The company apologized and said it had opened an urgent investigation, while stressing that an external partner had explicitly assured it GenAI would not be used. Why was the Dragon Slayer II trailer taken down?
Viewers questioned the trailer after noticing apparent visual irregularities, including a hand with six fingers. Jagex acknowledged that detail in its statement and said it was “pretty hard to explain away.” The company said it had taken the trailer down while it investigated urgently.
The controversy concerns the Dragon Slayer II quest trailer for RuneScape 3, not every RuneScape announcement or trailer shown around RuneFest.
What Jagex said about generative AI
In a statement posted by the RuneScape account on October 4, 2026, Jagex said the trailer had been produced by a trusted external partner who had explicitly confirmed that GenAI would not be used. The statement did not name the partner.

Jagex also stated: “Our position is clear at Jagex: we don’t use GenAI to create our games, artwork or creative assets, and will not knowingly allow it to be used on our behalf.” The company apologized for the trailer and said this was the second recent occasion when concerns about GenAI had arisen through trusted partners, exposing a weakness in its own processes.
What happens next?
Jagex said it would overhaul its review processes immediately following RuneFest and commission community creators to tell the Dragon Slayer II story to the standard it expects. It has not described the new review controls or announced when replacement creative will appear.
