Yes, you can spawn items in Stardew Valley—but the best method depends on your platform. On PC and mobile, the simplest unmodded exploit is putting item codes in square brackets inside a character, animal, or child’s name. On PC, the more reliable and flexible method is to install SMAPI and use list_items and player_add. The bracket-name exploit is not documented as a universal feature for Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, or other console editions.
Stardew Valley 1.6 also changed how item IDs should be understood. Old numeric codes may still work in some situations, but qualified IDs such as (O)163 are safer when a current lookup provides them. Always verify an ID against your game version and back up your save before experimenting with unusual or modded items.

Quick answer: the two ways to spawn items
| Method | Works on | What you need | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bracket-name exploit | PC and mobile, according to current Stardew Valley documentation | A character, animal, or child name containing item codes in square brackets | Quickly obtaining a few known items without installing mods |
| SMAPI console commands | PC with SMAPI installed | SMAPI and its console window | Searching current IDs, adding many items, using quality values, and working with mod-added items |
These are not the same thing. The bracket method is a name-field exploit triggered when the game displays that name in dialogue. SMAPI commands are a modding tool used through the SMAPI console; they are not commands for ordinary in-game chat.

Method 1: use item codes in a character name
When you create a new character, enter one or more item codes inside square brackets as the character’s name. When an NPC later mentions that name in dialogue, Stardew Valley adds the corresponding items to your inventory.

For example, this name contains three codes:
[645][499][(O)163]
The documented example produces an Iridium Sprinkler, Ancient Seeds, and a Legend. Each bracketed code represents a separate item. You can combine several codes in one name, but the name field is not an unlimited command line: long IDs, many items, or text-input limits can make this approach impractical.
How to use the name exploit
- Start a new character on a supported PC or mobile edition.
- Enter the item codes in the character’s name field, including the opening and closing square brackets.
- Begin the game and wait for an NPC to say or display the character’s name in dialogue.
- Check your inventory for the spawned items.
The same general exploit can be used with animal and child names, although it only helps when the game actually displays that name in a dialogue or other text trigger. It is not a guaranteed instant-delivery button.
Important formatting rules
- Use square brackets:
[645], not645. - Do not add spaces inside a code unless the current lookup specifically includes them.
- Copy the complete qualified ID when one is available, such as
[(O)163]. - Do not assume a long string ID will fit or behave well in a character-name field.
Useful documented examples
| Item | Example code | Item type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iridium Sprinkler | [645] |
Object | Legacy-style numeric example; verify it against the current game version. |
| Ancient Seeds | [499] |
Object | Legacy-style numeric example; use a current lookup before relying on it. |
| Legend | [(O)163] |
Object/fish | The qualified form identifies the item as an object and avoids some ambiguity. |
This is a set of documented examples, not a guaranteed complete item-code list. A full list is only useful when it states the Stardew Valley version and the ID format it uses. Old lists copied from pre-1.6 data can be incomplete, ambiguous, or simply wrong.

Method 2: spawn items with SMAPI commands on PC
For repeatable item spawning, SMAPI is the better current option on PC. Install SMAPI, launch Stardew Valley through it, and use the SMAPI console window. The console can search the item database—including items supplied by installed mods—and then add the result to your inventory.
These commands belong in the SMAPI console. They do not work in ordinary Stardew Valley chat.
1. Search for the item
Use list_items with a search term:
list_items iridium
The command searches the available item data and helps you find the current ID or item name. This is safer than blindly copying a number from an old cheat sheet, especially after a game update or when mods add content.
2. Add an item by ID
The documented syntax is:
player_add <I:item ID> [I:count] [I:quality]
The count and quality arguments are optional. A qualified ID can be supplied when the lookup gives one. For example, the object form of the Legend ID is:

player_add (O)163
Use the exact syntax and quoting required by the ID returned in your console. If an ID contains characters that the console treats specially, adding the item by name may be easier.
3. Add an item by name
You can also search by the item’s displayed name:
player_add name "Galaxy Sword"
For a stack of ten items at iridium quality, the documented pattern is:
player_add name "Stir Fry" 10 4
For applicable items, the quality values are:
0— normal quality1— silver quality2— gold quality4— iridium quality
Not every item uses quality in a meaningful way. A weapon, furniture item, or other non-quality item may ignore the quality argument or behave differently from a crop, fish, or artisan product.

Optional: create an item on the ground
SMAPI’s documented console commands also include createDebris for spawning an item on the ground rather than directly adding it to your inventory. Use the current SMAPI command documentation for that command’s exact argument format, particularly if you are working with a mod-added item.
Why Stardew Valley 1.6 makes old item lists unreliable
Many older guides describe items using a numeric ParentSheetIndex. That value is not a universal item identifier. Different items can share a sprite index, and the same number may not uniquely identify the object you intend to spawn.
Stardew Valley 1.6 introduced unique string IDs and changed the way item data is represented. An unqualified numeric ID such as 128 does not necessarily carry enough information to identify an item uniquely. When an unqualified ID is used, the game resolves it by checking item types in a defined order. If multiple item types share a number, the result can depend on that resolution order.

