Short answer: A normal PS5 does not play PlayStation 2 discs. A jailbroken PS5 can run the unofficial PS5SX2 homebrew emulator, but you must provide a compatible jailbreak, helper and mounting tools, a BIOS dumped from your own PS2, and your own game files. Compatibility is still being developed title by title. An original PS2 remains the simpler and more predictable route for PS2 discs and accessories, provided you have working hardware and the right display connection.
Choose PS5SX2 if you already maintain a jailbroken console and want emulator features such as configurable controls and higher-resolution output, and you accept changing software requirements. Choose an original PS2 if you want native disc playback, the broadest confidence that PS2 software and peripherals will behave as designed, and a setup that does not depend on a jailbreak.

What the two options actually are
Official PS5 disc support stops before PS2
Sony’s documented PS5 behavior is unambiguous: the console supports specific PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 disc formats, but not older PlayStation software from discs. The PS5 Safety Guide for model CFI-7021 states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That is the boundary for an unmodified console. The fact that most PS4 games run on PS5 does not extend native disc support to PS2.

Installing homebrew changes the software environment; it does not turn PS5 hardware into an officially supported PS2 player. Sony’s compatibility documentation and any homebrew capability should therefore be treated as two separate things.

PS5SX2 is an unofficial PCSX2 port
PS5SX2 is a community project that runs PCSX2, the PS2 emulator, natively on a jailbroken PS5. Its project documentation says it is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Sony Interactive Entertainment or the PCSX2 team. It is not a feature delivered through the PS5 system software, PlayStation Store, or Sony support.
The project is active and describes weekly updates as development works toward full compatibility across the PS2 library. That wording matters: it is a development goal, not a claim that the whole library already works. No complete, independently verified game-by-game compatibility percentage is established here.
An original PS2 is native hardware
The alternative is a functioning PlayStation 2 console with a compatible controller, game media, and a television connection. The PS2 reads its own software format and uses the console’s original timing, input behavior, memory-card system, and accessory interfaces. Reliability still depends on the condition and model of the individual used console, but the setup does not require a PS5 jailbreak, emulator files, or a changing homebrew tool chain.
PS5SX2 versus an original PS2 at a glance
| Decision point | Jailbroken PS5 with PS5SX2 | Original PS2 console |
|---|---|---|
| Official Sony support | None; PS5SX2 is independent homebrew. | Native platform for PS2 software. |
| Core hardware | Jailbroken PS5, plus the helper and mounting components required by the current project instructions. | Working PS2 of a compatible model. |
| Game source | User-provided images in ISO, CHD, CSO, or ZSO format; the project says games are not bundled. | Original PS2 discs, with the console’s optical drive and other hardware in usable condition. |
| BIOS | A PS2 BIOS dumped from the user’s own console; not included by the project. | Built into the console. |
| Physical PS2 DVD discs | Reported as supported by PS5SX2 in an October 10, 2026 Tom’s Hardware report; this is a homebrew capability, not official PS5 support. | Native disc playback. |
| Physical PS2 CD games | The same report says PS5SX2 does not read PS2 games released on CD. | Native playback when the console and disc are functional. |
| Compatibility confidence | Variable by title; the project says full-library compatibility is still being pursued, and no complete verified matrix is supplied here. | Highest confidence for software designed for the relevant PS2 model and accessories. |
| Image options | Project documentation describes configurable controls and display options; reporting also describes scaling and filters. | Output depends on the PS2 model, cable, television, and any display processing. |
| Maintenance | Jailbreak support, payloads, mounts, emulator builds, and per-game settings can change. | Ageing console, optical drive, controllers, memory cards, and model-matched cables may need replacement. |
| Setup time or performance | No measured setup time, frame-rate benchmark, or universal performance figure is established. | No universal setup time or reliability figure applies to every used console. |
How compatibility differs in real use
Native PS2 compatibility is the baseline
With an original console, a PS2 title is running on the platform for which it was authored. That gives you the strongest expectation that disc-based assets, memory-card behavior, multitap support, light-gun requirements, and timing-sensitive software will operate as intended, assuming the console, accessories, and disc are in working order. It does not guarantee that every used PS2 is healthy: optical drives wear, controllers develop faults, and video standards vary by region and model.
Accessory matching is important. Sony’s accessory table lists controller and video-cable compatibility by PS2 model families rather than treating every SCPH revision as interchangeable. Check the model number on the console before buying a replacement cable or specialist controller.

