Jax Damage Types Explained: Which Abilities Deal Magic Damage?

Yes—Jax deals magic damage, but he is a mixed-damage champion rather than a purely physical or purely magical one. In League of Legends, Empower (W) and Grandmaster-at-Arms (R) are identified as magic damage, while Leap Strike (Q) and Counter Strike (E) deal physical damage. Jax’s passive attack proc also deals magic damage on every third consecutive attack. Wild Rift has the same important passive distinction, but its ability details should be read separately from League of Legends.

Jax’s damage type at a glance

The short answer is easy to miss in a fight because Jax’s abilities combine physical hits, magic procs and basic attacks. Use the table below as the practical reference for League of Legends. It describes damage type, not whether an ability is an attack reset, leap, stun or defensive effect.

Ability or effect League of Legends damage type How the damage is delivered Evidence and qualification
Passive: every third consecutive attack Magic An additional on-hit proc after Jax builds consecutive attacks on the same target Riot’s official League champion description says the passive adds magic damage on every third consecutive attack.
Leap Strike (Q) Physical An activated leap that damages its target The current ability reference classifies Q as physical damage.
Empower (W) Magic An empowered next attack or ability hit The current ability reference classifies W as magic damage.
Counter Strike (E) Physical Damage released when the counterattack effect ends The current ability reference classifies E as physical damage.
Grandmaster-at-Arms (R) Magic for its damaging component An activated area attack around Jax, alongside its defensive effect The current ability reference classifies R damage as magic. Riot’s champion-page wording confirms the active damages nearby enemies but does not label the type in that text.

That split is why calling Jax “physical” is incomplete. His ordinary attacks are still central to his damage pattern, but the passive proc, W and R add magic damage that opponents cannot answer with armor alone.

Which League of Legends abilities deal magic damage?

Empower (W)

Empower is Jax’s clearest repeatable magic-damage button. Activating W enhances his next damaging attack or ability hit. The resulting damage is classified as magic, even though the animation is attached to a weapon strike and usually occurs inside a sequence of basic attacks.

This distinction matters when reading a combat log or deciding which defense is reducing the hit. The attack animation does not make the damage physical; the ability’s damage category controls which resistance applies. W can therefore add magic damage to a pattern that otherwise looks like a string of physical attacks.

Grandmaster-at-Arms (R)

Jax’s ultimate has two jobs. The official League champion description says he can activate it to damage enemies around himself and strengthen his defenses. The current ability reference identifies the ultimate’s damaging component as magic damage.

Do not treat the ultimate’s defensive effect as damage. Its resistance increase changes how much incoming damage Jax can withstand, while the area hit is the part assigned a damage type. A target that survives the physical portions of Jax’s engage can still take magic damage when the ultimate’s damaging effect is applied.

Why Q and E are not magic damage

Leap Strike (Q) and Counter Strike (E) are classified as physical damage in the current League reference. Q is a targeted leap that can be used to reach an enemy or reposition through an allied unit. E is a defensive counterattack that avoids incoming basic attacks during its active window and then deals its own physical damage when it ends.

The utility attached to an ability does not change its damage type. Q’s mobility and E’s dodge-and-stun pattern may dominate how a trade feels, but the damage portion remains physical. This is also why a Jax trade can contain both resistance checks in only a few seconds.

Jax’s passive is magic damage, not a physical third hit

Riot’s official League champion page describes Jax’s passive as adding magic damage on every third consecutive attack. “Consecutive” is the important condition: the bonus is tied to building attacks in sequence rather than appearing on every hit.

Because the proc is added to a basic attack, players sometimes read the entire strike as physical. In damage terms, the attack can contain a normal attack component plus a separate magic-damage component from the passive. The combat result is therefore mixed even when Jax is only pressing the attack command.

The passive also explains why Jax’s damage profile changes during an extended duel. Short contact may contain mostly ordinary attack damage and an occasional ability hit; sustained contact gives the third-hit proc repeated opportunities. The exact amount and scaling can change with patches, so use the live tooltip for current numbers rather than an old guide.

How Wild Rift differs from League of Legends

Wild Rift is a separate game version with its own balance, tooltips and ability data. Riot’s official Wild Rift Jax page explicitly states: “Every third consecutive attack deals additional Magic Damage.” That confirms the magic-damage passive in Wild Rift without proving that League and Wild Rift use identical values or timing.

