What kind of game is Jagged Alliance 3?
Developed by Haemimont Games and published by THQ Nordic, Jagged Alliance 3 is a turn-based tactical RPG set in Grand Chien. The president has gone missing, the paramilitary Legion has seized control, and you recruit mercenaries to fight across a campaign shaped by tactical battles and strategic decisions. It launched on PC via Steam on July 14, 2023. Steam’s store page lists single-player and online co-op.

Combat revolves around action points, cover, weapons, equipment, and mercenary abilities. PC Gamer reviewer Dominic Tarason describes its bullets as physical projectiles and explains that spending action points to aim narrows the aiming cone. Between battles, the strategic map has you explore, take territory, train militia, heal and repair your squad, craft, modify weapons, and manage mines that generate income. The tactical encounters are only one part of the challenge: delay and poor resource decisions can make the wider campaign harder.
Jagged Alliance 3 worth playing?
For players who like tactical RPGs with consequential planning, yes. The appeal is the combination of granular turn-based combat, mercenaries with distinct personalities and abilities, and a strategic layer that gives battles a larger purpose. PC Gamer’s Tarason praised the modernization of the series’ tactical systems and the way the combat remains readable despite its detail. Metacritic’s critic archive also includes positive excerpts from outlets such as RPG Fan, Impulse Gamer, and IGN, alongside criticism.

That recommendation is less certain if you want a smooth, low-pressure strategy game. Tarason found the campaign challenging even on Normal and noted how resource pressure can contribute to a downward spiral. The interface and inventory screens drew criticism for feeling cumbersome, and animations can look stiff. Metacritic’s excerpts also show that reception is not uniform: one Games Machine excerpt criticizes enemy AI, while IGN’s excerpt describes a mixed response to the humor. The over-the-top mercenary tone is part of the game’s identity, but may not suit every player.
What do reviews and player ratings say?
PC Gamer’s Dominic Tarason scored the game 81/100 in a review published July 13, 2023. His verdict was: “There’s a few bolts that could be tightened up here and there, but Jagged Alliance is back in business.” That is one critic’s assessment, not a guarantee that the game’s difficulty, humor, or interface will work for you.

Storefront ratings offer a separate, time-sensitive view. At the October 8, 2026 access snapshot, Steam showed 87% positive from 5,409 English-language reviews overall, labeled “Very Positive,” and 66% positive from 221 recent reviews, labeled “Mixed.” These are user review indicators from different time windows, not critic scores; the recent figure can change as new reviews arrive. The US PlayStation Store showed 4.3/5 from 1,113 ratings at the same snapshot. That PlayStation listing rating should not be combined with Steam’s review percentages.
Does Jagged Alliance 3 have co-op, and which platforms support it?
The game is documented for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. Steam lists online co-op, and the US PlayStation Store listing specifies optional online play for up to two players. THQ Nordic’s November 2023 console announcement described multiplayer as cross-generation within PlayStation and Xbox families. These listings establish supported modes and platforms, but do not establish matchmaking quality, current server health, or which version performs best.

For console buyers, the US PlayStation Store listing also describes a four-hour full-game trial for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. Trial eligibility and store offers can change, so check the listing for current terms. The official Jagged Alliance 3 website lists a Standard Edition and a Tactical Box edition, with links to Steam and GameStop.de for the Standard Edition and THQ Nordic’s European store for the Tactical Box. That confirms an official physical-edition path, not current stock, Amazon availability, or global shipping.

- Not established by these reviews: A performance advantage for PC or any console, the current quality of online co-op, or whether a particular platform’s controls are more comfortable.
Should you buy Jagged Alliance 3?
Choose it for the tactical combat and connected campaign systems, rather than expecting a frictionless strategy game. The evidence supports a strong recommendation for genre fans willing to plan carefully and tolerate some interface rough edges. If you are unsure about the difficulty or tone, use a platform’s available trial or demo where eligible before buying.
