- One older application or game fails: Install or repair the official Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable, then repair the application.
- A 32-bit program fails on 64-bit Windows: Install the x86 package. The x64 package alone is not enough.
- The error began after antivirus activity: Check Windows Security Protection history before reinstalling anything.
- The message changes to
msvcp120.dll,msvcr120.dll, ormfc120.dll: Repair the same Visual C++ 2013 installation. These are related runtime components. - The DLL exists but the application still will not launch: Check the application architecture, installation files, and dependent DLLs.
- Several unrelated programs report missing DLLs: Suspect broader Windows, disk, or security problems and proceed to the DISM and SFC section.
Do not begin by downloading mfcm120.dll from a random DLL website. The supported repair is the runtime package or the original application installer.
What mfcm120.dll is
mfcm120.dll is part of the MFC Managed Library used by applications built with Microsoft Foundation Classes and Windows Forms controls. Microsoft associates the 120 runtime family with Visual Studio 2013, also called Visual C++ 12.0. Microsoft’s documentation lists mfcm[version].dll as the MFC Managed Library and identifies the Unicode counterpart as mfcm[version]u.dll in its DLL redistribution guidance.
This is not normally a core Windows file. It is supplied by the Visual C++ 2013 runtime or deployed privately inside an application’s installation folder. The Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 SDK redistribution list also includes MFCmfcm120.dll.
The names are easy to confuse:
mfcm120.dllis the MFC Managed Library component.mfcm120u.dllis its Unicode counterpart.mfc120.dllis a different MFC runtime library.msvcp120.dllis the Visual C++ Standard Library component.msvcr120.dllis the Visual C++ runtime component.
The number 120 does not mean Windows 12 or Windows 10. It identifies the Visual C++ 2013 and Visual Studio 2013 runtime generation.

Fix 1: Install or repair Visual C++ 2013
This is the most likely fix when one application reports mfcm120.dll.
1. Download the official packages
Open Microsoft’s Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable download page.
Download:
vcredist_x86.exefor 32-bit applicationsvcredist_x64.exefor 64-bit applications on 64-bit Windows
A 32-bit application needs the x86 runtime even when Windows itself is 64-bit. On a typical 64-bit PC, installing both packages is normally appropriate because many older applications remain 32-bit.
Do not assume Visual C++ 2015–2022 replaces Visual C++ 2013. These runtime generations are installed side by side, and a newer package does not necessarily satisfy an application linked specifically to VC++ 12.0.
2. Run the installer
- Open your Downloads folder.
- Double-click
vcredist_x86.exe. - Accept the license terms.
- Choose Install or Repair, depending on what the installer offers.
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run
vcredist_x64.exeas well if you are using 64-bit Windows. - Restart Windows.
- Try the affected application again.
Microsoft’s latest available Visual C++ 2013 packages are identified as version 12.0.40664.0 in its supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. The installed file version can vary by architecture and servicing update.
3. Check the result
If the application opens, the runtime dependency was the problem. If the error changes to another VC++ 2013 filename, do not download that file separately. Repair both redistributable packages from Settings → Apps → Installed apps, or reinstall them from Microsoft’s installer.
On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit runtime files are normally found under C:WindowsSystem32, while 32-bit runtime files are normally under C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folder names are confusing but expected. Do not manually copy files between them.
Fix 2: Identify and repair the application
The dialog usually identifies the program that failed. If it does not, use one of these methods:
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the application name in the error window title.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and choose Properties.
- Look at the Target field on the Shortcut tab.
- Open Task Manager, start the application, and watch for its process name.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing
Win + R, typingeventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. - Go to Windows Logs → Application and inspect the error recorded at the launch time.
Once you know the application:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or the official store where you obtained it. This matters because some applications expect a private copy of the runtime or additional MFC files alongside the program.
For Steam, Epic, or another launcher, use its file verification or repair feature before manually replacing anything. A damaged application installation can produce the same error even after Visual C++ 2013 is installed correctly.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus software can quarantine a runtime file or an application component. Do not disable antivirus protection globally to test this.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or
mfcm120.dll. - If the file came from a trusted, signed application or Microsoft installer, review the available restore or allow action.