A qualified ID includes the item category as well as the identifier. For example:
(O)128
The (O) prefix identifies an object. Other item categories have their own qualified formats. Rather than manually converting an old number, copy the complete ID from a current in-game or SMAPI lookup whenever possible.
What can happen with an old or invalid code?
A code that worked before 1.6 may now produce a different item, fail to resolve, or require a qualified form. Recent versions handle missing item data more safely than older versions: invalid IDs are generally ignored instead of reliably producing a useful item, and missing-item placeholders can appear when data is unavailable.
That safer handling does not make experimentation risk-free. The 1.6 update history includes fixes involving missing item data, invalid spawned items, crashes, and item persistence. Back up your save before spawning unusual objects, experimental content, or anything provided by a mod.
How to look up current item IDs
The most dependable lookup is the game’s own item database through SMAPI:
- Launch the game with SMAPI.
- Open the SMAPI console.
- Run
list_items, optionally followed by a search term. - Copy the returned item name and ID exactly.
- Use
player_addwith the ID or the quoted item name.
A community-maintained Stardew Valley 1.6 ID database can be convenient for browsing, but treat it as a secondary reference. Community lists can become stale, include modded items, or show IDs that are valid only in a particular context. In-game lookup, current Stardew Valley documentation, and the documentation for the specific mod should take priority.
Platform support: where the cheat works
PC
PC players have both options. The bracket-name exploit is the simplest unmodded route. SMAPI is the better choice when you need exact, repeatable control or want to search items rather than memorize codes.

Mobile
The current Stardew Valley documentation labels the bracket-name item-spawn exploit as PC/mobile. Mobile players should still account for version differences and text-input behavior. The SMAPI console workflow described above is a PC workflow and should not be presented as a standard mobile feature.
Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and other consoles
Do not assume the bracket-name exploit works on consoles. Console editions have received later Stardew Valley updates, including 1.6 content, but the available platform documentation does not establish that this name exploit is supported across every console release.

“I typed the number but nothing happened.”
The name exploit requires square brackets. Try [645], not 645, and make sure an NPC actually displays the name in dialogue.
“The code worked in an old guide but gives the wrong item.”
The number may be ambiguous or based on an old ParentSheetIndex table. Search with list_items and use the current qualified ID where available.
“I entered a SMAPI command in chat.”
SMAPI commands must be entered in the SMAPI console after launching the game with SMAPI. They are not ordinary in-game chat commands.
“The item is missing or appears as an error item.”
The ID may be invalid, the item may belong to a missing mod, or the list may not match your version. Check the item with list_items, confirm that the required mod is installed, and avoid removing a content mod while its items remain in your save.

“I want to spawn a modded item.”
Use SMAPI rather than the name field whenever possible. Modded items may have long string IDs or names that do not fit comfortably in a character name. Keep the mod installed while the item is present, and make a backup first.
“The item exists, but the name method is too cumbersome.”
That is a limitation of the exploit, not proof that the item code is invalid. Long IDs, multiple item types, and text-field limits make the bracket method unsuitable for some items. Use SMAPI’s item search and player_add on PC.
Before you spawn anything: a safe-use checklist
- Confirm your platform: PC/mobile support does not imply console support.
- Confirm your Stardew Valley version, especially if using a pre-1.6 code list.
- Prefer a qualified ID such as
(O)163when the current lookup provides one. - Use
list_itemsinstead of trusting an unversioned numeric table. - Back up the save before spawning rare, experimental, furniture, or modded items.
- Do not remove a mod that defines items already stored in your inventory, chests, machines, or world.
- Remember that spawning items can bypass progression and change the way you want to play.
Optional offline reference
If you prefer a physical reference while playing, the fifth edition of the official Stardew Valley Guidebook is a relevant companion. Fangamer describes it as a hardcover player’s guide and art book with a database covering items, tools, crops, animals, mines, and other systems, updated for Stardew Valley 1.6.8. It can be useful for browsing without a second screen, but printed information can lag behind later patches and it is not a replacement for list_items when you need the exact ID used by your current installation.

Can you spawn items in Stardew Valley without mods?
On PC and mobile, the documented bracket-name exploit can add items when an NPC displays a character, animal, or child’s name in dialogue. It is not an official cheat menu and is not documented as universally supported on consoles.
What is the best way to spawn items in Stardew Valley 1.6?
On PC, use SMAPI’s list_items to find the current item and player_add to add it. This is more precise than relying on an old numeric list. PC and mobile players can also use the bracket-name exploit for a small number of known items.
What does the (O) mean in a Stardew Valley item ID?
The (O) qualifier identifies an object. A qualified ID combines the item type with its identifier, reducing ambiguity when an unqualified number could refer to more than one item category.
Do Stardew Valley item codes work on Nintendo Switch or PlayStation?
Do not assume they do. The current documentation labels the bracket-name exploit PC/mobile only, and SMAPI console commands are a PC workflow. Console players should rely on ordinary gameplay or current, platform-specific documentation.
The Bottom Line
For a quick, unmodded experiment on PC or mobile, put a current item code in square brackets in a name and trigger the relevant dialogue. For reliable item searching and repeatable spawning on PC, install SMAPI and use list_items followed by player_add. In Stardew Valley 1.6, prefer qualified IDs, distrust unversioned legacy lists, and back up your save before spawning unusual or mod-dependent items.
