JavaScript Doom is not one official id Software game. It is a broad name for browser-based versions of Doom built with JavaScript, WebAssembly, browser DOS emulation, or a combination of those technologies. Modern ports usually run a compiled Doom engine in WebAssembly, while JavaScript handles the page, input, file loading, and browser APIs.
Yes, Doom can still run in a web browser—but the exact experience depends on the project. Some ports support modern resolutions, controllers, mods, and multiple IWADs; others are minimal demonstrations or DOS emulators. You may also need to provide legally obtained game data separately.

What “JavaScript Doom” means
The phrase can describe several different things:
| Approach | What runs in the browser | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| JavaScript port | Doom engine logic translated or compiled into JavaScript | Historically important and compatible with older browser technology | Generally less efficient than WebAssembly |
| WebAssembly port | A compiled engine in a .wasm module, integrated with JavaScript |
Fast, compact, and close to native engine behavior | Still requires compatible game data and browser support |
| JS-DOS or DOSBox emulation | A DOS emulator implemented with JavaScript and/or WebAssembly | Runs the original DOS executable with less engine-porting work | Adds emulation overhead and does not solve game-data licensing |
| WebGL/WebAssembly port | WebAssembly engine with browser GPU rendering | Better support for modern displays and resolutions | More complicated to build and deploy |
| JavaScript recreation | A new engine written in JavaScript | Useful for education and experimentation | May not be the original Doom engine or a complete game |
So calling a browser port “JavaScript Doom” is understandable, but technically incomplete. JavaScript and WebAssembly are separate technologies: JavaScript is often the host and integration layer, while WebAssembly executes the compiled game engine.
How Doom reached the browser
id Software released the Doom engine source code in 1997. The repository is licensed under GPL-2.0, but the source release does not include the commercial game’s complete data files. The project’s README explains that real Doom data is still required. See the Doom source repository, its README, and the license.

In June 2011, Mozilla published “Doom on the Web”, a demonstration of compiling the open-source Doom code for browser execution with Emscripten. It was an important milestone because it showed that a substantial 1990s C game could run inside a browser without a traditional plug-in.
Today, Emscripten is an LLVM-based toolchain that compiles C and C++ to WebAssembly using LLVM and Binaryen. It can also generate JavaScript support code. A typical browser Doom stack looks like this:
Doom C/C++ source
↓
Emscripten / LLVM
↓
WebAssembly module + JavaScript glue
↓
Browser APIs
↓
Canvas or WebGL + keyboard, mouse, gamepad, and audio
The port still needs adaptations. Emscripten does not automatically make every native game browser-ready: developers must connect filesystem access, input, audio, graphics, timing, save data, and sometimes networking to browser-compatible interfaces.
What you need to play Doom in a browser
- A current browser with JavaScript enabled.
- WebAssembly support for WASM-based ports.
- A keyboard, and possibly a supported gamepad.
- A compatible IWAD, such as a Doom or Doom II data file, Freedoom, or a shareware data file supported by the selected project.
- A local HTTP server if the build uses several files or the browser blocks loading resources from
file://.
The IWAD is the principal game-data archive. It contains maps, textures, sprites, sounds, and other resources. An IWAD is different from the engine executable.
A PWAD is an add-on archive that patches or replaces content from an IWAD. DEH files contain DeHackEd modifications, while BEX is an extension associated with Boom-compatible engines. Support varies by port, and the order of multiple PWAD files can affect the result.
Browser Doom projects and their differences
| Project or ecosystem | Approach | Documented capabilities | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dwasm | Browser source port based on PrBoom+ and PrBoomX | IWAD, PWAD, DEH, and BEX handling; widescreen ratios; higher resolutions; controller support; browser saves | A feature-rich browser source-port experience |
doom-wasm |
Chocolate Doom WebAssembly port | Project documentation identifies WebSockets support | Networking and multiplayer experiments |
doom.wasm |
Single WebAssembly module | Compact browser example; README says custom WAD loading is not supported | Minimal demos and embedding |
wasm-doom |
TypeScript renderer module for Doom WebAssembly | Browser-oriented rendering component | Developers building their own integration |
| JS-DOS projects | JavaScript/WebAssembly-based DOS emulation | Runs DOS software through an emulated environment; capabilities vary by project | Preserving and experimenting with the original DOS executable |
These projects should not be treated as interchangeable. A page that displays a Doom-like scene may not include the full campaign, save support, sound, custom WAD loading, controller input, or multiplayer.

Source port versus DOS emulator
Source port
A source port adapts the Doom engine to a new platform. It can add widescreen support, modern resolutions, improved audio, flexible controls, compatibility with more content, and sometimes networking. Dwasm is an example of this approach.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Emulator
An emulator recreates enough of the original DOS environment for the original executable to run. JS-DOS-related projects take this route. It can be attractive when preserving the original executable matters more than adding source-port features.
In practical terms, choose a source port for modern browser integration and engine features. Choose emulation when DOS fidelity and executable compatibility are the priority. Both approaches still require attention to the legal status of the files being run or distributed.
Legal game data: the important distinction
The GPL license for the released engine source does not make every Doom asset freely redistributable. Commercial IWAD files are separate copyrighted game data. Do not assume that a GPL engine lets you upload a commercial WAD to a public website.
- Use Freedoom when you need a freely distributable game-data set, subject to its own license terms.
- Use commercial IWADs from a legally obtained copy of the relevant game.
- Do not embed or publicly distribute commercial WAD files without permission.
- Check the selected project’s documentation before using a shareware archive in a public demo; “shareware” does not automatically mean unrestricted redistribution.
- Prefer reputable source repositories and transparent asset instructions over unexplained downloads.
The engine, the browser wrapper, and the game data can all have different licensing terms. They must be evaluated separately.