Emulation compatibility is title-specific
An emulator translates a different console’s instructions and hardware behavior. A game may boot yet still have problems with graphics, audio, timing, menus, saves, or a particular peripheral. PS5SX2’s own README says updates are planned as work continues toward full compatibility, so a successful report for one game cannot be generalized to the entire library.
The available project material does not provide a complete current title matrix, and no supported source establishes a universal percentage. Before committing to the emulator for a particular game, check the current project issue tracker, release notes, or compatibility information linked from its live documentation, then test that title with the exact build and settings you intend to use.

DVD and CD support are different
According to the October 10, 2026 Tom’s Hardware report, PS5SX2 can read physical PS2 game DVDs, including discs from different regions as described in that report, but cannot read PS2 games released on CDs. Treat that as a dated report of a changing homebrew project, not as a promise from Sony and not as proof that every DVD title works perfectly. If your collection includes CD-based games, an original PS2 is the dependable disc route; otherwise you need a user-provided image in a format supported by the current emulator build.
Enhancements are options, not guarantees
PS5SX2 documentation describes configurable controls and display settings. Secondary reporting describes high-resolution scaling and filters. These options can make a compatible game look cleaner on a modern display, but an enhancement setting does not establish a performance guarantee for every title. Some games may need native-resolution output, a specific renderer, or per-game adjustments to avoid visual or timing problems.
What you need for PS5SX2
The project’s prerequisites are more substantial than installing an ordinary PS5 application. Prepare each item before troubleshooting a game:
Rank #3
- Power Cords & adapters included
- DualShock Controller
- DVD playback
- Digital surround sound
- A PS5 that is compatible with a currently supported jailbreak. Jailbreak availability and instructions can change, so use the live PS5SX2 documentation rather than relying on an old firmware tutorial.
- The helper payload identified by the project, loaded with
kstuff. ShadowMountPlus, used to mount the application as described by the project instructions.- A PS2 BIOS dumped from your own PS2. PS5SX2 does not bundle a BIOS.
- Your own PS2 game files. The documentation lists ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO formats and says games are not included.
- Storage for the application, BIOS, and games. The instructions describe USB locations as well as directories under
/data/PCSX2/on the console. - A PS5 controller or another input device configured through the emulator.
Whether you need a USB drive is a storage decision, not a fixed purchase requirement: the project documents USB paths, but it also documents internal console paths. Use the location supported by the current release and your available space.

Names, payload requirements, and folder paths can change with new jailbreak and emulator releases. The sequence below follows the project’s documented dependencies; verify exact commands and labels in the current README before executing them.
- Confirm the current jailbreak path. Check that your PS5 model and system software are supported by the active project instructions. Do not assume that a firmware range from an older guide remains valid.
- Load the required helper. Use the project’s documented method to load
kstuffand confirm that the payload reports success before attempting to start the emulator. - Install or copy the mounting tool. Deploy
ShadowMountPlusexactly as the current documentation specifies. PS5SX2 will not behave like a normal retail application if its mount step has not completed. - Dump and place your BIOS. Create a BIOS dump from your own PS2 and copy it to the BIOS directory documented for the release. Do not expect a first launch to work without a valid BIOS file.
- Prepare game images. Use the formats listed by the project—ISO, CHD, CSO, or ZSO—and place each file in the documented USB or
/data/PCSX2/game location. Keep the original filenames and folder structure until you have confirmed that the emulator detects the files. - Launch PS5SX2 through the project’s mount flow. Start the helper and mount process in the order shown by the live README, then open the application. A missing mount, unavailable payload, or incorrect path can look like a broken game even when the image itself is valid.
- Configure input and video conservatively. Begin with a standard control map and moderate display settings. Record changes you make so you can revert a setting when testing a second title.
- Test one title at a time. Confirm boot, menus, gameplay, audio, saves, and any required peripheral before adding enhancements. A title that reaches its opening screen has not necessarily passed every compatibility check.
- Check release notes before updating. Weekly or otherwise frequent updates may alter supported formats, paths, or per-game behavior. Keep a known-working build and configuration until the new release is confirmed for your games.
Setting up an original PS2
Identify the exact console model
Find the SCPH model number on the console label. Sony’s accessory compatibility table is organized by model families, so this number determines which controllers and video cables are appropriate. Slim and earlier designs can differ in connector behavior and accessory support.
Connect a compatible controller and display
Use a PS2-compatible controller and a video cable that matches both the console and television. Sony’s SCPH-90002CB/90003CB manual documents component-video configuration and distinguishes Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr from RGB. If you use component leads, set the PS2’s component-video output to the same signal type expected by the television; a mismatch can produce an incorrect or absent picture.
Verify the optical drive and memory-card path
Insert a known-good PS2 disc, connect a compatible memory card if the game requires saves, and check that the console reaches the game’s main menu. If the drive struggles to read discs, test another disc before concluding that the title is incompatible. A native setup can still fail because of worn hardware rather than software support.

