Japanese historian Yu Hirayama says there is “no doubt” Yasuke was a samurai who served Oda Nobunaga, pointing to a stipend, a residence and a sword attributed to Nobunaga. Other historians caution that the surviving record is sparse, the manuscript evidence is uncertain, and the meaning of “samurai” was not fixed in the 1580s. Ubisoft’s decision to portray Yasuke as a samurai in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is therefore a historical-fiction choice, not a settled historical verdict.
Who said there was “no doubt” Yasuke was a samurai?
The statement is attributed to Japanese historian Yu Hirayama in a post on X, as quoted in Gamereactor’s July 22, 2024 report. Hirayama acknowledged that few historical documents survive about Yasuke, but argued that serving Nobunaga and receiving a stipend, a house and a sword supported classifying him as a samurai. The post itself was not independently available in the reporting reviewed, so the wording should be understood as Gamereactor’s report of Hirayama’s view. Gamereactor’s report
Why do historians disagree about Yasuke’s status?
The disagreement turns on three related questions: what counted as evidence of samurai status, how dependable the surviving account is, and how rigidly the label can be applied to a period when social categories were changing.
Hirayama: service and privileges point to samurai status
Hirayama’s reported argument treats Nobunaga’s alleged grant of a stipend, residence and sword, alongside service to the warlord, as markers of a master-servant relationship and samurai status. That is a reasoned interpretation of the evidence, rather than proof that all historians agree on the label.

Goza: the record is too limited for certainty
Historian Yuichi Goza told Japan Forward and The Sankei Shimbun that the limited record makes it difficult to draw conclusive conclusions about parts of Yasuke’s life. He notes that one version of the Shinchō Kōki (Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga), a 15-volume set held at the Sonkeikaku Library, mentions Nobunaga giving Yasuke a sword and residence. Goza cautions that this detail appears in that particular version among numerous manuscripts and may have entered through later transcription. Even if Yasuke was recognized as a samurai, Goza says, that recognition may have been largely symbolic. Japan Forward’s interview with Goza
Thornton: the category itself was fluid
Michael Thornton, an assistant teaching professor of history at Northeastern University who specializes in Japanese history, describes samurai as a kind of vassal with privileges such as a sword and stipend. Yasuke’s reported privileges are consistent with that status, but whether his vassalage fits the category is open to interpretation. The definition of samurai was not fixed in the 1580s, which makes a categorical answer harder to support. Northeastern University’s discussion with Thornton

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
| Question | What the cited accounts say | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Did Yasuke serve Nobunaga? | Hirayama’s reported statement describes Yasuke as serving Nobunaga. | The available accounts do not provide a complete record of Yasuke’s life or duties. |
| Was he given a sword and residence? | One version of the Shinchō Kōki mentions a sword and residence, according to Goza. | Goza says the detail appears in one manuscript version and may have been added in later transcription. |
| Does that make him a samurai? | Hirayama says the stipend, residence, sword and service support the designation; Thornton says such privileges are consistent with samurai status. | Goza allows that recognition, if granted, could have been symbolic, while Thornton emphasizes that the period’s social category was fluid. |
These accounts support describing samurai status as plausible and debated, not as a question resolved beyond dispute. Goza also warns against projecting the familiar image of a legendary sword-fighting warrior onto Yasuke. He says Jesuit records describe Yasuke as strong and as having entertainment skills, and suggests he may have served a combined bodyguard and entertainer role. Those are Goza’s assessments, not settled facts about Yasuke’s everyday duties.
What does this mean for Assassin’s Creed Shadows?
Ubisoft describes the series as fiction inspired by real events and historical figures, and calls Assassin’s Creed Shadows historical fiction rather than a factual representation of history. Its development team explicitly acknowledges the disagreement: “While Yasuke is depicted as a samurai in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, we acknowledge that this is a matter of debate and discussion.” Ubisoft’s statement on the development team’s approach

“First foreign samurai” is not a settled description. Thornton cautions that the phrase can mislead because other warrior families and groups had foreign roots. The evidence and interpretations summarized here do not establish a definitive first, so it is better to discuss Yasuke’s possible status without treating that superlative as fact.
