jawt.dll errors usually mean the application cannot find, load, or use the Java runtime that owns the file. Repair or reinstall that exact Java installation, or repair the application if it includes a private Java runtime.

What this file actually does

jawt.dll is the Windows implementation of Java AWT Native Interface, or JAWT. It allows native C and C++ libraries to draw into Java AWT windows and surfaces. Java desktop software, embedded viewers, IDEs, launchers, JavaBeans, and applications with native graphics components may depend on it.

This is not a Windows system DLL. It does not belong to DirectX, .NET, a Windows driver, or the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable. It normally belongs in the Java installation used by the failing program, commonly inside a bin folder. Older Java 8 installations may use a path containing jrebin, while modern JDK installations use a path similar to jdk-<feature>bin.

The exact location depends on the Java vendor, release, architecture, and application. Oracle, OpenJDK, Temurin, Corretto, Azul Zulu, and other distributions can provide different Java installations. Some applications also ship their own private runtime, so installing system-wide Java may not affect the program at all.

Do not assume that an existing jawt.dll is the correct one. The program may be launching another Java executable, using the wrong architecture, or failing because a dependency of jawt.dll is missing.

Causes by symptom

Error or symptom Most likely meaning Best next step
“jawt.dll was not found” The application cannot locate the owning Java runtime or its bin directory Find the Java runtime used by the application and repair it
“The program can’t start because jawt.dll is missing” The runtime is missing, incomplete, quarantined, or damaged Repair or reinstall Java or the application
“Error loading jawt.dll. The specified module could not be found” jawt.dll may exist, but one of its dependencies may not Check the application log and repair the owning runtime
“jawt.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” The file may be corrupt or the architecture may be wrong Confirm 32-bit versus 64-bit and reinstall the matching runtime
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError Java could not load a native library Check java.home, java.library.path, dependencies, and architecture
“Native Library …jawt.dll already loaded in another classloader” This is a duplicate native-library load, not a missing-file problem Remove duplicate copies or JARs and restart the Java process
The error began after an app update The update may have removed or changed its bundled runtime Repair or reinstall the application
The error appeared after antivirus activity The file may have been quarantined Review Windows Security Protection history

Fix jawt.dll errors in order

1. Identify the application and its Java runtime

Start with the program named in the error. A Java server, game launcher, desktop utility, IDE, and browser-plugin-era application may each use a different runtime.

Look in the application’s installation folder for directories named:

  • jre
  • runtime
  • jdk
  • java
  • jrebin
  • runtimebin

If you find one, check whether it contains binjawt.dll. Do not replace the file yet. First determine whether this is the runtime the application actually launches.

Open Command Prompt and run:

where java
java -version
java -XshowSettings:properties -version 2>&1 | findstr /i "java.home os.arch sun.arch.data.model"

where java shows which java.exe Windows finds through PATH. The settings command reports the Java home and architecture information. If the application uses a bundled runtime, these commands may show a different Java installation from the one used by the program.

Check the launcher shortcut as well. Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect Target and Start in. A launcher may point directly to a private java.exe, a script, or a custom runtime.

If the application runs as a Windows service, do not rely only on your interactive Command Prompt. Services can have a different PATH, JAVA_HOME, working directory, and account environment.

2. Confirm the 32-bit or 64-bit match

A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit Java runtime. A 64-bit application needs a compatible 64-bit runtime. A 32-bit program can still require 32-bit Java on 64-bit Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for the program architecture in its documentation, installer, or executable properties. Then compare it with the Java information from:

java -XshowSettings:properties -version 2>&1 | findstr /i "os.arch sun.arch.data.model"

Do not install the newest Java package blindly. An older application may require a particular Java feature release, vendor distribution, or 32-bit package. Use the Java vendor’s official download page and select the package required by the application. Oracle provides separate Windows packages, including Windows x64 JDK packages and Java 8 Windows packages for different architectures.

If the application bundles Java, reinstall the application’s own runtime instead of forcing a separate system Java installation.

3. Repair the application first when it includes Java

If the program has its own jre, runtime, or jdk folder, the application installer is usually the correct repair source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a modern Windows app:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select its three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the application again.

For a traditional desktop installer:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select the affected program.
  4. Choose Change or Repair if available.
  5. Complete the installer.
  6. Restart the application.

If repair is unavailable or does not restore jawt.dll, uninstall and reinstall the application from the developer’s official installer. Back up application settings or saved data first if the program stores them in its installation directory.

Some launchers provide Verify files, Scan and repair, or Repair runtime options. Use those before installing unrelated Java packages. A system Java installation will not repair a private runtime stored inside the application folder.

4. Repair or reinstall the matching Java installation

If the program uses system Java and jawt.dll is absent from its owning bin directory, repair or reinstall that Java distribution.

First close the affected program and any Java processes. Then:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for Java, JDK, OpenJDK, Temurin, Corretto, Zulu, or the relevant vendor name.
  3. Select the installation’s three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Uninstall if no repair option exists.
  5. Restart Windows if prompted.
  6. Download the matching architecture and release from the Java vendor’s official website.
  7. Install it using the normal installer.
  8. Launch the affected application again.

If the application requires Java 8, install the required Java 8 package rather than assuming a modern JDK will work. If the application documentation names a vendor, use that vendor’s build.

After installation, check the expected bin directory. You can inspect a suspected file with PowerShell:

Get-Item "C:PathTojawt.dll" |
  Select-Object FullName, Length, LastWriteTime,
    @{Name="FileVersion";Expression={$_.VersionInfo.FileVersion}},
    @{Name="ProductVersion";Expression={$_.VersionInfo.ProductVersion}},
    @{Name="Description";Expression={$_.VersionInfo.FileDescription}}

The command confirms the file’s location and Windows metadata. There is no universal jawt.dll version, size, or checksum that applies to every Java vendor and release.

