Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →mciavi32.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component. It is the Video For Windows MCI driver, a legacy multimedia component used to play AVI and other video streams through Windows Media Control Interface commands.
If Windows reports that mciavi32.dll is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, do not download a replacement DLL first. Repair Windows from its own component store, then repair the affected application if the problem is limited to one program.
What mciavi32.dll does
mciavi32.dll belongs to the older MCIAVI multimedia subsystem. Legacy programs use MCI commands to open, play, pause, seek, and close AVI video streams. Older games, media utilities, setup programs, and business software may still depend on this interface even though modern Windows applications usually use newer media frameworks.
Microsoft classifies MCI as legacy technology and identifies MediaPlayer as its successor. That does not make mciavi32.dll suspicious. A copy supplied by Windows can be a genuine Microsoft system file.

The file is part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System, not normally part of:
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX End-User Runtime
- .NET
- A graphics card driver package
- A sound card driver package
- A random game DLL bundle
Microsoft’s documentation describes the component as the MCIAVI Video for Windows driver.
Check the exact error first
The wording helps separate a damaged Windows component from an application-specific problem. You may see:
- “The program can’t start because mciavi32.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “mciavi32.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mciavi32.dll was not found.”
- “mciavi32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “MCI error: Specified device not open or not recognized by MCI.”
The last message can occur even when the DLL exists. It may indicate a damaged legacy MCI mapping, an incompatible application, or a problem with the program’s own files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAlso note whether:
- Several programs fail, or only one.
- The problem started after an update, crash, malware cleanup, or antivirus action.
- The affected program is an old 32-bit application.
- Windows Security recently quarantined a file.
- The application’s own installation directory contains a copy of
mciavi32.dll.
That information determines which repair is appropriate.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates
Start with Windows Update because protected Windows files are serviced through Windows.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Open the affected application again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
If the error began immediately after an update, do not repeatedly reinstall the DLL. Continue to the Windows repair steps below. If necessary, Windows Recovery can uninstall a recent update or restore the system to an earlier restore point.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted copy of mciavi32.dll.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source, and SFC uses that source to replace damaged protected files. The official command guidance is in Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM instructions.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when DISM completes.
Run SFC
After restarting:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the program that reported the error.
Interpret the result
SFC may report one of these general outcomes:
- No integrity violations: Windows did not find protected-file corruption. Repair the affected application next.
- Corrupt files were found and repaired: Restart and test the application.
- Corrupt files were found but some could not be repaired: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time. If it still cannot repair the files, use the recovery options later in this guide.
Repeatedly running SFC without addressing a damaged component store usually does not add value. If you want a guided scan that identifies repair issues instead of manually comparing command output and component versions, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it finds; its repair actions require the full version, and it is optional rather than a replacement for Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands.
If DISM cannot find repair files
When Windows Update cannot provide the required source, DISM may report that source files could not be found. Microsoft documents using a genuine Windows installation source that matches the installed edition and architecture.

For example:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to a matching Windows repair source. Do not use a random folder copied from another computer. The source must match the Windows installation closely enough for servicing to trust it.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 5–30 minutes
If only one old application or game reports the error while Windows itself passes DISM and SFC, the application is the more likely problem.
A program can report mciavi32.dll when its own files, codecs, configuration, installer, or expected MCI settings are damaged.
Use Windows app repair
For supported applications:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Open Advanced options if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Not every traditional desktop program provides a Windows Repair button.
Reinstall from the official publisher
If repair is unavailable:
- Back up the application’s saved data if needed.
- Uninstall the application from Windows Settings or Control Panel.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s official publisher or use the original trusted installation media.
- Install the program again.
- Restart if requested.
- Test the AVI or video function.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking command before reinstalling the entire game.
If the application is very old, check whether it is a 32-bit program and whether its publisher documents compatibility settings. Compatibility settings may help an old application run, but they do not replace a damaged Windows component.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
Malware cleanup or an antivirus quarantine can remove a file that an old program expects. It can also leave a damaged installation behind.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
mciavi32.dll.
Do not automatically restore the file. First confirm:
- The detected file came from a normal Windows directory.
- Its properties identify Microsoft Corporation.
- Its digital signature is valid.
- A current scan does not identify it as a threat.
- The detection is demonstrably a false positive.
If the file was in a temporary folder, a user-writable directory, or an unexpected application folder, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. A file with the correct name outside the Windows component locations is not automatically malware, but it deserves investigation.
Microsoft explains quarantine and restore behavior in its Protection History guidance. Restoring a genuine threat can expose the system, so repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead of forcing an unverified file back into service.
Fix 5: Check the correct 32-bit and 64-bit Windows locations
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
On 64-bit Windows, system components can appear in different directories:
Rank #3
- Analog to digital converter: Digitize VHS, VCR, Hi8, mini DV, camcorder or other analogue video source for your MAC or PC. Preserve your good old memories for ever.