The same page also says Jax can activate the ability to increase his Armor and Magic Resist. That is a defensive description; it should not be read as evidence that every damaging part of the Wild Rift ultimate has the same type as the League version.

Do not transfer League numbers, ratios or detailed ability behavior into Wild Rift. The supplied official Wild Rift wording establishes the passive’s magic damage, while the detailed damage classification of every other Wild Rift ability should be checked in the current Wild Rift client. A build, patch or tooltip from one version is not a reliable substitute for the other.

What “mixed damage” means for opponents

Armor alone is not a complete answer

Armor is the relevant defensive stat for Jax’s physical portions: Q, E, ordinary attack damage and the physical part of an attack sequence. Magic resistance addresses the magic portions from the passive proc, W and R in League of Legends. Stacking only one resistance leaves the other half of his profile relatively less protected.

Read the source of the damage, not the animation

A glowing weapon, a leap or a circular visual effect is not a dependable way to identify damage type. Check the ability tooltip or combat log. W is magic despite being attached to a strike; E is physical despite its defensive counterattack presentation; and the third consecutive attack can include a separate magic proc.

Why penetration decisions are matchup-dependent

Jax players and opponents should choose penetration or defensive items according to the resistance that is actually limiting damage in that game. If a target has invested heavily in armor, magic portions from W, R and the passive may retain more value; if the target has high magic resistance, Jax’s physical attacks and Q/E components matter more. The right conclusion depends on the target’s items, level and the current patch, not on a universal claim that Jax is “an AP champion” or “an AD champion.”

How to verify Jax’s current damage type in the client

Patch updates can alter ratios, base values and sometimes wording. When accuracy matters, verify the live tooltip rather than relying on an old video or guide.

  1. Open a private Practice Tool session and select Jax from the champion roster.
  2. Hover or open each ability tooltip, recording the damage type shown for Q, W, E and R. Expand the tooltip if the client offers a detailed view.
  3. Use a training dummy or an enemy champion with no unusual defensive effects. Test Q and E separately, then W and R, so their damage is not merged into one combat-log entry.
  4. Perform consecutive basic attacks and watch for the third-hit passive proc. The combat text or log should separate the added magic component when the client displays damage details.
  5. Repeat the test after a patch if you are maintaining a guide. Do not carry forward old numeric values simply because the ability name and general damage type stayed the same.

This process is especially important for R. Riot’s official League page describes the ultimate’s area damage and defensive activation, while the current community-maintained ability reference supplies the magic classification. The client is the best final check for the live tooltip and numbers.

Common misconceptions about Jax damage

“Jax is physical because he builds attack damage.”

Attack-damage-oriented builds can improve much of Jax’s output, but a build label does not redefine an ability’s damage type. His passive, W and R still contain magic damage in League of Legends.

“Every Jax ability is magic because his passive is magic.”

The passive does not convert Q or E. Leap Strike and Counter Strike remain physical in the current League reference. Jax’s profile is mixed in both directions.

“A third basic attack is entirely magic.”

The third consecutive attack adds a magic component; it does not necessarily turn the whole basic attack into magic damage. Separate the normal attack damage from the passive proc when interpreting a combat log.

“League and Wild Rift tooltips can be combined.”

They cannot be assumed interchangeable. Riot explicitly documents the Wild Rift passive, but version-specific values and ability behavior require version-specific tooltips.

What the historical patch evidence does—and does not—prove

Riot Patch 13.15 is historical corroboration that Empower had a magic-damage value at that time. It is not proof of the current amount, ratio or balance state. A historical patch note can establish what was true in that patch while remaining unsuitable for a present-day stat table.

For a current guide, preserve the durable classification—W and R magic, Q and E physical, third-hit passive magic—then verify numerical values against the live game. This avoids presenting obsolete numbers as current while still answering the damage-type question accurately.

Bottom line for players

In League of Legends, Jax deals both physical and magic damage. Q and E are physical; W and the damaging part of R are magic; and every third consecutive attack adds a magic passive proc. Wild Rift independently confirms a magic-damage third-hit passive, but its other ability details should be checked in the Wild Rift client. Build and defend against Jax as a mixed-damage champion, and use current tooltips whenever exact values matter.
