Jagex Apologizes and Re-evaluates RuneScape Reignited Plan

Jagex says it is re-evaluating RuneScape Reignited after existing players felt sidelined. The original plan proposed a fresh character type, not a wipe of Veteran accounts.

Jagex has apologized to existing RuneScape players who felt sidelined by Reignited and says it is re-evaluating the proposal. The company has not announced that Reignited is canceled, and its apology did not finalize replacement rules. The original plan described a fresh character type—not a wipe of existing Veteran accounts—with separate progression and an economy that could limit interaction between the two character types.

What is RuneScape Reignited?

Reignited was announced as a new, permanent character type in RuneScape, the game often called RS3 in media coverage. It is not Old School RuneScape, which is a separate game. Under the original proposal, Reignited characters would begin with fresh progression and separate hiscores and economy, while existing characters would continue as Veterans. Players could keep playing a Veteran or create a separate Reignited character; Jagex did not announce that existing accounts would be reset. Jagex’s October 3 announcement presented Reignited alongside the Adventure Guide and the next step in remastering the early journey, with a proposed launch date of December 2, 2026. These were announced plans, not confirmed terms after Jagex began re-evaluating the idea.

Jagex framed the fresh start as a way to give new players a shared entry point and invite back players who felt lost or left behind. It also said a new economy could let players experience RuneScape without the advantages and maturity of a 25-year economy. At RuneFest 2026, creative director Ryan Philpott described the plan as an “opportunity to relaunch RuneScape.” In an interview, he said: “We believe – going as far as to say we know – this is the right time to relaunch RuneScape in this way [and] show everyone how great a game RuneScape is again, after ripping out some of those egregious features.” PC Gamer’s RuneFest interview with Philpott gives the context for that statement.

Why did Jagex apologize?

In its community post, “Reignited: Where We Go From Here,” Jagex acknowledged that existing players felt the company was no longer focused on them. The community team wrote: “Let’s not mince words here. We have made you, as existing players, feel like you are no longer our focus. That’s entirely on us and of our own making, and it’s only right we open by saying sorry.” Jagex added: “We missed our mark on making Veterans a clearer part of this idea. Not just in the execution, but how we revere your accomplishments, champion your legacy and ensure you benefit from every player who comes through the door.” The post said feedback had far exceeded Jagex’s initial expectations, but gave no numeric figure for reach, demand, or likely player-count effects.

RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg
  • Grab your capes and party hats, because we’re going to Gielinor!
  • Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.

Jagex reported hearing several related concerns from players. These are concerns the company said it received, not established predictions of what would happen:

  • Veterans could feel less important, or that their progress and accomplishments were not valued.
  • Veteran worlds might lose population if players moved to Reignited, while the overall community could become fragmented.
  • Restrictions between character types could make shared play feel limited; some players also worried Veteran-locked items and cosmetics would feel cut off.
  • Players might feel pressured to restart to keep up with friends or experience the new start.
  • A separate membership requirement for Reignited was unwelcome to players who did not want to pay separately for another character type.

Independent coverage also described the proposal as raising concerns about starting over and fragmenting the player community. GamesRadar’s coverage and PC Gamer’s reporting provide independent context; neither turns those worries into measured outcomes.

How did the original Veteran and Reignited rules compare?

The following table describes the October 3 proposal only. Jagex’s later apology said the company was reviewing the plan, so these should not be treated as finalized or necessarily current rules.

Feature Veteran characters in original proposal Reignited characters in original proposal
Progression and hiscores Existing progression continued. Fresh progression with separate hiscores.
Economy and trading Veteran economy; no trading with Reignited characters. Separate fresh economy; no trading with Veterans.
Grand Exchange Could not access Reignited characters’ Grand Exchanges. Could not access Veterans’ Grand Exchanges.
Worlds and social play Could share worlds with Reignited characters; chat, clans, and homesteads together were allowed. Could share worlds with Veterans; chat, clans, and homesteads together were allowed. Additional Reignited-only worlds were also proposed.
Boss instances Could not share boss instances with Reignited characters. Could not share boss instances with Veterans.
Membership The October 3 announcement did not establish a changed Veteran membership arrangement. The proposal included free members’ access for the first ten days; Jagex later said it was considering changes to the separate-membership requirement.

Will Reignited split the RuneScape player base?

The original design could have divided some play between distinct progression tracks and economies, even though it allowed shared worlds and social features. In particular, the proposed limits on trading, Grand Exchange access, and boss instances meant that social contact would not make the two character types interchangeable. Whether that would have reduced Veteran populations or fragmented the community is not established: Jagex described those outcomes as player concerns, and the available coverage does not provide verified player-count evidence to quantify them.

Jagex said it was exploring a “heavy set of revisions” and considering how Veteran progress could remain intact and be represented, how to prevent a hard community split from persisting, and whether to change the separate-membership requirement. It did not say which revisions it would adopt.

Do I need a separate membership for Reignited?

The original proposal included free members’ access for Reignited characters during their first ten days and was criticized for a separate-membership requirement. In the apology, Jagex said it was considering possibilities for changing that requirement, but did not publish a replacement membership policy. The ten-day offer and separate-membership terms therefore describe the original announcement, not a finalized policy after the review began.

Did Jagex cancel Reignited?

No cancellation was announced in “Reignited: Where We Go From Here.” Jagex said it was re-evaluating the proposal, that every option remained on the table, and that it would put proposals before players by the end of that week. The cited post did not provide those replacement rules. Because that promised update could change the status, check RuneScape’s official news and community channels for the latest announcement before relying on the original terms.
