ISO Recording vs. Cloud Recording: What’s the Difference?

Zoom computer recording saves files locally; cloud recording stores them in Zoom. ISO usually means routing isolated participant feeds for production.

For Zoom meetings, computer recording saves files to your computer; cloud recording stores them in Zoom and makes them available through the web portal after processing. “ISO recording” is different: it generally means isolating individual audio or video feeds for production. Zoom cloud settings can create separate participant audio files and selected video layouts, but that is not the same as a separate video file for every participant.

The terms are not universal across platforms. This comparison uses Zoom’s documented computer and cloud recording features, plus ZoomISO as an example of a specialized production workflow.

What the terms mean

Computer (local) recording

Zoom calls this “computer recording.” It saves recording files to the computer’s hard disk, normally in a Zoom folder in Documents. You manage those files on that computer. Zoom lists MP4 video, M4A audio and chat text among the standard outputs. Zoom Support’s recording overview describes the local and cloud destinations.

Cloud recording

Zoom stores the meeting’s video, audio and chat text in its cloud. After processing, recordings appear in the Recording area of the Zoom web portal, where they can be viewed, managed, shared or downloaded. The key difference from computer recording is where the files are stored and how they are accessed—not whether the recording is “ISO.”

ISO recording

In production, “ISO” commonly refers to isolated sources or feeds. In the ZoomISO v3 workflow, individual participant feeds can be assigned to separate production outputs. That is a routing workflow for production, not simply a setting that stores a conventional meeting recording in cloud storage. The precise meaning and setup depend on the ISO tool being used. Liminal’s ZoomISO v3 documentation describes its capture modes, permissions and output routing.

How the options compare

Question Zoom computer recording Zoom cloud recording ZoomISO-style production workflow
Where does media go? To the computer’s hard disk. To Zoom’s cloud, then the Zoom web portal. Participant feeds are routed to production outputs; this is not an ordinary cloud archive.
How is it accessed? Manage the files on the computer that recorded them. View, manage, share or download them through the portal after processing. Use the production workflow and outputs configured for the show.
What can it produce? Standard MP4 video, M4A audio and chat text. Depending on settings, selected video layouts, audio-only files and chat text. Separate outputs for individual participant feeds.
What should decide your choice? You want recording files saved directly on this computer. You need hosted recording with portal access, sharing or download. You need isolated participant feeds for post-production or live production.

Can Zoom cloud recording save separate tracks?

Yes, when the relevant options are selected. Zoom can record active-speaker, gallery and shared-screen layouts separately. It can also create one audio file for all participants, a separate audio file for each participant, or both. Zoom’s settings documentation says separate participant audio files can be provided for up to 200 speakers; phone participants’ audio is combined into one file. These are configurable options, not guaranteed defaults. See Zoom’s cloud recording settings.

Separate audio files and separate selected video layouts are useful for editing, but they do not amount to a separate isolated video recording for every participant. If that is the production requirement, confirm that the chosen ISO tool captures and routes the individual feeds you need.

What to check before choosing Zoom cloud recording

  • Account eligibility: Zoom documents cloud recording for a licensed user on an eligible Pro, Business or Enterprise account, with cloud recording enabled. Check the account’s current settings before relying on it.
  • Who can start: Only the host and co-host can start a cloud recording.
  • Settings: Select the layouts, audio files and other desired recording options before the meeting; separate tracks are not automatic defaults.
  • Processing time: The recording must process after it stops before it can be viewed. Zoom says processing generally takes about twice the recorded duration and can occasionally take up to 24 hours during higher processing loads.
  • Documented limitations: Zoom cloud recording does not capture nonverbal feedback or meeting reactions, cannot be embedded on websites, and has a 150-file limit per live session across generated layouts and related files.

These requirements and behaviors are described in Zoom Support’s cloud recording instructions. Confirm current account eligibility and settings in Zoom before an important session.

Which should you use?

  • Choose computer recording when the priority is saving files directly to the recording computer.
  • Choose cloud recording when eligible hosted storage and access through Zoom’s portal, including sharing or downloading, suit your workflow.
  • Look into an ISO-capable production workflow when an editor or live production needs individual participant feeds routed separately. Check the specific tool’s capture permissions, notifications and outputs; do not assume a cloud-recording option provides this.
