NVIDIA’s GeForce hotfix 551.46, released on February 7, 2024, targeted intermittent game micro-stutter with V-Sync enabled, browser-scrolling stutter on certain configurations, Red Dead Redemption 2 stutter on some Advanced Optimus notebooks, and extended-play stability problems in Immortals of Aveum. It is now a historical release: the regular GeForce Game Ready 551.52 WHQL driver, released February 13, 2024, carried the same relevant fixes. In 2026, use a current supported driver for your exact GPU and Windows version rather than hunting for 551.46.
What NVIDIA GeForce 551.46 was
551.46 was an out-of-band GeForce display-driver hotfix, not a universal performance upgrade. NVIDIA used it to deliver a small set of urgent or narrowly scoped corrections before the normal driver cycle. Contemporary coverage reported that it had to be downloaded and installed manually rather than through GeForce Experience. See the original report at HotHardware.
The package was associated with Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 GeForce systems. Its successor, GeForce Game Ready 551.52 WHQL, was released on February 13, 2024; its release notes preserved the relevant fixes. NVIDIA’s subsequent 551.61 release on February 22 shows that the ordinary driver channel had already moved on.
Which problems did the hotfix target?
| Symptom | Scope NVIDIA identified |
|---|---|
| Game micro-stutter | Intermittent stuttering on some systems when vertical synchronization (V-Sync) was enabled |
| Browser scrolling | Potential stutter while scrolling in web browsers on certain configurations |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Stutter on some notebooks using Advanced Optimus |
| Immortals of Aveum | Stability problems during extended gameplay |
These are specific release-note conditions, not a promise to fix every hitch, browser, game, or PC.

What “micro-stutter” feels like
Micro-stutter is uneven frame delivery. An FPS counter can show a respectable average while individual frames arrive at irregular intervals, producing brief hitches or motion that feels less smooth than the number suggests. A frame-time graph or performance overlay can reveal spikes that an average FPS display hides.
It is different from low average FPS, internet latency, shader-compilation stutter, a CPU or VRAM limit, thermal throttling, or a monitor running at an unsuitable refresh rate. V-Sync can reduce tearing, but its frame-pacing and latency behavior depend on the game, frame rate, display and synchronization method. Disabling it may hide one symptom while bringing back tearing; it is not a universal cure.
Why a display driver could affect web scrolling
Browsers use the GPU for page compositing, animation, video decoding and scrolling. A driver defect can therefore affect desktop composition or browser rendering as well as games. That connection does not prove NVIDIA caused every case of choppy scrolling: browser-engine bugs, extensions, scripts, video decoding, Windows graphics scheduling, HDR and multi-monitor configurations can all contribute.

Who was most likely to benefit?
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 GeForce users with V-Sync enabled who saw intermittent game hitching.
- Advanced Optimus laptop owners seeing Red Dead Redemption 2 stutter.
- Players experiencing Immortals of Aveum instability after long sessions.
- Users whose browser scrolling became choppy after a driver or system change, provided the problem matched the affected configuration.
The 551.52 page lists broad support for RTX 40-, RTX 30-, RTX 20-, GTX 16-, GTX 10-, GTX 900-, GTX 700-series and TITAN products, but always select the exact GPU and operating system. Open NVIDIA’s official selector at nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx.
Should you install 551.46 today?
Usually no. For a current system, install the latest supported NVIDIA driver for the exact GPU and Windows edition. If you are deliberately investigating a regression, a known-stable earlier driver can be appropriate after checking release notes and the game’s support guidance. Treat 551.46 as a historical reference or controlled rollback candidate, not the default 2026 download.

The regular 551.52 WHQL package is the important historical successor because it included the V-Sync, browser-scrolling, Advanced Optimus and Immortals of Aveum fixes. Its details remain available at NVIDIA’s 551.52 driver page. Notebook manufacturers may provide certified packages for particular laptop implementations, so check the computer maker’s support page when an OEM driver is required; NVIDIA’s notebook-driver information is at this NVIDIA page.
How to troubleshoot stutter now
1. Classify the symptom
Decide whether you have game frame-time hitching, browser jank, both, network delay, display flicker or crashes. Use a frame-time graph or NVIDIA performance overlay; an FPS average alone cannot establish a driver problem.

Help→System Information. - Windows: open Device Manager → Display adapters → your NVIDIA GPU → Properties → Driver.
3. Install the correct current package
In NVIDIA’s selector, choose the product type, series, exact GPU model and Windows edition. Game Ready is the normal starting branch for gaming; Studio is aimed at creator workflows and is not an automatic stutter fix.

4. Use a clean installation when justified
Choose Custom/Advanced installation and its clean-install option when changing branches, recovering from a bad update or testing corrupted settings. It resets NVIDIA profiles, so record custom per-game settings first.
5. Reboot and reproduce the same test
Use the same game scene, V-Sync state, browser page, monitor refresh rate and power mode. Change one variable at a time so an improvement or regression is meaningful.

- Try Windows Device Manager’s Roll Back Driver option, if available.
- Install a known-stable earlier package from NVIDIA’s official source.
- Use Display Driver Uninstaller only when ordinary removal or rollback fails and a thorough reset is warranted.
- Create a restore point or another recovery route before experimentation.
- Re-enable altered settings one at a time.
Do not treat unofficial driver mirrors as equivalent to NVIDIA’s download service.

If browser scrolling remains choppy
- Compare another browser.
- Test a private or clean window with extensions disabled.
- Toggle browser hardware acceleration, then restart the browser.
- Repeat with video playback stopped and check whether only one site is affected.
- Test one monitor or a common refresh rate, especially with multiple high-refresh displays.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, test rollback or reinstall.
Persistent jank after these checks points toward the browser, website, extension, video path, Windows composition or display setup rather than automatically proving a GPU-driver fault.
If games still stutter
- Allow for shader compilation and asset streaming, especially after a game update.
- Check CPU thread saturation, VRAM use, temperatures and power limits.
- Disable background recording and overlays temporarily.
- Verify the laptop’s GPU mode and Advanced Optimus behavior; confirm the game uses the intended GPU.
- Test frame-rate caps, G-SYNC/VRR, Reflex and in-game V-Sync as one complete configuration rather than random combinations.
- Check game patches, launchers, Windows power settings and manufacturer firmware or drivers.
A driver update will not automatically fix a CPU bottleneck, insufficient RAM or VRAM, thermal throttling, shader stutter, a game’s frame-pacing bug, recording conflicts, internet latency or an incorrectly configured monitor.
Quick decision guide
- Current driver and a matching listed symptom: update through NVIDIA, then repeat a controlled test.
- An old system showing the original 2024 issue: use a later regular driver containing the fix, not necessarily 551.46.
- Only one website is affected: isolate the browser and site before changing drivers.
- The problem began after a new driver: consider rollback to a known-stable NVIDIA package.
- A notebook is involved: check the OEM driver and Advanced Optimus configuration.
Bottom line
GeForce 551.46 was a narrowly targeted February 2024 hotfix for V-Sync-related game micro-stutter, certain browser-scrolling cases, Advanced Optimus Red Dead Redemption 2 stutter and Immortals of Aveum stability. Its fixes moved into 551.52 WHQL, so current users should start with NVIDIA’s supported driver selector, validate the result with repeatable tests, and investigate browser, hardware, game and display causes when the symptom does not match NVIDIA’s specific conditions.
