When iTunes fails on Windows, the cause is usually one of five things: an outdated or unsupported installation, a Microsoft Store problem, a blocked or conflicting security program, a USB connection that cannot carry data, or a stopped Apple Mobile Device Service. Start by identifying whether the failure is installation, launching, updating, or device recognition; then follow the matching steps below. Apple’s Windows apps have also changed: Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Devices now handle functions that were historically grouped in iTunes, while iTunes remains available for supported Windows scenarios.
First identify what “not working” means
The fastest fix depends on the symptom. Do not troubleshoot an iPhone connection if iTunes cannot install, and do not reinstall an app when the real problem is a locked phone or a charging-only cable.

| Symptom | Most likely area | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| iTunes will not install or update | Windows updates, administrator rights, Microsoft Store delivery, or security software | Use an administrator account, update Windows, then retry the latest supported Store version |
| iTunes opens but an iPhone or iPad is missing | Cable, USB port, lock state, trust prompt, software conflict, or outdated operating systems | Unlock the device, leave the Home Screen visible, accept the trust prompt, and test a known data cable and another port |
| iTunes reports that Apple Mobile Device Service is not started | The Windows service is stopped or failed to start | Restart Apple Mobile Device Service in Windows Services |
| Microsoft Store cannot download or update iTunes | Store registration, package installation, or blocked firewall/proxy endpoints | Follow Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting checks rather than treating it as an iTunes device problem |
Understand Apple’s current Windows app split
Apple no longer puts every Windows function in one application. On its current Windows download guidance, Apple directs users to separate apps: Apple Music for music, Apple TV for video, and Apple Devices for managing supported iPhone and iPad tasks. iTunes is retained for supported uses that have not moved to those apps.
This matters when you search for a fix. If your goal is device management, check whether Apple Devices is the intended app before trying to repair iTunes. If your goal is music or television content, use the corresponding Apple app. Installing an older desktop iTunes package simply because its name is familiar can leave you with the wrong tool.

Fix installation and update failures
Installation and update errors generally require a clean set of prerequisites rather than a single setting. Work through these steps in order.
- Use an administrator account. Sign in to Windows with an account that can install software. If Windows asks for administrator approval, provide it. A standard account can allow browsing but still block package installation or service registration.
- Install pending Windows updates. Open Windows Settings, go to Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when prompted. Retry the iTunes installation only after Windows has completed its restart cycle.
- Choose the latest supported build. Use Apple’s current Windows download guidance and select the Microsoft Store version when it is offered for your system. Do not assume that an old installer found elsewhere is compatible with your current Windows release.
- Temporarily address security-software conflicts. Antivirus, endpoint protection, application control, and firewall products can block Store packages or the background components used by Apple software. Check their quarantine, blocked-app, and network-event logs. If your organization manages the computer, ask its administrator before changing protection; do not leave protection disabled after testing.
- Restart Windows and retry. A restart can complete a pending update, release a locked installer process, and register a service that did not start during the first attempt.
If the Microsoft Store itself reports that it cannot download or update the package, Microsoft—not Apple—is the appropriate first support path for the Store delivery failure. Continue with the Store checks in the next section.

When the Microsoft Store will not download or update iTunes
A Store error can occur before iTunes is ever installed, so device troubleshooting will not help. Microsoft’s checklist covers several separate conditions:
- Verify that Microsoft Store is registered correctly in Windows.
- Confirm that the Store launches normally and can download updates for other apps.
- Check whether package installation is working, rather than failing for every application.
- Ensure that required firewall or proxy endpoints are not blocked. Corporate filtering can prevent the Store from reaching its package and licensing services.
After correcting a Store condition, restart Windows and try the iTunes package again. If other Store apps also fail, document the Store error code and use Microsoft’s Store support process. Repeatedly downloading unrelated iTunes installers can create multiple installation paths without fixing the underlying Store problem.

