“The program can’t start because javaaccessbridge.dll is missing from your computer.”
javaaccessbridge.dll is a Java Access Bridge component, not a Windows system DLL. The correct repair is usually to restore the Java runtime or application that owns it, while matching the program’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches your situation:
- Only one Java program fails: Repair or reinstall that program first. It may include a private Java runtime that Windows Java cannot replace.
- The error appeared after uninstalling or updating Java: Reinstall the Java runtime required by the application.
- The program is old and specifically expects
JavaAccessBridge.dll: It may need a 32-bit Java installation and the legacy Java Access Bridge package. - The error says “Bad Image,”
0xc000007b, or “Can’t find dependent libraries”: Suspect an architecture mismatch or incomplete installation rather than a simple missing file. - Your antivirus recently quarantined a Java file: Check its quarantine history, then restore or reinstall only after verifying the application’s source.
- Several unrelated programs fail: Check Windows component integrity after repairing the owning Java installation.
- The program was copied from another computer: Reinstall it or use its launcher’s repair or file-verification function. Copied applications often retain invalid Java paths.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL or running regsvr32. Those actions often leave the underlying Java installation incomplete.

What javaaccessbridge.dll does
Java Access Bridge connects Java Accessibility APIs to Windows assistive technologies, including screen readers. A Java runtime loads the bridge through Java Native Interface, or JNI, so the DLL works as part of a Java installation rather than as an independent Windows component.
An ordinary Java application may load it when accessibility support is enabled, when the application uses an accessibility framework, or when its launcher starts Java with accessibility settings already configured. That does not mean every Java application requires the bridge.
The file is associated with Sun Microsystems JavaAccessBridge. Oracle now maintains the relevant Java Access Bridge documentation and legacy downloads. Java Access Bridge was integrated into Java SE 7 Update 6 and later, while older Java applications may depend on the separate Java Access Bridge 2.0.2 package.
The exact filename is also a useful clue. Older or 32-bit installations commonly use:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
JavaAccessBridge.dll
On 64-bit Windows, the legacy bridge layout can instead use:
JavaAccessBridge-32.dll
JavaAccessBridge-64.dll
Do not rename one of those files to create javaaccessbridge.dll. The architecture, companion files, Java libraries, and launcher configuration must agree.
Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
If only one program displays the error, treat that application as the owner until proven otherwise.
Use Windows repair
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected Java application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair option, use the application’s own installer:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Find the original installer from the application vendor.
- Run it.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or Reinstall, if offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program from its normal shortcut.
For a packaged JavaFX or business application, look inside its installation directory for a folder named runtime, jre, or similar. A private runtime means reinstalling system-wide Java may have no effect. Repair or reinstall the application instead.
Check the result
The repair worked if the application starts without the missing-file message and reaches its normal sign-in or main window. If the same error returns, note the full executable path shown by the shortcut or error details. That path helps identify which installation owns the Java runtime.
Fix 2: Reinstall the matching Java runtime
Use this fix when the application depends on system Java or when a Java update, removal, or cleanup preceded the failure.
Identify the Java installation
Open the affected program’s shortcut properties:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Check Target and Start in.
- Look for a Java executable, a
jredirectory, or a launcher configuration file.
You can also open Command Prompt and run:
where java
java -version
where java shows Java executables found through your PATH. java -version reports the runtime selected by that command. This may not be the runtime used by a bundled application, so do not assume it is the answer by itself.
Look for these common causes:
- The application is 32-bit but only 64-bit Java is installed.
- The application is 64-bit but its launcher points to an old 32-bit Java directory.
- Java was removed while the application remained installed.
- The launcher still points to a deleted Java folder.
- The application bundles Java and never uses the system installation.
Reinstall safely
- Uninstall the broken Java installation from Settings → Apps → Installed apps, if it is clearly the one the program uses.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the Java runtime from the application vendor or an official Java distribution.
- Install the architecture required by the application.
- If the application has a Java-path setting, point it to the newly installed runtime.
- Restart the application.
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit and 64-bit Java can coexist. They are not interchangeable. A 32-bit application generally needs a 32-bit Java runtime, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Do not remove every Java installation merely to simplify the list. Another application may depend on a different runtime.
Fix 3: Restore a legacy Java Access Bridge installation
This applies mainly to older software that explicitly expects the unsuffixed JavaAccessBridge.dll name.
The legacy Java Access Bridge 2.0.2 package is distributed by Oracle as accessbridge-2_0_2-fcs-bin-b06.zip. It supports Java SE 5 and later, while earlier Java SE releases require the older 2.0.1 package.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Use the official Oracle Java Access Bridge package when the application documentation specifically requires it. Do not mix files from different Java installations.
The documented legacy layout includes the following:
Legacy 32-bit layout
JavaAccessBridge.dll %JAVAHOME%bin
JAWTAccessBridge.dll %JAVAHOME%bin
WindowsAccessBridge.dll %WINDIR%System32
It also uses Java-side files including:
accessibility.properties
access-bridge.jar
jaccess.jar
64-bit Windows layout
JavaAccessBridge-32.dll 32-bit Java bin directory
JavaAccessBridge-64.dll 64-bit Java bin directory
WindowsAccessBridge-32.dll %WINDIR%SysWOW64
WindowsAccessBridge-64.dll %WINDIR%System32
Follow the package’s installation instructions rather than copying individual files. A lone DLL can still fail when its companion JAR files, properties file, bridge libraries, or Java path are missing.
After installation, enable the bridge from the matching Java runtime:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →"%JRE_HOME%binjabswitch.exe" -enable
Replace %JRE_HOME% with the actual Java runtime directory if that environment variable is not defined. For older installations, the Control Panel route is:
Control Panel → Ease of Access → Ease of Access Center → Use the computer without a display → Enable Java Access Bridge
The wording may differ on current Windows versions. If jabswitch.exe does not exist, you may be using a different Java package or a runtime that does not include that utility.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a bridge file after an update, application change, or scan.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or Java directory.
- Do not restore the file immediately if the application or installer came from an unknown source.
- Verify the program’s origin.
- If it is trusted, restore the item or reinstall the application from its official installer.
- Start a new scan.
- Launch the application again.
Do not broadly disable antivirus protection to make a missing DLL work. If a clean official reinstall is immediately quarantined again, record the detection name and contact the application vendor or your administrator.
Fix 5: Correct a copied or partially updated application
A program copied from another computer may still reference the original Java path. A failed update can produce the same result.
Try the application launcher’s own options:
- Open the program’s Start menu folder.
- Look for Repair, Verify files, Restore, or Update.
- Run the option as an administrator if the vendor recommends it.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program from its repaired shortcut.
To inspect a shortcut:
- Right-click it.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Check whether it points to a deleted Java directory or an old application folder.
- Avoid editing the target until you know which runtime the application requires.
If the program has its own runtime folder, repair that program rather than changing the Java installation shown in Windows.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM components. Java Access Bridge is loaded by the Java runtime through JNI and is not normally repaired by registering it.

