox described reporting-line changes and studio transitions, while saying Ninja Theory employees would enter consultation on a proposed closure as the company explored other paths. Arkane consultation was still underway and expected to continue through year-end. Booty wrote, “We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.” Consultation is not the same as a completed closure, and the September update did not establish the final outcome for either studio. What the 2024 report said about Game Pass
The report also placed the studio changes in the context of subscription growth. Mat Piscatella, Circana’s executive director of analysis, said U.S. non-mobile video-game subscription spending had been flat to low single-digit growth since mid-2021. He described Game Pass spending as having experienced its main growth period from late 2019 through early 2021 before settling. How to read the headlines
- The 2024 severance claim was reported, not confirmed by Xbox. It came from unnamed sources, and Xbox declined to comment at the time.
- The 2026 cuts were later company announcements. Xbox’s FY27 plan and Microsoft’s company-wide figure have different scopes; keep them separate.