cd build
emcmake cmake .. -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release -DGL4ES_PATH=/tmp/gl4es
make
The documented output is:
index.html
index.js
index.data
index.wasm
Dwasm also documents a -DSINGLE_HTML_FILE=1 option for producing a portable single-file HTML build. That simplifies distribution but increases the file size.
When several output files are present, serve them over HTTP rather than opening the HTML file directly. A local server avoids common browser restrictions around fetching WebAssembly, data files, and other assets. The exact server command and IWAD filename are project-specific, so follow the selected repository’s instructions rather than copying assumptions from another port.
Dwasm-specific browser features
Dwasm documents support for several features that are not universal to browser Doom:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- WAD compatibility: documented support includes multiple IWADs, PWADs, DEH files, and BEX files.
- Controllers: physical gamepads and joysticks can be used where the browser exposes the relevant functionality. The documentation says a controller button activates the controller, and bindings can be redefined within the limits of the original Doom input model.
- Browser saves: the project attempts to save progress and settings in browser storage. Save points are associated with the sequence of WAD files, and some settings require a reload.
- URL arguments: Dwasm documents passing command-line-style arguments through the query string. Its example represents
-s 5 -f -warp 1 2as?-s&5&-f&-warp&1&2, starting the hardest skill level, enabling fast monsters according to the project description, and warping to episode 1, map 2.
That query-string format is Dwasm-specific. It is not a universal browser-Doom command syntax.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Multiplayer is implementation-specific
There is no single answer to “does browser Doom have multiplayer?” Dwasm’s documentation says WebSockets multiplayer support has not been added. Cloudflare’s doom-wasm project specifically identifies WebSockets support. A multiplayer build may also require a server or other backend.
Before choosing a port, verify the project’s networking documentation. A local single-player WebAssembly build and a networked browser game are substantially different projects.

Common problems and fixes
The page loads, but the game does not start
- Confirm that the required IWAD exists and has the filename and path expected by the project.
- Serve the build through a local HTTP server instead of opening
index.htmlwithfile://. - Remove optional PWAD, DEH, and BEX files and test the base IWAD first.
- Check the browser console for failed fetches, MIME-type errors, or WebAssembly loading errors.
WebAssembly is unavailable
Possible causes include an old browser, a disabled feature, an extension, or an enterprise or school policy. Try a current mainstream browser and test the selected project in a normal, non-embedded page. If the project offers a JavaScript or JS-DOS alternative, that may work in a more restricted environment, although it can have different performance and compatibility characteristics.
Recommended Free Tools
The controls do not respond
- Click or tap the game canvas to give it focus.
- Check whether pointer lock is required.
- Test without browser shortcuts or extensions intercepting keys.
- For a Dwasm-style controller setup, press a controller button after the game begins.
Audio is missing or unreliable
Browsers commonly require a user interaction before starting an audio context. Click the game before diagnosing the port. Audio behavior also depends on whether the build uses Web Audio, synthesized MIDI, OPL2-style emulation, or another implementation. Dwasm documents options involving Timidity and OPL2-like audio, but behavior should be checked in the specific build.
The game runs slowly
Possible causes include a JavaScript-only implementation, DOS emulation, software rendering, a resource-constrained mobile browser, a large mod, or a debug build. WebAssembly is usually the more appropriate technical choice when performance matters, but actual speed depends on the port, browser, device, rendering path, and WAD. There is no meaningful universal FPS figure for “JavaScript Doom.”
A mod does not work
Check whether the port supports custom WADs at all, whether the mod requires a particular engine, whether DEH/BEX support is available, and whether the PWAD order is correct. Dwasm documents PWAD, DEH, and BEX support; doom.wasm documents that custom WAD loading is not supported.
Saves disappear
Browser storage can be affected by private browsing, cleared site data, a changed URL, a changed WAD sequence, storage quotas, or embedded-frame restrictions. Treat browser saves as a convenience rather than your only backup.

Which approach should you choose?
- Choose a modern WebAssembly source port for widescreen display, higher resolutions, controllers, and mod support.
- Choose JS-DOS or DOSBox emulation when running the original DOS executable is the main goal.
- Choose a single-module WASM demo when you need a small, simple technical example and do not need custom WAD loading.
- Choose a networking-oriented project only when its documentation explicitly describes WebSockets or another multiplayer layer and you understand the required backend.
Final verdict
JavaScript Doom is real as a category, not as one canonical official product. The term originally evokes the 2011 Emscripten demonstration that compiled Doom’s C code for the web. Modern browser versions are more accurately described as WebAssembly Doom ports, JavaScript-integrated source ports, or browser DOS emulators.
The best choice depends on the outcome you want: Dwasm is the strongest documented example for a feature-rich browser source port; a JS-DOS project is better suited to DOS emulation; doom.wasm is aimed at a minimal embedded demonstration; and Cloudflare’s project is relevant when WebSockets matter. In every case, verify the project’s current documentation, provide compatible game data, and keep the engine license separate from the copyright status of commercial Doom assets.