regsvr32 javaaccessbridge.dll
It may produce an entry-point error, appear to succeed without fixing the Java launcher, or create confusion about which copy of the file Windows is using. Repair the owning Java application and its complete bridge installation instead.
Fix 7: Check Windows components only after Java repair
javaaccessbridge.dll is not a Windows system file, so SFC or DISM will not recreate it. These checks are useful when multiple applications have loader failures or Windows components are also behaving incorrectly.
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the matching Java application again if the DLL error remains.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command supplies a third-party Java bridge.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time, especially when the missing file belongs to a private application runtime. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the affected Java program remains the definitive fix when its own files are missing.
Fix 8: Update related software, not random drivers
This is not normally a Device Manager problem. javaaccessbridge.dll is an application component, so updating a display, chipset, or audio driver will not normally restore it.
Use Device Manager only if the Java program fails alongside wider graphics or hardware problems:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
Do not expect this step to fix a missing Java bridge by itself. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware entries and checking which drivers are stale; its free scan identifies driver issues, while installation is handled by the full version.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid websites offering a standalone javaaccessbridge.dll download. A replacement may be:
- The wrong architecture.
- From an unrelated Java release.
- Modified or malicious.
- Missing companion bridge libraries and Java archives.
- Placed in a directory the application never uses.
- Incompatible with the launcher’s Java runtime.
Do not copy a 64-bit suffixed file and rename it. Do not place a random copy in System32 or the application directory merely because Windows reports a missing file.
Use the application vendor’s installer, the Java distribution required by that application, or Oracle’s official legacy Java Access Bridge package when an old program specifically requires it.

Prevention after the repair
- Keep the affected application and its bundled runtime together.
- Do not delete old Java folders until you know which applications use them.
- Record whether each installed Java runtime is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Let the application installer manage its bridge files.
- Check antivirus quarantine after major Java or application updates.
- Avoid copying installed Java applications between computers.
- Keep a note of the launcher path and Java runtime path that worked.
FAQ
Is javaaccessbridge.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a Java Access Bridge component associated with Java accessibility support. It is not a standard Windows file that should be restored from System32.
Does every Java program need Java Access Bridge?
No. It is used when Java accessibility support is enabled or required by the application. A program may incorrectly reference it, or its launcher may have retained an obsolete accessibility setting.
Should I install 32-bit Java on 64-bit Windows?
Only when the application requires it. Older software that expects the unsuffixed JavaAccessBridge.dll is often tied to a 32-bit or legacy layout. Match Java to the application, not merely to the Windows edition.
Will reinstalling the newest Java fix the error?
Not necessarily. The application may bundle its own Java runtime, require a particular architecture, or depend on the legacy bridge package. Repair the application first when only one program fails.
Why does the error say “could not load” instead of “missing”?
The file may exist but fail because of a missing dependency, wrong architecture, damaged installation, or an incorrect Java path. “Bad Image,” 0xc000007b, and “Can’t find dependent libraries” commonly point beyond simple absence.
Can I use System File Checker to restore it?
No. SFC checks protected Windows files. It does not normally restore third-party Java files. Use it only as a later Windows-integrity check.
What should I collect if the error continues?
Record the complete error text, affected executable path, Java version, Java architecture, location of any JavaAccessBridge files, antivirus actions, and whether the application uses a private runtime folder. Those details identify the correct repair path.