Use the console’s original accessories when a game needs them
Some games depend on specialized controllers, multitaps, cameras, or other peripherals. Confirm that the accessory is supported by your SCPH model and that the game expects it. An emulator may offer input mapping, but that does not automatically reproduce every physical accessory’s behavior.

| If your priority is… | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Playing a shelf of original PS2 DVDs with minimal software preparation | Original PS2 | Disc playback is native and does not require a jailbreak, BIOS setup, or image management. |
| Using a PS5 you already keep jailbroken | PS5SX2, subject to title checks | You may avoid buying another console, but you must maintain the homebrew prerequisites and verify each important game. |
| Playing PS2 CD releases from physical media | Original PS2 | The October 10, 2026 report describes PS5SX2 DVD support but no PS2 CD support. |
| Higher-resolution output, filters, or flexible control mapping | PS5SX2, where the game supports it | Project documentation and reporting describe these options, with no universal performance guarantee. |
| Specialist PS2 peripherals and original timing | Original PS2 | Native hardware and model-matched accessories provide the more direct compatibility path. |
| A setup that can be maintained without changing jailbreak tools | Original PS2 | The console can age, but its basic software path is not tied to changing PS5 jailbreak support. |
| Experimenting with emulation and per-game settings | PS5SX2 | The emulator exposes configuration options, while compatibility work continues across releases. |
Maintenance and troubleshooting
PS5SX2 does not appear in the expected menu
Check the dependency chain in order: supported jailbreak, successful kstuff load, successful ShadowMountPlus mount, and the correct application location. Repeating the game-copy step will not fix a missing mount or unsupported system software.
The emulator starts but cannot find the BIOS
Confirm that the BIOS was dumped from your own PS2, that the file is intact, and that it is in the directory required by the current build. The project explicitly says the BIOS is user-supplied; there is no bundled fallback.
A game is missing from the list
Check the file extension and path. PS5SX2 documentation lists ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO and describes USB and /data/PCSX2/ locations. Move one test image to the documented location, rescan, and avoid changing several variables at once.

A physical disc does not work on PS5SX2
First determine whether it is a DVD or CD release. The dated report describes DVD support but not PS2 CD support. For a DVD, verify that your PS5SX2 build includes the reported feature and that the disc is readable; for a CD release, use an original PS2 or a supported user-provided image instead.
The original PS2 shows no picture
Check the cable type, television input, and the PS2 component-video setting. Sony’s manual documents the Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr and RGB choices; the selected output must match the television’s input. Also verify that the cable is compatible with the console’s SCPH model.
A PS2 disc fails on the original console
Try another known-good disc and inspect the console’s optical-drive behavior. If multiple discs fail, the hardware may need service or replacement. This is a condition problem, not evidence that the game belongs on an emulator.

The available documentation does not establish a universal price, setup time, or performance figure for either route. A PS5SX2 owner may already have the PS5 and storage but still needs the supported jailbreak environment, BIOS dump, helper, mount tool, and game files. An original-PS2 owner needs the console, controller, suitable cable, and any required memory card or specialty accessory; used-hardware condition determines whether replacement parts are necessary.
Because jailbreak support and PS5SX2 compatibility can change quickly, check the live project instructions immediately before setup. The project’s requirements and a dated report describe the state documented in October 2026, not a permanent specification.
Bottom line: choose by tolerance for setup versus hardware fidelity
For straightforward PS2 disc use, specialist accessories, and the highest confidence that a title behaves as it did on its original platform, use an original PS2 with model-matched accessories and the correct video configuration. For a technically inclined owner of a compatible jailbroken PS5, PS5SX2 is a useful unofficial alternative that can load supported game images, reportedly read PS2 DVDs, and offer display enhancements. It remains a moving project: PS2 CD support is not reported, full-library compatibility is still a stated goal, and every important game should be checked against the current build rather than assumed to work.
