Daily active users across five Resident Evil games reportedly rose 50% around the September 18, 2026 opening of Zach Cregger’s film—but that figure measures players, not a 50% increase in game sales. Discounts began before the movie opened, making it difficult to separate the film’s effect on purchases from lower prices. Analysts see the broader opportunity as renewed visibility for the franchise, rather than a proven long-term sales gain.
What the reported 50% increase measures
GamesIndustry.biz, in a report reproduced by GameDev.net, attributed the cross-game activity figures to Sensor Tower. Daily active users (DAU) across five Resident Evil titles reportedly rose from 500,000 on August 30 to 750,000 by September 20, 2026. DAU counts people active on a given day; it is not a count of copies sold or a measure of how many new owners the film brought to the series.

The same report said daily unit sales climbed from 34,000 to nearly 80,000. That movement happened in a period when games were also discounted, so it cannot be read as a film-only sales effect.
Discount timing complicates the sales picture
TheGeek.games, reporting Alinea Analytics estimates, said discounts began on September 10—eight days before the film’s September 18 opening. Alinea estimated that after accounting for discount effects, the film-period sales lift on PlayStation 5 was an additional 50–65% for the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes, compared with 11–14% on Steam. These are attributed estimates, not audited sales figures; the difference between platforms also cautions against treating one percentage as a universal result.

Another figure in the GamesIndustry.biz report, also reproduced by GameDev.net, was a 72% average uplift versus late-summer baselines across 37 markets, attributed to Newzoo. It is a separate reported measure and baseline, not confirmation that the film caused a 72% increase in sales.

These are Alinea estimates as reported by TheGeek.games, rather than independently verified counts. The Resident Evil 2 remake had the largest percentage rise among the four games listed, while Resident Evil 4 had the largest reported DAU total after the increase.
Why analysts emphasize brand building
Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis is quoted in the GamesIndustry.biz report reproduced by GameDev.net as saying: “The benefit … isn’t the short-term increase in game sales. It’s IP and brand building.” The ellipsis appears in the reproduced quotation, so it should not be read as an uninterrupted sentence. The point is an analyst’s view of the franchise’s longer-term potential, not a measured outcome established by the short-term activity figures.

A film can put a game series back in front of people who have not played recently, prompt existing fans to return, or make a familiar setting newly relevant. The reported DAU rise is consistent with renewed attention, but the available figures do not establish how much of that attention will persist or convert into lasting sales.
Which Resident Evil game best matches the film?
For someone who wants a direct setting connection, Resident Evil 2 remake is the clearest starting point named in the reporting: it shares Raccoon City as a setting with the film. That makes it a straightforward thematic choice, though it does not mean the game retells the movie’s story.

Before choosing, compare the game’s setting and story connection with your preferred platform, the current store price, and whether you want an older entry or a newer release. The cited coverage discusses discounts and platform-specific sales estimates but does not establish current prices or availability, so check the relevant storefront for today’s listing.

The published figures come through reports attributing estimates to Sensor Tower, Alinea Analytics, and Newzoo. Their underlying datasets and methodologies are not established in the cited coverage here, so the numbers should be treated as reported analytics, not independently verified totals. The evidence supports a clear short-term conclusion: Resident Evil activity rose around the film’s release. It does not isolate the film as the sole cause of sales growth, nor does it prove a lasting commercial effect.
