Jagex removed a RuneScape trailer for the upcoming Dragon Slayer II quest after viewers pointed to apparent generative-AI imagery, including a character with six fingers. The studio apologized and said its trusted external partner had explicitly confirmed that GenAI would not be used. Jagex did not name the partner, and its public statement did not disclose the outcome of its investigation.
What happened to the Dragon Slayer II trailer?
The trailer was shown at RuneFest. Viewers quickly questioned details in the imagery, including a six-fingered hand and oddly rendered footwear, which they considered signs of generative AI. Jagex moderator Alec “Mod Sween” Sween addressed the concerns in an official community post on October 4, 2026.
Sween said Jagex had taken the trailer down while it investigated urgently, and apologized for the six-finger detail: “there’s a sixth finger and, well, that’s pretty hard to explain away.” The studio has not published investigation findings or said when a replacement trailer will appear.
What did Jagex say about the partner and its AI policy?
Jagex said an unnamed trusted external partner produced the trailer and had explicitly confirmed GenAI would not be used. That is Jagex’s account; the public statement does not identify the partner or explain how the imagery was made.

Sween restated the studio’s position: “we don’t use GenAI to create our games, artwork or creative assets, and will not knowingly allow it to be used on our behalf.” Jagex said the incident exposed a problem in its own oversight: it was the second recent occasion on which concerns about generative AI had arisen through partners it trusted. The studio announced an overhaul of its review processes and said it would work with and commission community creators to tell the Dragon Slayer II story. It did not describe specific controls or say that the overhaul was complete.
How does this relate to the 100 Thieves dispute?
Jagex’s reference to a second recent partner-related concern points to a separate AI-related dispute over its clothing collaboration with 100 Thieves, reported days before the trailer controversy. The two episodes should not be conflated: the available statements do not establish that they involved the same partner or production workflow.
