iTunes Is Waiting for Windows Update: Fix the iPhone Driver Error

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If iTunes says “iTunes is waiting for Windows Update to install the driver for this iPhone,” Windows has not yet installed or loaded the Apple driver that iTunes needs to communicate with the connected iPhone or iPad. Start with Windows Update, then update iTunes through the installation route you used. If the device is still missing, inspect Device Manager and manually install usbaapl64.inf from Apple Mobile Device Support. A different USB port or cable is a useful final isolation check, but the documented problem is primarily a Windows-update or driver-state issue.

What the message means

The warning is a driver-dependency message, not a statement that the iPhone itself needs a firmware update. iTunes is waiting for Windows to provide the Apple mobile-device driver required for the USB connection. Until that driver is installed, loaded, or repaired, iTunes may not show the iPhone or iPad at all.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The exact wording reported by affected users is: “iTunes is waiting for Windows Update to install the driver for this iPhone. You may need to use the Windows Settings app to check for updates.” Reports from Microsoft Q&A dated October 9, 2018, and November 2, 2019, describe the message appearing after an iTunes update and leaving an iPhone or iPad unrecognized. Those reports do not establish one specific Windows build or one universal iTunes version as the cause.

Windows packaging and driver behavior can change, so the labels you see may differ slightly from the examples below. The sequence remains useful because it moves from the least invasive fix to the manual driver fallback.

Use this order of fixes

  1. Check Windows Settings for pending updates, install them, and restart when Windows requests it.
  2. Update iTunes using Apple Software Update if you installed the traditional desktop build, or through the Microsoft Store if you installed the Store build.
  3. Restart Windows, reconnect the iPhone, and inspect Device Manager for an Apple device entry.
  4. If the driver is still unavailable, install usbaapl64.inf manually from Apple Mobile Device Support.
  5. Try another USB port or cable only after the software and driver checks.

Do not skip the restart steps. A downloaded update can remain inactive until Windows or iTunes is restarted, and a driver that is present on disk may not be loaded into the current session until the connection is re-established.

Step 1: Run Windows Update first

Open the current Windows update screen

Open Settings and go to the Windows Update section. On current Windows releases this is normally found under Windows Update in the Settings navigation; the exact placement and wording can change between releases. Select the control that checks for updates.

Install every update Windows offers that can be installed immediately. If Windows displays a restart request, choose the restart option and allow the process to finish before opening iTunes. A pending restart is important: Windows may have downloaded the driver components but not activated them yet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reconnect only after the restart

After Windows has restarted, leave the iPhone disconnected until the desktop is ready. Then connect it and open iTunes. This gives Windows a clean opportunity to enumerate the phone and attach the newly installed Apple driver instead of reusing the failed connection state.

If Windows Update reports that you are current

A “you’re up to date” result does not prove that the Apple driver is correctly loaded. Continue with the iTunes update step and then check Device Manager. The error can persist when the operating-system update state is current but the iTunes installation or Apple Mobile Device Support driver is outdated or not registered correctly.

Step 2: Update iTunes through the correct installation route

There are two practical iTunes update routes on Windows. Use the route that matches how iTunes was originally installed; updating through the other route may not modify the installation you are actually using.

iTunes installation Where to update What to do afterward
Traditional desktop installer Open Apple Software Update and install the available iTunes update. Restart iTunes. Restart Windows as well if the installer requests it or if the driver remains unavailable.
Microsoft Store installation Open the Microsoft Store, open its app-update area, and install the available iTunes update. Close and reopen iTunes, then restart Windows before reconnecting the iPhone if the warning continues.

The distinction matters because Store packaging and the desktop installer manage application components differently. The troubleshooting sources identify both routes but do not claim that one route universally causes the warning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm that the update completed

Do not assume that clicking an update button means the installation finished. Wait for the updater or Store to report completion, close any updater window, and launch iTunes again. If the warning returns immediately, close iTunes before proceeding to Device Manager so that Windows can refresh the connection without iTunes repeatedly trying to open it.

Step 3: Reconnect and inspect Device Manager

Reset the connection

  1. Close iTunes.
  2. Disconnect the iPhone or iPad from USB.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. After the desktop is available, reconnect the device.
  5. Open iTunes and check whether the device appears.

If iTunes still cannot see the device, open Device Manager and inspect the device categories for an Apple-related entry. Depending on the Windows release and driver state, the entry may be named Apple iPhone, Apple Mobile Device, or another closely related Apple mobile-device label. The available evidence does not support one exact label for every Windows version.

Interpret what you find

  • An Apple entry is present and the phone appears in iTunes: the driver is functioning; the original warning was cleared by the update and reconnection.
  • An Apple entry is present but the phone is not recognized: the driver may exist but be inactive or incorrectly installed. Continue to the manual-install step.
  • No Apple-related entry appears: Windows has not exposed the expected mobile-device driver. Continue to the manual-install step and then reconnect again.

The goal of Device Manager at this stage is diagnosis, not a search for a universal label. A missing or unusable Apple entry tells you to focus on Apple Mobile Device Support rather than repeatedly opening and closing iTunes.