The fix worked when the application starts using the intended Java runtime without a new native-library error. If the same message remains, continue with the path and dependency checks rather than copying a different DLL over it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Correct PATH, JAVA_HOME, or the application launcher

A valid jawt.dll can still fail when the launcher uses another Java installation or cannot search the owning bin directory. Windows does not search every Java installation automatically.

For an application that explicitly requires Java on PATH:

  1. Open Start and search for environment variables.
  2. Choose Edit the system environment variables.
  3. Select Environment Variables.
  4. Under User variables or System variables, inspect JAVA_HOME.
  5. Set JAVA_HOME to the matching Java installation folder, not to its bin folder.
  6. Edit Path.
  7. Add the matching Java bin folder, such as the bin directory belonging to that installation.
  8. Move the intended Java entry above conflicting Java entries if necessary.
  9. Select OK on every dialog.
  10. Close and reopen Command Prompt, the launcher, or the service.

Verify the result:

where java
java -version
echo %JAVA_HOME%

For Java applications that use native libraries, the Java java.library.path setting may also matter. A launcher or service can override it independently of Windows PATH.

Do not change the environment globally if the application requires a private runtime. In that case, correct the application’s launcher configuration or reinstall its bundled files.

6. Investigate a missing dependency

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean jawt.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found jawt.dll but failed to load a dependency required by it.

Check the application log, launcher log, Java exception, or Windows event details for the name of another missing DLL. If another file is named, repair the Java runtime or application that owns the dependency. Do not download that second file in isolation.

This distinction is especially important when the error says “Error loading jawt.dll” rather than simply “jawt.dll was not found.” A trusted dependency-analysis tool can help a developer or administrator identify the missing module, but the normal end-user repair remains reinstalling the exact Java runtime or application.

7. Check antivirus quarantine

A security product may quarantine a Java runtime file after an update or false detection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review entries from the time the application stopped working.
  5. Expand an entry and inspect the detected file path.
  6. Restore or allow the file only if it came from the verified official Java or application installer.
  7. Run a security scan afterward.
  8. Repair or reinstall the runtime if the file is not restored cleanly.

Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can expose the device. If the file came from an unofficial archive or an unknown DLL source, remove it and reinstall the application from its official installer instead.

8. Handle duplicate native-library loading separately

An exception containing already loaded in another classloader is not fixed by restoring a missing file. Java prevents the same native library from being loaded into multiple class loaders in the same process.

For this case:

  1. Close the application and all related Java processes.
  2. Remove duplicate Java runtime folders from the launcher configuration.
  3. Check for duplicate copies of the application’s native JARs or libraries.
  4. Remove duplicate library paths from the application settings.
  5. Update or reinstall the application if its packaging created the duplicates.
  6. Restart Windows if a Java process remains locked.

If you maintain the application, ensure that one native library is loaded by the intended class loader and that separate copies are not being resolved through conflicting paths.

9. Use Windows repair tools only for wider component corruption

Because jawt.dll normally comes from Java rather than Windows, SFC and DISM are lower-probability fixes. Use them when other Windows programs also show unexplained startup failures or Windows components are clearly damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow

Run DISM first and wait for it to finish. Then run SFC. Restart Windows afterward and test the application.

SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not normally restore a Java-owned jawt.dll, so an unchanged error points back to the Java runtime, application package, architecture, or dependency.

Repeatedly hunting through repair commands without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies, while repairs are performed by the full version; reinstalling the affected Java application remains the definitive fix when its private runtime is damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Update drivers only when the error names a driver dependency

Graphics drivers are not a normal repair for jawt.dll. Update them only if the application separately reports a graphics DLL, OpenGL component, display-driver failure, or rendering crash after Java has been repaired.

To check manually:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the graphics device.
  5. Choose Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

For a clean vendor repair, download the driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its scan identifies as outdated, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is not required to repair Java itself.

11. Try System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is a fallback if the failure began immediately after a Java update, application update, driver installation, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Choose Next.
  5. Select a restore point from before the failure.
  6. Choose Scan for affected programs.
  7. Review the changes.
  8. Select Finish if the restore point is appropriate.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed programs, drivers, and updates. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the official application or Java installer.

What not to do

Do not download an isolated jawt.dll from a random DLL download website. The file may contain malware, belong to a different Java build, have the wrong architecture, or hide the real problem in the launcher or application installation.

Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an arbitrary application folder. Windows may load the copied file before the intended runtime copy, creating version conflicts and DLL-preloading risk.

Do not run:

regsvr32 jawt.dll

regsvr32 is for self-registering COM and OLE DLLs that expose registration entry points. JAWT is a Java native-interface library loaded by the JVM, not a COM server. Registration will generally produce an entry-point error or accomplish nothing.

A manual copy is appropriate only for a developer or vendor packaging a private runtime, using the file from the exact same official Java build, architecture, and release. It is not the normal end-user repair.

FAQ

Is jawt.dll part of Windows?

No. It is the Windows Java AWT Native Interface library and normally ships with the Java runtime used by an application.

Does every Java application need jawt.dll?

No. It is mainly relevant when a Java program or native component uses AWT and native rendering integration.

Should I install the latest Java version?

Not automatically. The application may require Java 8, a particular feature release, a specific vendor build, or a private bundled runtime.

Why does jawt.dll exist, but the program still fails?

The program may use another Java installation, the file may have an incompatible architecture, or a dependency of jawt.dll may be missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?

Not normally. Install or repair those components only when the error separately names a file belonging to them.

What information should I provide to support?

Provide the complete error text, application and version, Java vendor and version, java.home, 32-bit or 64-bit status, paths to java.exe and jawt.dll, whether the application bundles Java, and any antivirus quarantine details.