- Reinstall the application from its official source if you are uncertain about the file.
- Start the application again.
Microsoft explains this workflow in its Protection history documentation. Protection History is time-limited, so check it soon after the failure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If restoring the file makes the error return, leave it quarantined and obtain a clean application installer. Never allow an unverified DLL merely because its filename matches the error.
Fix 4: Repair the application’s dependencies
If mfcm120.dll is present but the message says “The specified module could not be found,” Windows may be unable to load a dependency of that DLL. The missing item is not always the filename shown in the message.

Use this order:
- Repair or reinstall both Visual C++ 2013 redistributables.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application.
- Use the launcher’s file verification feature.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Read the complete error message for another missing module.
If the next message names msvcp120.dll, msvcr120.dll, mfc120.dll, or vccorlib120.dll, that still points to the Visual C++ 2013 family. Repair the redistributable rather than collecting individual DLL files.
A DLL that exists in a Windows folder can still be wrong for the application’s architecture, damaged, incompatible with another component, or dependent on another missing file.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when several programs are failing, Windows itself is behaving abnormally, or you have evidence of broader system corruption. They are not a replacement for installing Visual C++ 2013 when only one application lacks its runtime.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command reliably installs a missing third-party Visual C++ dependency.
When repeated DISM and SFC runs leave you guessing about what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; the repair is performed by the full version, but installing the affected application remains the definitive fix when it owns the missing dependency.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the application identifies a driver problem
Driver reinstallation is not a default fix for mfcm120.dll. Use it when the failing application, Event Viewer, or its vendor specifically points to a graphics, audio, chipset, or other driver component.
For a graphics driver:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the relevant adapter.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
For a clean vendor repair, download the driver from the computer or graphics manufacturer’s official support page, uninstall the existing driver only when the vendor’s instructions require it, and install the replacement.
If manually checking dozens of hardware models is slowing down the repair, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; the driver installation is done by the full version, and it should only be used when a driver is actually implicated.
Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 mfcm120.dll
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a registration entry point. Ordinary Visual C++ runtime libraries are not repaired that way. You may receive:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
That message does not prove the DLL is defective. It means the registration command does not apply to that library. Microsoft describes the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Why loose DLL downloads are unsafe
A standalone DLL from an unknown download page may be:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- From the wrong Visual C++ servicing level
- Unsigned or modified
- Missing its own dependencies
- Intended for a different application
- A source of malware
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create another loader error and make later repairs harder. Use Microsoft’s Visual C++ 2013 redistributable or the application’s official installer instead.
Manual application-local deployment can be legitimate for developers and vendors using a verified, licensed complete runtime deployment. It is not the recommended end-user repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrevention and final checks
After the application launches:
- Keep the application updated through its official source.
- Keep Windows Security active and review unexpected quarantine events.
- Keep the correct x86 and x64 runtimes installed rather than deleting older VC++ generations.
- Use launcher verification after interrupted updates.
- Do not remove runtime packages merely because their names look old.
- If every application begins reporting missing DLLs, run a security scan and investigate disk or Windows corruption.
FAQ
Is mfcm120.dll a Windows system file?
Generally no. It is a Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 MFC runtime component used by applications. It may be installed globally by the redistributable or deployed inside a specific application folder.
Is mfcm120.dll the same as mfc120.dll?
No. They are different MFC libraries. mfcm120u.dll is the Unicode counterpart of mfcm120.dll, while mfc120.dll is another VC++ 2013 MFC runtime component.
Which Visual C++ package installs it?
The Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable. Install x86 for 32-bit software and x64 for 64-bit software. On 64-bit Windows, installing both is normally appropriate.
Will Visual C++ 2015–2022 fix it?
Not necessarily. VC++ runtime generations can coexist, and an application built for VC++ 2013 may specifically require the 2013 redistributable.