Step 4: Install the Apple driver manually

When Windows Update and the iTunes update do not restore recognition, the documented fallback is to install the driver file directly from the Apple Mobile Device Support folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the driver folder

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to %ProgramFiles%Common FilesAppleMobile Device SupportDrivers.
  3. Locate the file named usbaapl64.inf.
  4. Right-click usbaapl64.inf and choose Install.

The %ProgramFiles% variable points Windows to its Program Files directory, so using the variable avoids guessing the drive letter or typing the full directory manually. The filename is significant: choose usbaapl64.inf, not a similarly named file, when that is the file provided in the folder.

Finish the driver refresh

  1. After the installation command completes, disconnect the iPhone.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Reconnect the iPhone after the desktop has loaded.
  4. Open iTunes and check for the device.

This sequence gives Windows a fresh device-enumeration event after the driver installation. If you reconnect before restarting, the existing failed device state can remain in place and make it appear that the manual installation did nothing.

If the file is not there

The documented path depends on Apple Mobile Device Support being installed. If the folder or usbaapl64.inf is absent, the iTunes installation may not contain the expected support components. Return to the correct iTunes update route in Step 2 and verify that the update completed, then check the path again. The available guidance does not establish a different universal path for every Windows edition, so do not substitute an arbitrary driver file from an unverified download.

Step 5: Isolate the USB connection

Once Windows and iTunes are current and the driver has been checked, try a different USB port and, if available, a different cable. WindowsReport includes this check as a secondary troubleshooting measure. It is useful for separating a connection problem from a driver problem, but the evidence behind this particular warning is centered on Windows update and driver state.

Use the test as an isolation step

  • If another port immediately allows Windows to show the Apple device, the original port may not have provided a stable connection.
  • If another cable works while the original does not, the original cable or its connection may be the limiting factor.
  • If every port and cable produces the same driver warning, return to the software path rather than repeatedly swapping accessories.

A port or cable test cannot install a missing driver. It only helps determine whether a physical connection variable is masking the software result.

Which route applies to your symptoms?

What you observe Most useful next action Why
The warning appears immediately after a Windows update or restart request. Complete Windows Update and restart. The message explicitly identifies a Windows driver dependency, and a pending restart can prevent the driver from loading.
The warning appeared after updating iTunes. Update iTunes through Apple Software Update or the Microsoft Store, matching the installation route. The reported cases include the warning after an iTunes update, and the two Windows packaging routes update differently.
Windows is current, but Device Manager has no usable Apple entry. Install usbaapl64.inf from the Apple Mobile Device Support Drivers folder. The manual installation directly addresses a missing or unregistered Apple mobile-device driver.
The Apple entry exists, but iTunes still does not show the phone. Restart, reconnect, and then try another USB port or cable. This checks whether the driver is loaded and whether the connection itself is stable.
You cannot find the driver folder or file. Verify which iTunes package is installed and complete its update route before checking again. The supplied guidance documents the path only when Apple Mobile Device Support is present.

Common mistakes that prolong the error

Updating the wrong iTunes package

Installing an update from the Microsoft Store does not necessarily update a separate desktop installation, and Apple Software Update is not the same route as the Store updater. Identify the iTunes copy you launch, then use its matching updater.

Opening iTunes before Windows finishes restarting

Launching iTunes while Windows still has a restart-required update can reproduce the same warning. Complete the restart first, reconnect the phone afterward, and only then open iTunes.

Treating a cable swap as the primary repair

A different cable can help isolate a connection fault, but it does not resolve a missing Apple driver. Use it after Windows Update, the iTunes update, Device Manager, and the manual driver path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Searching for one guaranteed Device Manager name

Windows versions can present the Apple device under different labels. Look for an Apple iPhone or Apple Mobile Device entry rather than assuming that one exact wording must appear.

Downloading an unrelated driver utility

The documented fix uses Windows Update, iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Support, Device Manager, and usbaapl64.inf. A generic driver-updater utility is not part of the supported sequence and can make it harder to identify which component changed.

What is known about versions and timing?

The exact error wording is documented in Microsoft Q&A reports dated October 9, 2018, and November 2, 2019. A related Apple Ethernet-driver case was dated May 24, 2025, while third-party troubleshooting guides were updated or crawled between 2023 and 2025. These dates show that the wording and driver dependency have been reported over time; they do not prove that every current Windows release or iTunes build behaves identically.

Because Windows Settings labels, Microsoft Store packaging, driver paths, and restart behavior can change, use the current update interfaces on your PC. Preserve the manual path as a fallback, but do not assume that an older screenshot or a particular Windows build is universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final verification checklist

  • Windows Update was checked and all applicable updates were installed.
  • Windows was restarted when requested.
  • iTunes was updated through the route that matches its installation: Apple Software Update or Microsoft Store.
  • The iPhone was disconnected during the restart and reconnected afterward.
  • Device Manager was checked for an Apple iPhone or Apple Mobile Device entry.
  • usbaapl64.inf was installed from %ProgramFiles%Common FilesAppleMobile Device SupportDrivers if the warning persisted.
  • A different USB port or cable was tried only as a secondary isolation check.

If the iPhone appears in iTunes after these steps, the Windows driver dependency has been resolved. If it remains absent, the evidence available for this message does not identify one universal Windows or iTunes version to blame; record which step failed, whether the Apple entry appears in Device Manager, and whether the driver file exists. Those observations distinguish an update-state problem from a missing support component or a connection-specific fault.
