Mihawk OS is described in current reporting as a planned expansion of PS5 Proton, a homebrew project aiming for a Windows 11-style environment and Windows game compatibility. A public Mihawk OS release, release date, and detailed compatibility list have not been established. Separately, the prospero-win project has public experimental builds for running selected Windows games locally on homebrew-enabled PS5 consoles. These are distinct projects, and prospero-win’s features and installation requirements should not be attributed to Mihawk OS.
What is Mihawk OS?
Mihawk OS is the reported name for a possible Windows 11-style environment being developed as an expansion of PS5 Proton, or PP. The reported goals include running 32-bit and 64-bit Windows games through Proton, with a Linux compatibility layer planned for later. Current reporting describes PP as a demo; it does not establish that Mihawk OS is publicly available or provide a release date. The project is not a Microsoft product.

That status matters: talk of a Windows-style environment is a development direction, not evidence that a PS5 can now act as a general-purpose Windows gaming PC. Public details about Mihawk OS’s requirements, tested games, performance, and installation are not established in the available reporting.

No—not through the projects discussed here. They concern consoles capable of running homebrew, not ordinary PS5s on stock retail firmware. Even on a homebrew-enabled console, Windows game compatibility depends on the individual game and the software runtime; it does not mean Steam’s full library will work.

A separate project, prospero-win, documents experimental local Windows game support on homebrew-enabled PS5 consoles. It is not Mihawk OS, and its public builds do not establish that Mihawk OS has been released.
What prospero-win documents today
The prospero-win README describes a Windows compatibility runtime for native PS5 homebrew. Its documented approach combines several components:

- CPU: x86-64-AMD Ryzen Zen 8 Cores / 16 Threads at 3.5GHz.GPU: AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics engine.
- 16GB GDDR6/256-bit Memory; 825GB SSD Storage Capacity
- Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T), IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, Bluetooth 5.1
- HDR technology, 8K output, 4K TV gaming, Up to 120 fps with 120Hz output, Tempest 3D AudioTech
- What's Included: Sony PlayStation 5 Disc Version; Wireless controller; USB cable, HDMI cable, AC power cord. Nogtox PVT HDMI_cable
- Windows application code: 64-bit Windows applications run on the console’s x86-64 CPU through Wine. A custom x86 translator handles 32-bit code.
- Graphics: Direct3D 8–11 is translated through DXVK to Vulkan. OpenGL games use Mesa’s Zink on Vulkan.
- Controls and peripherals: The project documents DualSense controls, USB keyboard and mouse support, and custom mappings for games designed around keyboard and mouse input.
- Other features: Its documentation lists GDI, audio, a launcher, game profiles, and save synchronization.
The project explicitly calls the runtime experimental. Supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit software is not a promise that every modern Windows game will run. Its README also says it does not bypass DRM or anti-cheat, load kernel drivers, or include games.

Prospero-win’s project-listed playable examples include Half-Life 2, Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition, Half-Life, Counter-Strike 1.6, OpenArena, Warcraft III, Space Cadet Pinball, and Wine Minesweeper. These examples show that some selected titles can run; they do not establish broad compatibility with current PC games.

- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
What setup does prospero-win require?
The project’s documented setup requirements apply to prospero-win, not to Mihawk OS. Its documentation says users need:
- A PS5 capable of running homebrew.
- A compatible FTP server and ELF loader, plus an app loader.
- Their own copy of the game they intend to run.
- A Linux PC to install the runtime.
The prospero-win app itself does not use firmware-specific offsets, but the jailbreak, loader, and bundled helper have firmware dependencies. That distinction does not make installation firmware-independent: the required surrounding tools still have their own dependencies. Consult the project’s documentation for the applicable versions and setup details before proceeding.

What should players expect—and what should they not?
An experimental compatibility runtime for selected games is not equivalent to a ready-to-use Windows desktop or a general replacement for a gaming PC. In particular, the prospero-win README’s stated limits mean it is not a route around DRM or anti-cheat, and it does not support loading kernel drivers. A game that relies on those systems may not work even if its basic graphics and controls are otherwise compatible.
Keep the maturity levels separate when judging the news: prospero-win has public experimental builds and project-documented features, while Mihawk OS is reported as a goal connected to a demo, with no public release date established. The available reporting does not provide a complete Mihawk OS feature specification or an independently verified link between its namesake and prospero-win contributor mihawk-99, whom prospero-win credits for Wine-on-PS5 fixes and Mesa work.