- Video resolution: 1920*1080 (MJPEG) or 720*576 (YUV); easy to convert your old home videos and also modern videos. (capture resolution depends on your video source.)
- Comes with USB Video Capture Device*1, RCA cable*1, blank CD*2, User Manual*1.
%windir%System32contains native 64-bit system components.%windir%SysWOW64contains 32-bit components used by 32-bit applications.
The names are counterintuitive. SysWOW64 does not mean “64-bit system files.” It is the redirected location for many 32-bit components on 64-bit Windows.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A 32-bit legacy application normally reaches the 32-bit Windows component through WOW64 redirection. Do not copy a file from System32 into SysWOW64, or from SysWOW64 into System32, simply because an error message mentions a missing DLL.
Microsoft documents this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
Inspect a file without replacing it
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%windir%System32. - Press Enter.
- Search for
mciavi32.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.
Repeat with %windir%SysWOW64 on 64-bit Windows.
The exact version and file size can vary by Windows release, servicing level, and architecture. Do not use a historical size or version as a universal test.
A file’s presence also does not prove that Windows can load it. A dependency may be damaged, the process may have an architecture mismatch, or the application may be failing elsewhere. DISM, SFC, file properties, and application-specific repair are more reliable than filename searches.
Fix 6: Consider related driver updates only when the evidence points there
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Despite being described as a legacy multimedia driver, mciavi32.dll is not normally repaired by reinstalling a graphics, audio, chipset, or printer driver. Do not begin by replacing hardware drivers unless the failure also involves video output, audio playback, capture hardware, or another device.
If the affected program depends on a separate capture or playback device, update that device from the computer manufacturer or hardware manufacturer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Driver tab and the device status.
- Use Update Driver, or install the current package from the manufacturer’s official support page.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not uninstall an unknown device merely to address mciavi32.dll. Removing the wrong driver can create a second problem.
When several hardware drivers need checking and you want to avoid hunting through manufacturer pages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its driver installation requires the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing the Windows component itself.

Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
Time needed: 5 minutes if no registry repair is required
Do not start with:
regsvr32 mciavi32.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. A runtime or MCI driver may not be a self-registering DLL.
If you run the command and receive an error such as:

that does not prove that mciavi32.dll is missing. It usually means the file is not the type of DLL that regsvr32 registers. Microsoft documents the command’s registration behavior in its regsvr32 reference.
Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET also is not the normal repair for this Windows component. Those packages should only be installed when the application independently requires them.
Advanced case: a damaged MCI mapping
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
If the program reports:
MCI error: Specified device not open or not recognized by MCI.
even though Windows contains the file and SFC reports no corruption, an old MCI configuration may be damaged.

Historical Windows configurations map the AVIVideo MCI device to mciavi32.dll under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionMCI32
This is an advanced, version-sensitive diagnosis, not a universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 fix. Do not create registry values from a generic Internet recipe.
Before inspecting the key:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
regedit. - Press Enter.
- Approve User Account Control.
- Select the relevant key.
- Select File > Export.
- Save a backup of the selected key.
- Check whether the historical
AVIVideomapping exists and points to the correct Windows component for that installation. - Close Registry Editor and restart Windows.
If you are not certain that the mapping applies to your Windows release, stop at this point and repair or reinstall the application instead. An incorrect registry edit can prevent the legacy program from finding its media driver and can complicate later troubleshooting.

In-place Windows repair
Use matching Windows installation media and choose the option to keep personal files and applications. This is more disruptive than DISM and SFC but can repair broad Windows corruption without wiping the installation.
Microsoft describes these choices in its Windows recovery options and installation-media repair guidance.
Use Reset this PC only after backing up important data and considering the less disruptive options.
Common causes and the matching fix

| A separate capture or playback device has a driver problem | Update the specific hardware driver from its manufacturer |
Safe-source rules for mciavi32.dll
Avoid DLL download websites and unofficial “missing DLL fixers.” A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, have the wrong architecture, or fail because the actual problem is a missing dependency, damaged component store, or broken application.
Do not copy mciavi32.dll from another computer. Windows build, architecture, servicing state, ownership, and digital signature may differ. Manual copying can also hide the underlying corruption.
The safe sources are:
- Windows Update
- DISM and the Windows component store
- Matching official Windows installation media
- The official publisher of the application that fails
- The official hardware manufacturer, when a separate device driver is genuinely involved
FAQ
Is mciavi32.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. A Microsoft-supplied copy in the Windows system directories can be legitimate. Verify its location, file properties, digital signature, and antivirus history rather than trusting the filename alone.
Is mciavi32.dll part of DirectX or Visual C++?
No. It is a legacy Microsoft Windows MCI component. Installing DirectX or Visual C++ is not the normal way to restore it.
Should I copy the file into both System32 and SysWOW64?
No. Those directories serve different architectures on 64-bit Windows. Let Windows servicing restore the correct component instead of copying files between them.
Should I register mciavi32.dll with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for self-registering DLLs and is not a general Windows DLL repair command.
Why does the file exist but the program still fail?
The application may be using the wrong architecture, a dependency may be damaged, its own files may be incomplete, or the legacy MCI mapping may be unavailable. Repair Windows first, then repair the application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does every mciavi32.dll error mean Windows is corrupted?
No. A damaged old application, antivirus quarantine, incompatible 32-bit software, legacy MCI configuration, and separate device problems can all produce related symptoms.
What should I do if SFC says everything is fine?
If only one program fails, repair or reinstall that program. If multiple programs fail, examine Windows Security history, test after a restart, and consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair if the problem remains.
Is the file’s exact size a useful test?
Not by itself. Version and size vary by Windows release, architecture, and servicing level. Signature, location, component repair results, and the behavior of the affected program are more useful.