Get an iPhone or iPad to appear in Windows
When the application opens but the device is absent, begin with the physical connection and the device’s security state. Apple’s computer-recognition guidance specifically requires a cable that supports both data and charging; a charging-only cable can power the phone while making synchronization impossible.
- Open Apple Devices if device management has moved to that app for your Windows setup. If your supported task still requires iTunes, open iTunes instead.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad directly to the computer with a USB cable that supports data transfer and charging. Connector compatibility still matters: a cable must fit the device and the computer, or use an appropriate adapter that supports data.
- Unlock the iPhone or iPad and leave the Home Screen visible. A locked device may not complete the handshake needed for recognition.
- When
Trust This Computer?appears on the device, choose Trust and enter the device passcode. Without this approval, Windows software may see power but not a usable device. - Wait a few seconds for the device to appear in the app’s sidebar. If it does not, disconnect and reconnect once, then continue with the hardware and software checks below.
Test the cable and USB path
Try another data-and-charging cable, another USB port, and, if available, another computer. A different result isolates the fault: if the device appears with another cable, the original cable is unsuitable or damaged; if it appears on another computer, investigate the first computer’s USB, drivers, security software, or app installation. Do not use “it charges” as proof that the cable can synchronize.

Check lock, trust, and prompts again
Keep the device unlocked while testing. If you previously declined the trust prompt, reconnecting may not immediately present it again; watch the device screen for a new prompt and approve it only on a computer you control. A trust decision is a security permission, not merely a display setting.

Update both operating systems
Install available Windows updates and update iOS or iPadOS on the device. Apple’s recognition guidance treats an outdated computer or device operating system as a possible cause, especially when a newer device is connected to an older Windows environment.

If iTunes says that Apple Mobile Device Service is not started, Apple’s documented remedy is to restart that Windows service. Apple describes this service as a possible cause when an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is not recognised in iTunes on Windows.
- Close iTunes and disconnect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Apple Mobile Device Service and open its properties.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- Select Stop, wait for the service to stop, then select Start.
- Select OK, restart Windows, and reopen iTunes.
- Reconnect the unlocked device with a data-and-charging cable and accept the trust prompt if it appears.
If the service stops again immediately, note whether another program or security policy is blocking it. An administrator-managed computer may prevent service changes, in which case the organization’s IT administrator must make the change.

Choose the right installation path
| Installation situation | Advantages | What can go wrong | Best response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store iTunes installation | Delivered and updated through Windows’ Store mechanism | Store registration, package, proxy, or endpoint failures can block delivery | Repair the Store path and involve Microsoft for Store download/update errors |
| Existing desktop iTunes installation | May remain necessary for a supported legacy scenario | An old build may not match current Windows or connected-device requirements | Confirm that the build is still supported and use Apple’s current Windows guidance |
| Apple Devices installation for device management | Matches Apple’s current separation of iPhone and iPad functions | Using iTunes out of habit can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction | Open Apple Devices, connect, unlock, trust, and test the USB path |
A practical decision tree
- Cannot install or update anything from Microsoft Store: check Store registration, Store downloads, package installation, and firewall or proxy access; then use Microsoft support.
- Only iTunes installation fails: confirm administrator rights, Windows updates, the supported build, security-software blocks, and a completed restart.
- App opens but the device is missing: use Apple Devices when appropriate, unlock the device, accept trust, and test a data-and-charging cable and another USB port.
- AMDS is reported as stopped: restart the service through
services.msc, set it to Automatic, restart Windows, and reconnect. - Nothing changes after all hardware checks: test another computer to separate a device or cable fault from a Windows installation or policy fault.
What not to assume
- A charging indicator does not prove that a cable supports synchronization.
- An iTunes window opening does not prove that Apple’s current device-management app is iTunes.
- Installing the same package repeatedly does not repair a blocked Microsoft Store.
- A missing device is not automatically a defective phone; lock state, trust approval, USB selection, service state, and security software can all produce the same symptom.
- There is no authoritative success-rate or failure-rate statistic in Apple or Microsoft’s guidance, so a claimed percentage would not be meaningful evidence for your individual setup.
When to escalate
Escalate to Microsoft when the Microsoft Store cannot register, download, update, or install packages, or when required Store network endpoints are blocked. Escalate to your organization’s administrator when you cannot change services, security policies, firewall rules, or proxy settings. If a known-good data cable, another USB port, an unlocked trusted device, current Windows and iOS or iPadOS, and another computer still produce no connection, the remaining fault may require Apple or hardware support rather than another iTunes reinstall.
